Hey guys - hopefully no flames on this post... I've never really sold anything to strangers via craigslist or kijiji, but I have a sale coming up. Is there anything I should know about accepting money from a seller? just the basic meet up in a public place and check cash for counterfeit bills routine, or should i ask for a different payment/go to an ATM with buyer?
I'm probably being too cautious...sale is for under $200. but any advice from seasoned sellers would be appreciated.
MODS: not sure where to post this. please move it around if needed.

just count it out. Rub the number. If it has a texture that means its real.
If the hologram is multi colored its legit.
meet in a public place.

As in tell the guy to paypal me money, and I'll meet him somewhere with his item? Isn't paypal still risky - I've gotten 3 emails already from people in nigeria offering to paypal me $200. haha!

Thats ********. Who's to say the seller does not want to go and rob the guy while at the ATM? Anyone with a gram of common sense would not do this.

My advice is don't worry about the 'feelings' of your buyer. Count out the money and check the bills for counterfeits before the guy leaves.
If you think it's rude to count the money in front of the buyer, then don't meet face to face. Do everything through EMT and only ship your sales.
But, 99% of the time it's a guy wanting to sell with a buyer who legitimately wants the product at a good price. It usually happens without any problems, and both parties are respectful of each other (at least is the case with RFD, in my experience :))

Don't use PayPal if you guys are doing a local exchange. There's no proof that the product changed hands, so he can go back and file a claim with PayPal saying he did not receive the item, in which he will win for sure.

heatware.
Ottawa is a safER place than GTA where most of the posters are from...and where a little heightened sense of caution is well worthwhile.
I've traded in Ottawa LOTSA times...even sold $500 in cash once no worries.
When you're asking for payment up front, via AssPal (paypal :D), ENSURE YOU GET A WRITTEN SIGNATURE OF DELIVERY OF SAID ITEM when you do the local meet-up. Last thing you want is for the ASS of a buyer to file a charge back claiming "you never delivered the product, and there is no tracking to prove it". Yep, that scam has been pulled on a few people (thankfully not myself).
PUBLIC BUSY places are safest. 24/7 Tim Hortin's are good for those 11-1AM meets., otherwise, food courts are great. "I'm the one with the RFD t-shirt " always works nice ;).
Good luck...and I hope you pop your cherry and want to do it again very soon. It's addictive.
