Hi, I got an interview with AMD for an internship for 16 months.
Anyone got any good tips for interviews? Or can anyone give a good answer to the question:
1) Tell me about yourself ?
Thx.

Wow go to your career info sessions. They will tell you how to prepare, answer and what's expected. For the rest of the stuff (technical, personality, etc...), it's all on you.

Do not mention to AMD that Intel is kicking their asses.

Don't sweat it. They always hire U of T and Waterloo students.

Good luck. If you get the job; remember to hook up a random RFDer with a job there:D.

AMD is a sweatshop now. Severely understaffed and very poor morale . Will they even be around until the end of your internship? Something to think about.

They will be around. Just like how Apple went through bad times, these guys are going their tough times as well. There will always be a need for a 2nd processor manufacturer.

That could be one of the questions he asks - what AMD is doing to turn itself around.
The company is doing horribly financially... and when I used to work at ATI, things were pretty glum whenever they were on the losing end of the graphics card battle. Now with the merger, not only do they have slower graphics cards, but also slower CPUs too! I bet the work environment is pretty bad right now.

lol I actually got a Job offer from AMD/ATI in Markham as a software QA person..
these idiots would not budge on trying to pay me as a new grad Computer Engineer with 2 years experience at larger companies $40,000/year!!
I told them to screw off and went to IBM for MUCH more.
Go there for the experience... but I don't recommend anyone settle on that sinking Titanic..

If you can't answer this simple question, then I highly encourage you to go to a one on one interview session at the PEY office, and no they're not wondering what your favorite food and color are. There are a number of very popular questions in job interviews, and this is definitely one of them. Others are 'what do you know about (company)' and 'what attracted you to the position'.
I'd recommend seeing Sherri Brown-Howe. I went to her before my first PEY interview, she gave me loads of very good advice, and told me exactly where I needed improving.
Good luck.

Yeah 40 k is an entry level salary.
IBM does offer a good starting salary, However its REALLY tough to get promoted there or even a mere salary increase unless your in IBM:GS as a consultant.

I think 40k is way below average for a new grad engineer. It's actually the lowest offer I got and I applied to some much smaller firms and startups that all offered more straight out of school. From a company like AMD it's almost a slap in the face.. The good part about IBM is the bonuses recieved if they kick ass at the end of the year.. last year some people I know pocketed around $15k on top of their base salary because of profit in the last quarter.
Actually I have a few friends at AMD who I meet up with at First Markham place every week.. They tell me about what kind of nightmare it is there and how they been firing and replacing many of the senior staff for cheaper hires or forcing them to take paycuts to keep their jobs.
The Experience here is great!!! But don't trust this place with a family and mortgage hanging over you in the long run..
