Just wondering if anyone thinks this is a good deal. The family laptop was stolen last week so I'm looking for a replacement.

Any thoughts or opinions appreciated.

Good for what? What will you be doing with it?
I for one have never been impressed with Gateway's (the OEM for this model is Quanta) build quality. My buddy has a similar model (higher spec'd) that has been in for repairs several times now. Broken hinges, dead optical drives, warped keyboards, and the bezel around the LCD is coming apart.

Well this is a general use PC for the family. Used for downloading music, ripping, MSN, School projects with Word, Browsing the web, FTA stuff.
It's not really used for any type of business stuff or gaming really.
I was also looking at this one from Tiger Direct

They (the family) wants something portable that you can lug around the house. It's out of my hands on why it's not a desktop. They have their hearts settled on a laptop again.

for the everyday normal activities, it will be good enough, it can also run some older games like WC3....
