Wow, this is so messed up!!

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/pressass/20080111/tuk-separated-twins-married-each-other-6323e80_1.html

Twins separated at birth and adopted by separate parents later married each other without realising they were brother and sister.

The pair were granted an annulment after a High Court judge ruled the marriage had never validly existed.

The identities of the British pair and details of the relationship and marriage have been kept secret.

But it is known that they were separated soon after birth.

They were never told they were twins.

They did not discover they were blood relatives until after the wedding.

The case was uncovered by Lord Alton in a conversation with a High Court judge.

He used it to highlight perceived deficiencies in the Human Embryology and Tissues Bill, currently going through Parliament.

oh man, that is so wrong............there was a Mad TV skit a while back that made fun of such a scenario but who would have thunk it that there would be a real live case of this.

They must have done the nasty together...........man, both parties will have nightmares forever !!

Wow, that's got to be so bizarre to find out you married your sister/brother and never knew. I wonder how they ended up finding out after the marriage. I guess adoption records?

Probably not as low as we might expect. With the ridiculous secrecy surrounding adoptions, there's no reason to expect it wouldn't happen. Besides knowing your bio family being necessary for medical history, this is just another reason there shouldn't be all these secrecy laws. It's not like giving a child up for adoption is anything shameful. I've just never understood these laws. It's not like the child has only a certain reserve of love, they can love 2 sets of parents. And IMO, the more people there are to love a child the better.

And the less chance of something like this happening.

wow, their kids would be even more messed up than most inbred if they are identical twins. If you think the inbreds in the royal family are bad, this tops them all.

You do realize that identical twins are identical...same sex...couldn't possibly produce a child between them.

Meanwhile, this may not be so far fetched if you consider all the people out there now who are from sperm doners. Lots of chance of them being half-siblings and not know at all and no way to trace unless their mothers happen to help them out.

The article didn't said "identical twins". A pair of twins could also be made up of a male and a female you know...

This is interesting below and addresses the fact that this could actually happen...

"...Nor has He made your adopted sons your (biological) sons. Such is (only) your (manner of) speech by your mouths. But Allah tells (you) the Truth, and He shows the (right) Way. Call them by (the names of) their fathers; that is juster in the sight of Allah. But if you know not their father's (names, call them) your brothers in faith, or your trustees. But there is no blame on you if you make a mistake therein. (What counts is) the intention of your hearts. And Allah is Oft-Returning, Most Merciful."

(Qur'an 33:4-5)

The guardian/child relationship has specific rules under Islamic law, which render the relationship a bit different than what is common adoption practice today. The Islamic term for what is commonly called adoption is kafala, which comes from a word that means "to feed." In essence, it describes more of a foster-parent relationship. Some of the rules in Islam surrounding this relationship:

* An adopted child retains his or her own biological family name (surname) and does not change his or her name to match that of the adoptive family.
* An adopted child inherits from his or her biological parents, not automatically from the adoptive parents.
* When the child is grown, members of the adoptive family are not considered blood relatives, and are therefore not muhrim to him or her. "Muhrim" refers to a specific legal relationship that regulates marriage and other aspects of life. Essentially, members of the adoptive family would be permissible as possible marriage partners, and rules of modesty exist between the grown child and adoptive family members of the opposite sex.
* If the child is provided with property/wealth from the biological family, adoptive parents are commanded to take care and not intermingle that property/wealth with their own. They serve merely as trustees.

I think that's largely an urban legend. There are some instances but people just really like to highlight it and make fun. I heard it's quite common to have cousins marry in some cultures.

It's very common in Portuguese families to have 1st cousins marry each other.

In other news, the writers of Days of Our Lives have been quoted as saying, "why the hell didn't we think of this first?" :D

id feel real sorry for these two if they did it prior to the wedding which is likely in today's world.

Good point, forgot about that. But its not impossible. In rare rare cases, identical twins can have different genetic karyotypes, especially in sex chromosomes.
