Hi all.. I picked up the Mio for 100 bucks during Boxing Day week and I lurve it except it really seriously stinks with the US maps. I saved the links from the threads on how to "hack" the Mio but I don't care about the fancy doo-dads, I just want to see the maps.
So - my question - if I copy the US Maps on to an sd card and put that in the Mio, will it see the maps? I am a total technoloser so I can't even begin to consider doing the steps outlined on those websites.. just wondering if this little fix will work.
thanks much!

No. No license for the U.S. maps. You'll have to do it the hard way.

Ok thanks for letting me know. I would love to do it the hard way but I am completely inept. Looks like I will have to get a second gps.

Actually the hard way is not that hard... You don't have to completely hack the GPS... The hardest thing is getting a copy of the US maps and a proper license file for it. ;) The rest is easy.

check the Staples mio 220C $119 thread, there's links for new Canada and US maps and how to make it works.

Thanks, langdong - I saved that thread and the links but was very intimidated about all the jiggery pokery I'd have to do (and also the warning that I could completely break the thing if I did it wrong). However, I am feeling inspired.. I think I'm gonna give it a try. If you see me posting for recs on a new gps, you'll know it didn't work out for me!

The cool thing about the C220 is that you can't really break it with the hacks. You can temporary disable it but not break it. The included software allows you to restore the internal memory to factory defaults.
You just have to get a few things:
1. US Maps of course.
2. a license for the US Maps
3. a 2-GB SD memory card. You can get a 1-GB card that will work but the difference in price is so small... Also, with a 2-GB card, you can place other maps on it as well!
4. USB to mini-USB cable
5. SD card reader
Just follow the links in the original thread and collect the software you need to "interface" with the C220s. Once you have established communications, you can back-up the license file and replace it with the one that supports US Maps. Copy the US Map files onto the SD card in the proper directory and reboot. You should be able to enjoy the glories of having proper maps of the US.
