It is a Bluray/Hddvd READER and a CD/DVD burner/reader.

Nice find though

Too bad a stand-alone unit does not retail for this much. I'll be over it like white on rice.

Ya, the price on this unit is dropping pretty fast. I bought mine at NCIX during Boxing Day/Week sale for $240 + tax/shipping and it came to $262. So, $245 is warm at best.

I am looking for, I think, a dvd player. Is it worth buying something like this? I am a total nul regarding this question and so would appreciated any suggestions. For instance, I think you can buy a cheap dvd player for about forty dollars. what is the best approach?

This isn't a stand alone player. It's a drive for a computer. Right now your best bet would be to pick up a cheaper DVD player then wait until there's a winner in the war and prices begin to fall. Then pick up a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD player.

Realistically there's no point in spending over $100 on a DVD player anymore.

Perfect as I run my HT though the computer but does this output at 1080P?Anitec had this on boxing day @ $225 but I passed as there's not enough HD media out there and these things keep dropping in price. Would buy it if it was a HD burner.

ATi 2600xt or X3850 seems like an ideal choice.

Blu-Ray will win because it has like 75% of studio support

Betamax started with 100% of studio support. We all know how that went.

VHS won the war in the end because it was cheaper for consumers (and allowed them to record more TV shows on one tape).

People jump on way too many bandwagons nowadays. It took 6 years for Betamax to die. The HD format war is not over.

We've "Been Here, Done This Already" !! Why would you start a new thread ?

Lets not start another thread about the same product for a few dollars difference in price !! And start yet another HD-DVD/Blu-ray debate all over again !!

I'll be careful if you intend to use your videocard DVI for 1080p output. Make sure the card has HDCP otherwise it won't work.

Even running in VGA analog cable you might run into studdering and chopping problems.

could anyone tell me if you have this drive and say a video card that is hdcp compliant and you have a tv with an hdmi port. would you hook up your computer via the dvi from the video card to the tv?? or would you use the pc input on your tv??

Saca_Saca

This is correct.
You would use the HDMI port on the TV. (DVI to HDMI cable).

I have this drive. It plays movies fine, but I'm having trouble playing back the backups that I ripped with AnyDVD.

It's 250 at NCIX so have a look there too, it might be cheaper after tax and shipping.

There's a huge thread about this drive at the AVS forums.

http://avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=927751

Pros: Cheapest dual-format player if you have a good computer close to your TV. Allows you to rip backups of your disks and store them on the HD. ($5 worth of HD space per movie.) With AnyDVD HD, it allows you to watch full-res movies if you don't have an HDCP compliant display, which you can't do if you get a standalone player.

Cons: All the potential glitches that happen anytime a computer gets involved in something. The AVS thread has 1200 posts going back to September, many of them due to issues with PowerDVD. (Although Arcsoft is about to release an HD player that's tested very well in beta.)

If you want to avoid the hassle, get a PS3 and wait for Universal and Paramount to start making movies in BR.

LOL, actually, I started this thread on October 17th (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=503384), when the drive was briefly $259 at NCIX. I got mine then.

as predicted, 25gb single layer blowout.

totally agreed that it is still way to expensive, but when the drop hits, it will be like the dvd-r drop.

Hey, that link doesn't work.

This is the deal pretty much now: Blu Ray's coming out with a new type of 'software' which standalone players can't upgrade to, only the PS3 can. So if you're looking for gaming and a Blu Ray player, go PS3. $399/$499 for the only good Blu Ray player right now (the only one worth buying because of the 2.0 business)

If you're looking into HD-DVD prices are starting to fall on the standalone players in the States, so you may be able to find one cheap, if not here, in the states. Upconversion & an HD-DVD player for $100-150? Not bad.

If you don't have a High-Def. TV yet, you can find a regular DVD player pretty cheap at some places that will last you a while. I picked up a Toshiba DVD player 3 years ago for $40 (on Boxing Day) so prices are very cheap now for a temporary player until you dive into the next-gen DVD players ;)

Anyways, about the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray business, it's not over until it's over. Until Toshiba or Sony declares that it's over it's not going to end. Anyone can say HD-DVD lost, or hell even a year down the road if Blu-Ray's in the same situation you can't count them out until they're finished. I'm not trying to cause a huge war here, there's many other threads on that already, I'm just trying to give my opinion on this subject matter.
