Just wanted to ask about contract work, I just got accepted for a 2 year contract as a comp tech. The situation is not weird, as I understand some of the reasons for it, maybe some of you in HR, or who are under contract can clarify for me, here goes:

Company A - Client of Company B, looking for worker, enlists help from Company B,
Company B - finds worker,(acting as hiring agency?), worker is paid(salary) through company B, but works @ company A. I have a few questions, Since I haven't signed the contract yet.

1: how does the deductions(CPP/EI/WSIB) apply? am I responsible for my 1/2 or all of it?(aka pay the gov't back at tax time) or does Company A/B take care of their 1/2?

2: is it possible to cancel out of the contract in case an emergency happens where I can't work at company A anymore?

3: something happens to company A and they get shut down after 1 year? is my contract void? or does company B still have to pay/find me work for the remaining year?

4: Logical reasoning and understanding of this situation is that I am a Company B employee, who is rented to Company A for 2 years, is that right? I am not entitled to holiday pay? or vacation time? sick days?

Any help would be great guys and gals, the most important question I would like clarification on is the deductions, since I would really hate to find out I was subcontracted and have to pay back a crazy amount when tax time comes.

Sounds like you're working for a temp agency? Your questions really depend on how you're hired... contract vs. temp staff.

1. Depends on your status.

2. Check your contract.

3. Check your contract.

4. Depends on your status, but employees are entitled to vacation time as per the law. No one is entitled to a bonus - companies pay them out as they see fit.

1. you are responsible for EI/Pension, it doesnt matter whehter you are on contract or not.

2. depending on type of contract, but i've never seen/heard of a contract where it is guaranteed and binding for the life of it except in professional sports. basically, you can get fired/laid off anytime and you can quit anytime.

3. your contract is not a guarantee of employment/income for the duration of the contract, if for whatever reason you are no longer needed/wanted, you will be let go and compensated according to labor law

4. contract or not, doesnt mean you will get bouns pay assuming it is avilable, even if not on contract you may not be entitled to it. usually if a person works under contract, holiday pay is added onto each paycheck so if you go on vacatino, you wont get holiday pay. but you can still request vacation even while on contract, you just wont get paid while you are on vacation since your vacation pay was already tacked on to your regular paycheck.

again, this is based on usual contracts that i've seen and know of, yours could be different though i do not think so.

there is basically no diff between contract and FT except you can be let go with no compensation once your contract is over unlike FT, and your benefits may be different than FT employees depending where/who you work for.
