The commute that i'm interested in is from Milton (say 401/Trafalgar) to Toronto (Yonge/Lawrence) so ideally you would want to stay on the 401. I'm actually only interested in rush hour commute as i'm trying to figure out how long it would take to get to work from milton.
Thanks for the reaponses guy keep them coming.

It would take a doubling of my salary to do such a long, soul-sucking commute every day. I hate traffic, though.

I drive almost the opposite way everyday but the east bound 401 in the morning seems horrible. I would say it would probably take you 1 to 1 1/2 hr between 7-9am.

I drive from the 403/401 all the way over to Progress Ave in Scarborough, and I can usually do that in 40-45 minutes in morning rush hour traffic. I've had the odd day where accidents make that commute closer to 1.5-2 hours, and the occasional light day where I can do it in just over 30 minutes.
From 401/Trafalgar to the 401//403 junction, you can expect the traffic to be heavier because there are less lanes and no express/collector. Also, as you will be getting off the 401 at Yonge, expect the traffic in the collector lanes to be heavier there as well. My estimate would be anywhere from 1-1.25 hrs in normal morning rush hour traffic, but that's just a guess. Hope this helps.

Around the hour mark. I have found though that traffic is worse on the way back going that way at night then in the morning going in. I don't know why however. The worst spot is the 410 merge with the 401 westbound. That place makes me ever so pissed.

You have about 10 lanes of traffic merging into 3-4 where 2 highways meet, while going into Toronto you gain lanes, that's why. Horribly designed area.

+1 They need at least two more lanes for the 401 running to Winston Churchill or farther, and at least two more lanes for the 410. My commute home is great up until about Dixie, which is where the westbound backup begins. :(

There are some plans by the MTO to build more lanes and create a collector/express lane system from the 403/401/410 interchange to at least the Mississauga Road exit, although they obviously haven't gotten very far in those plans. Although they do have enough space on the north and south sides of the highway to build at least 2 extra lanes for each path, so it should be doable when they eventually come up with the money.

If that ever happens, it will be a welcome relief... Just don't make it a dumb HOV lane.
As for OP's initial question, I've done similar routes before. For a week period, I've averaged about 1 hr 15min... (403/Winston Churchill to Yonge/Eglinton)
Exit at Avenue is a lot better than Yonge exit.

Yonge exit is *fine* now since the Hogg's Hollow bridge reconstruction is finally DONE!
The new Yonge exit is HUGE now...
