View Full Version : Pioneer 5080HD Plasma 1999.99$ in the US (BB)

I just checked the US site and the price is 1999.99$, when you put the item in the cart. That's 1500$ cheaper, than over here in Canada.
That's kinda pathetic and might worth a drive down to the border.
Is there any Canadian retailer who would match US prices?
Anyway, i thought i let you guys know. The TV is rated "best plasma" on numerous sites/magazines.

I know it's 720p, but it looks un-freakin-believable in store. And what a rip off  for Canadians.... I was pissed the other day finding the panasonic th42px75 on for $899 on a US site, lowest I've seen is $1299 CDN. BOO-URNS on that deal, and now this.
EDIT: Actually, I think I saw this Pioneer at xs cargo for $1999...but it's xs cargo, YMMV

I agree, this TV is awesome and the price here sucks! I have the 5070 and its amazing, the picture is better than any 1080p I've seen and as stated above CNET ranks it higher than every 1080p out there. I want the 5080 for the extra HDMI inputs.
Has anyone seen a decent price in Canada or am I going to the US?

Thats nice .. I bought my 5080HD for $2350 a few weeks ago for the bedroom, love these kuro plasmas (my 6010FD is king)
futureshop had it online for $2474, so I bought it at visions with a printout, and got an additional 5% off due to the pm. ... so .. $2350 + tax .. pretty damn good for a local Canadian price.
Excellent set btw ... love the blacks ... trust me you'll never go back. sorry but ... the kuro blacks puts lasts year's 5070 to shame (which i used to have in the bedroom)
also don't fall into the 1080 hype too much, the difference is minor on a 50'' or less, unless your only a few feet away or have a 60'' set (its so beautiful) .. the enhanced blacks, and color accuracy are much more important that resolution.
Search for review on any of the pioneer kuro tv's: 4280, 5080, 5010, 6010 .. and you'll find out why they are noted as some of the very best tv's out there.
Also the XScargo pioneer tv mentioned is the 5071..... which is not the same as the 5080 that the topic is about, far worse, and older tech.

I bought washer and drier in Buffalo area, had to pay local state taxes, no refund, no taking this into consideration when paying gst and pst to Canada customs. They gave me real hassle btw, cause the price was too low in their opinion. The whole 9 yards - car search, empty the pockets, very hostile. Mind you I had the receipt.

From my POV..
Don't count on much more price movement from Pioneer here in Canada. Our local Atlas AV shop indicated that once the national supply of 5080's is depleted that's it for that model. Until then pricing will remain "competitive" (read: unmoved) with other Canadian HDTV's. Apparently, Pioneer wishes to move on with new and better product.
The US pricing appears a different story as their economy is tanking and with so much comp stock, Pioneer had no choice but to dump.
As well, it seems the HDTV reviewers have become our own demise, we Canadians and Europeans keep paying through the nose for premium products so there is no need to drop any prices.
Apparently, the FS pricing (for the 5080) during Boxing Day week was an anomaly and a lost leader for another game plan to keep buyers all to themselves.
And no, purchases from the US will have no Pioneer warranty attached once outside that country.
Sorry for the sad news >:(

I'm not surprised. Bestbuy is the company that expressly screws over canadians with policy.
Take a look at their service plans on their U.S. web site (extended warranties). Someone specifically set out to undercut canadians by offering less service (wear & tear, TV blulbs, laptop batteries are all covered in the U.S.)

Sorry bud the new panny's won't be better than the new Kuro's. The Kuro's are a truly amazing TV you get what you pay for, but panasonics are equally as good and way better deal for the price. Almost 50% of the price of Kuro. I don't think you'll ever see Kuro blacks in another plasma manufacturer you'd have ot wait until OLED. Furthermore $1999 for the 5080 isn't a HOT deal and it's coming from the US, I would bury this post.

Panasonic is going to be producing Pioneers plasma TV's
mjl_toronto
Mar 12th, 2008, 09:57 AM
To clarify, Pioneer will continue to produce their own plasma televisions. They're only outsourcing the 'panel' which I think refers to the glass. I believe Pioneer used to be set apart because their glass manufacturing was the best. However, everyone else has caught up so there is no point in them continuing to produce their own. So they are now purchasing glass from Panasonic but will still retain their Kuro technology and image processing technology.
http://pioneer.jp/press/pdf/ir/080307_restructuring-e.pdf
I just purchased the 5080 from 2001 Audio Video for $2500. It's not as cheap as the U.S. but it's a hell of a lot better than FS or BB right now. I believe the cost for this model is $2400 so you won't get it for a lot less, especially not for $2000.
For those sitting on the fence on this model, I'd hurry up because stock is running out quick.

It doesn't refer to the glass.
The panel is the actual plasma panel. Which means Pioneer would still make their own Pioneer branded sets but the actual screen will be made by Panasonic.

When stock was starting to run dry on the 5070 (back in the summer), I remember Costco got them in stock all of a sudden, and were selling for $2799 + offered a $500 off coupon. I paid $3300 for my 5070 a few months earlier.
With that said - I'm willing to bet we will see the 5080s at Costco in the coming months, likely at a smokin price (with the benefit of their great return policy)

I don't think so. I've been looking at buying one of these babies over the past several months. Waiting for an on-par US price drop ..but alas, not in Canada. Pioneer had such a winner that pretty well all stock in North America has sold out! ..and what's left ain't being discounted much.
The "current?" model in Costco ain't the Kuro as it's 2006 base consumer model. If you are keeping uptodate, the Canadian returns policy will shortly be mirroring the US "limited returns policy" for most big consumer electronics.
Current Pio stock in FS is apparently repackaged returns selling for near MSRP no less.
FYI, new Pioneer 9g models coming first part of June. The 10g Pioneers happening in '09 - - those will be made with a specially contructed Panny panel @ perhaps 9mm ..all nu tech:-0

When are these due in Canada. I'm sitting on the fence, would love to get the PDP-5080HD if it goes on sale again, but I'd also like to see what the pricing and reviews will be on the new Panasonics.
This is a great buy right now, TH42PZ77, but the 50" is what I really want. My wife wants to get the TH42PZ77 and put it in the spare room. This would be good, I could use my Macintosh as a PVR and I have an extra 5.1 Yamaha receiver, but I'd have to get speakers.
I'm not crazy about having a second living room in a spare room so hopefully a good 50", for around $2500 comes around soon in the spring.

Congrats on buying an excellent set! I would have no problem shelling out $2500 for the 5080 Kuro. However, my Sony RPTV is still serving me very well and I feel guilty dumping a perfectly fine (better than most LCD) set just to buy the latest and greatest.

Almost 50% of the price of Kuro. I don't think you'll ever see Kuro blacks in another plasma manufacturer you'd have ot wait until OLED. Furthermore $1999 for the 5080 isn't a HOT deal and it's coming from the US, I would bury this post.
How is $1999 not a hot price?? Has anyone even seen it at that price lately?
I'd buy it immediately at $1999!

I've read reports saying the new Panny will be about at the Kuro level in terms of black level. Pioneer is using Panny's panel so it's not hard to see that it is at least possible that Panny could have licensed or incorporated Pioneer's technology in their new generation of plasma.
And Panny is always cheaper than Pionner. I'm holding out on buying the Kuro now after learing that the new Pannys are coming out.

Hey just wondering from sites listed before (www.cameraaddict.com ) or (www.bwayphoto.com) has anyone bought from these sites out of New York??
Others I see listed that are cheaper are deals south online BUT I beleive you lose warranty and pay for insurance+shipping ?
I was looking at the New Panasonic PZ85U only offered in US with the 30000:1 contrast and 3 hdmi connections,1080P...Any thoughts?
