Some people are just suceptible to them like me...seems to affect many Asians. You guys aren't helping much.
Here's a solution though that many people are not aware of. It's a product called Oral Medic Barrier Solution, it's available in Canadian Pharmacies and worldwide for about $9.99 for 3 applications. It's not availble in the U.S. because it's not F.D.A. approved. :cheesygri
It's a safer over the counter alternative to Debacterol (which is prescription only). Many mouth sores or ulcers don't heal because the body's immune system white cells mistakenly interpret the rehealing wound as an invading agent so it stays open and painful, also the necrotic tissue doesn't scab over as it normally should and the sensory nerves stay very sensitive. Oral Medic or HybenX basically quickly burns a small area of outer layer and deadens the nerves by causterizing it with something similar to sulphuric acid. Once cauterized the nerves nolonger feel and it's sealed off from your mouth/saliva, etc. and scabs over quickly. You don't feel pain anymore and it'll heal in a day versus 3 weeks to more than a month like many mouth sores or mouth ulcers take.

Ya iv'e used that stuff on it before.. seem to speed up healing.. I use to get alot of them .. but with proper rest, lots of fluid, and I stopped taking Vitamin C chewable tablets. I haven't had one for months. I did some research on this and apparently somethign in the Vitamin C can cause cankas in some people. The exact cause is not known.

so you've got an irritating little infection that doesn't seem to go away no matter how much you want to get rid of it. now you know what the rest of rfd feels like everytime you post.

They used to make stuff called Extract of Wild Strawberry. I think it was for intestinal issues or something. Swish and spit that stuff around for a few seconds and it burned that canker sore off for good. God it burned but it worked like a hot damn. I've never found anything since that had you back talking and eating normally an hour later.

i rinse with listerine a lot when i get cankers.
Seems to heal it REALLY quickly for me, faster than the "gargle salt water" classic solution.

It's citric acid in general that causes cankers for a lot of people. I found out the hard way after suffering for many years by making an effort to remember what I ate in the days prior to an outbreak. The common element for me was orange juice. I cut that out of my diet and the sores went away. I later deduced it was citric acid in general and stayed away from any juice that contained it.
It's ok to take Vitamin C, just not the liquid/chewable type - the citric acid has to contact topically to trigger the sores.
I agree they're quite painful and can last over a week. I too find that Listerine (the original or cool mint) helps. Has to be Listerine, not the weaker clone mouthwashes.

Oh SNAP!
Few weeks ago I had a BAD case of canker sore but decided to tough it out since I was craving for indian food. HUGE MISTAKE. Took me 2 hours to finish the meal and I was in the pain the next few days.
Had to goto walk-in and told him I had the "mother-of-all canker sores". Doctor looked at it and said, wow, thats one big canker sore.

if the canker sore is fully developed, there's really nothing you can do...
but for me, when the canker sore is fully developed, i like to put ice cube on it to make it numb and it won't hurt as much.
i find that by rinsing your mouth with mouth wash more frequently, it will help speed up the healing process.
next time, if you think a canker sore will come up, you can put some oral pain reliever cream (canker sore cream etc.,) and it should stop it from fully developing.
hope this helps.

I use to get canker sores very often... then I got braces, and it stopped. I do get the occasional canker sore once a while. I think my gums got damaged when I sleep. My diet has been pretty consistent.

you can buy stuff from the pharmacy (Shopper Drug Mart, etc) to put on the canker sore and it will mask the pain.. I used something called Kanka and it worked like a charm..
