Why are you so surprised at the cost? Wasn't it the same sorta thing when CD-R and DVD-R blank disks first came out? Just wait until next year and they'll be more reasonable and cheaper burners too.

so.... what's so good about this? i understand it gives a crispier image in terms of video

But in terms of just storing data, what is the difference between blue ray and conventional DVD?

This is a single layer BD disc, so each disc stores 25GB of data rather than 4.7GB for a standard dvd.

I see good use in this technology for cutting down the number of discs I use in data backup.

Everybody on this board is backing up right?

Right?

IF you're backing up a movie, and u make 1 coaster....you're almost at the price of a new movie.

maybe BR blanks will drive down the price of DL disks, which are still ridiculously priced.

actually.. the funniest part is... is that you are talking out of your ass

like the other dude said.. you are technologically limited in knowledge..

2x Bluray burn equals is about 8-10X DVD burning.. you can easily burn 25gb of data in about 30-45 minutes.

Probably about mid-year 16 and 32GB SDHC cards should be getting pretty cheap.

Might be worth looking at too, much much faster than a 2xBD in writes and reads, power consumption, portability, etc..

I still want someone to make a SATA to SDHC so I can get rid of my laptop harddrive.

Yep, and that is definitely the wave of the future - both HD-DVD and BR are coming much too late, and I feel that any disc-based storage is on a quick track to obsolescence.

Jaytee

Might be the future but it wont be any time soon. Once BR/HD DVD disc are mass produced, they will be a few bucks. Even when SDHC are mass produced they will still be way more expensive then a blank disk.

SD are mass produced now but Im not going to give a friend something on a SD card that I might not get back, but I will throw it on to a blank DL disc.

A bit late. The thing is, HD DVD Burners were announced 3 years ago but still no signs of it. I guess these two articles are probably a good sign for HD DVD owners, but since Toshiba is so behind, it makes sense for them to finally put these burners on the shelves.

Hmmm .... a "500GB" (~ 465GB) can only hold ~ 13 35GB-Bluray movies. It still 'costs' you ~ $8-9 per movies ...

The most worrisome part about using external HD to hold movies ... If it goes south, it will bring all the contents with it ...

many BluRay movies are significantly less than 35GB. Plus I'm sure BluRay recordables have a limited shelflife just like DVDs and CDs. Like my crappy memorex DVD+Rs that only last for 2 years before becoming corrupt :(.

And if you keep rotating the movies you backup, that could amount to cents/movie over its lifetime.

No way I'd pay that much per BR-R, and I'd definitely spring for Rewritable.

HD = Every one fails eventually, you just have to plan on that. So if you buy one for BU, ya better buy a second one (or a third).

Don't use cd/dvds/bd-r to backup. I have many cds and dvds from many years ago that simply don't work. My old 20GB hard drive still works fine.

At the current price, it makes more sense to just buy an external hard drive and backup. It's easier, faster, and cheaper. And you can disconnect them and store them at another location if you're afraid your house might burn down.

Wrong you are sir. Hard drive storage is around 2.2x more expensive then disc based dvd storage. Your porblem is you wanted to save 5x and bought low quality discs. I only buy Taiyo Yuden discs and not a single failed disc after 3 years and hundreds of burns. I use verbatim for DL. Not sure about quality compared to TY but they are the best for DL so what choice do I have? Been burning those for 1 year and no problems yet.

As for these blu-ray discs, Im not going to bite. First off, blu-ray burners are still too much. I wont buy in until I can get one for $200. Second, Single layer is useless as most movies are dual layer, which means 25gb is only good for storage, not backups. And if its storage your after, 4 DL quality DVDs is alot less then 1 sketchy blu-ray. When the discs are new like this theres no quality control. Dont expect anything you burn on these blu-ray discs to be playable in 3 years from now. Best to wait on both hd-dvd and blu-ray to evolve further before you jump into the computer burning market with them. Also, I personally dont start buying into the media untilll quality discs are $2 or less each

That's why you always buy good media like Verbatims, instead of being cheap by buying Memorex and saving only a few cents per DVD.

For the sake of argument, at the price it is falling at.. it might be better to use HDDs for backup in the near future.. ie. when 1 TB drives hit the $99 mark.

It's easier to hot swap one 1000 GB drive than to swap 212 DVD5s. In terms of convenience and physical storage space, it can't be beat. At its current price, it is already of better value than DVD9s for data storage.

The only concern that is present is the mechanical part of the hdd that gets stuck if not used for x many years. It's one of those rumors I have heard but haven't disproved yet.
