View Full Version : What are the things that stop wind from getting to your face?

Hi, i use my bicycle in the winter to commute to work everyday but wind is a big piss off and using a motorcycle helmet is kinda big and bulky although it gets the work done.

I am looking for an alternative that wont mess up my hair, I already use ear warmers but that only covers the ears, the rest of my face is exposed to the cold wind air.

So what apparel can be used to cover the face up to the eyes? what is it called and how much?

You're looking for a face mask...or a full balaclava if you want it to cover your entire head

Something like this perhaps? (Though maybe without that filter thing on the front)

ninja mask is laughable, but gets the job done. But if you have a scarf already, you can also use it to cover your face.

Hmm, I kinda like this one, would be great for ice-skating on days like this especially, when it's b*tch cold out and I'm dinking around on the puter when there's nice rink just around the corner I'd rather be at. I'll have to find me one of those. Double bonus is that it doesns't matter if you're having a bad hair day...lol.

Sorry for the bad picture but its the best I can do. They're really warm, I've used them plenty of times when I go skating/snowboarding. They're not expensive at all, I bought mine years back when I use to go RCI for no more then 15 dollars.

yeah, like that thx.

Also I discovered this thing called a "scarf" it apparently has been around for some time. I think that should do the trick as a cheap substitute.

I just realized no one gave me the name of what that thing is called so I cannot search for it in stores....God it must be a pain in the ass being you. I mean really, can you not use a LITTLE bit of brain power and figure things out for yourself? At 9:11PM, you reposted 2 photos of "those things", and if you look at the larger one, there is a big honking clue written on it in orange & white.

I'm going to get you to do some leg-work for yourself for a change, but I'll get you started:
Go to http://www.google.ca and type in the clue provided in that larger image. Then hit Enter. And then scan through the results with your eyes, and you will have your answer.

If you got the time, go check out the store where I bought it from but im not too sure if they still sell it though. Its located south of college and yonge, once you see a store few minutes away where they sell wigs and hats thats your store right there.

You can buy a basic one at CT for $9.99, or the type the girl in the blue jacket is modelling can be had for ~$45 inc shipping (retail price: $37US). The only place I found it online so far in Canada was $75!). Why pay $40 one? Read this user-review:

thanks, I am sorry for being an ass, I will try harder in the future. That's all I ask, thank you for that. The original question was fair game, btw.
It's an interesting topic - I see people on bikes in the winter and I think "I wouldn't want to be you", but I guess with a good face mask, it's nowhere near as bad as it would otherwise bad. By the way, the best deal that I mentioned I'd found on the PSolar.Ex ($40.95US shipped, and they take PayPal) was from this link (http://www.exmask.com/psolarex.html), if you or anyone else was interested in spending that much and getting the benefit of its 'heat exchanger'.

That's 1 down...
the thing is not call a polar ex or whatever, thats the brand. you don't call a bike like a supercycle...no one here has yet to say what they're actually called. so relax with the spaz already you don't want to hurt yourself thereI never said or suggested that these garments are generally known as "polar ex"-es. I intentionally did NOT mention the proper term even though I'd taken the 5 seconds needed to Google it and identify the answer as I chose to make the OP work for the answer -- the point being that's it'd have been quicker to Google it than to type up another post here on RFD that once again proved a lack of initiative and over-reliance on others to do the "hard" work (which was not in actual fact hard at all). But thanks for your 'spaz' tip, I'll keep that in mind. LoL!! I cry for you, really as unfortunately, you're yet another RFD'er afflicted with both a reading comprehension issue and a "I don't know how to think properly" problem. So sad.

Ok, just this one time I'll hold your hand and walk you through ALL the steps so that hopefully one day in the not-too-distant future, you can work things through on your own and surprise us all by actually coming up with a *valid* answer for a change.

Let's look at what I actually wrote (I've highlighted the key parts for you) :.. reposted 2 photos of "those things", and if you look at the larger one, there is a big honking clue written on it in orange & white.

I'm going to get you to do some leg-work for yourself for a change, but I'll get you started:
Go to http://www.google.ca and type in the clue provided in that larger image. Then hit Enter. And then scan through the results with your eyes, and you will have your answer. definition of the word 'clue' = "something that serves to GUIDE or DIRECT in the solution of a problem or mystery" [link] (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/clue)
the CLUE (not answer, you see) that I was referring to = "PSOLAR EX" (emblazoned on the garment in the stated image)
"I'm going to get you to do some leg-work" = I'm not going to flat out tell you('AzN', that is) the answer
".. but I'll get you started" = but I am going to GUIDE you in the right direction of the solution (<-- do those words sound familiar?)
Google search query = "psolar ex" (including the quotation marks, because that's what people like me who don't want to waste time with meaningless results do)
Query results = (screencap of first 6 shown) :
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/584/85058055rp5.jpg
"scan through the results.. and you will have your answer" = look for a word or grouping of words that describe WHAT a "PSOLAR EX" is. You'll see that I've highlighted them for you in the above image.
SO THE ANSWER TO THE ORIGINAL QUESTION = "facemask" / "face mask" / "cold weather face mask" / "ski mask", ie: some type of "mask". Bonus points are awarded for Googling some or all of those terms to see if any 1 is a "better" match for the item we were trying to identify. Super bonus-points (a "power-up", if you like) for clicking the "Images" link in Google and identifying the most-correct products visually.

I know you typed that post spazzing on me last night, TapemanPL, but as I didn't see it until today, congrats, you're my:

Yeah it does, that is why I was looking for and found the alternative. Thanks.

haha great explanation though sadly THEY'RE NOT CALLED FACE MASKS...
it's like someone calling a balaclava a ski mask it's not called a ski mask some idiot called it that and it stuck. because people call it by a certain name it doesn't mean thats what the actual name of it is...
facial tissue is not called keelex
lip balm is not called chapstick
etc...it's not called a face mask
