yep... exactly.
You apply and you'll automatically get hired.
You wont get hired if you apply online or through fax though. They are too lazy to check those b/c theres always a lineup @ their recruitment offices.

There is a very high amount of turn over.
Just get their phone number and find out the actual address of their recruitment office. Go in person and they will hire you on the spot as long as you have the following.
-read\write english
-have no major disability (I seen people with cerebral palsy causing a limp or awkward posture)
-High school diploma
-can work nights/weekends/graveyards

On the other hand some companies will humor you by giving 2 interviews or make you take a multiple choice 'exam'.

I used to work for intercon. It was a fairly professional company. G4S and Total security management were good ones too.
Intercon had these 'courses' you could take in order to get higher levels. With higher levels you get more pay. But the positions requiring higher levels usually have more experience. You might not get to sit around doing nothing as much.
They were bird courses too. Just sit through for the hour or 2, and then complete the multiple choice test.

u dont have to be big and strong either. For some security positions you sit all day and watch monitors. My friend is 5'5 and like 120 pounds. . . and he's a doper so don't worry bout drug testing

I can't say for sure if it's how all companies work but the pay depends on what site you're placed at. It's usually $10-$15/hr.

All most contract security companies care about is having warm bodies in uniform, providing the illusion of due dilligence, rather than having anyone actually having a clue what they are doing / allowed to do most of the time.

So yes, it really doesn't take much to get hired.

If you want a high paying security job, you'll wanna go with in-house security companies (ie. eaton centre security) but you'll need experience. Contract companies like intercon, g4s, paragon initially will start you off at $10/hr with no experience.

same with Yorkdale and STC.
they pay well.. $15/hr.
But you'll run into more problems... you'll actually get to see some action... eg. Fights and shoplifters =\

A buddy of mine works for eatons security and he says whenever you need to do an arrest you usually radio for backup so I guess it won't be as bad. Plus malls that big usually have like 10 + guards working.

Looking to apply as a security guard too :cheesygri

just a few Qs:

Where are common places to apply for such a job and good places to work as security guard with no experience (share your work exp)?

Do places offer part-time positions?

Is there an age preference i.e. someone who is 19 vs. someone who is 22 vs. someone who is 25.

thats true... you gotta get backup no matter what.
You will never get in trouble if you back off from a tense situation. As long as you write down everything you see and remember eg. descriptions, direction they run into etc... You will be fine.

Go with big companies like Intercon or Paragon. They have lots of sites if you work for them chances are you are likely to get to work near where you live. They will hire people with no experience because they offer training (which you get paid for now) and also you'll get your cpr and first-aid. They offer part-time but most of the time are looking for only full time. Part timers usually are floaters (you pick up shifts that the full-timers book off). I dont think theres an age preference, just if your able to do evenings/overnights then your all good. Hope this helps.

haha yes.. you'll also get a lot of construction duty.
most insurance companies require a security guard to supervise renovations to any building.

so lets say they were replacing toilets over night @ a shopping mall... you have to go there and watch them do it for 5 hrs. :o

Nobodys mentioned Casino Security.

It's easy job, pay starts at $15 and after a year you're making $19.

CPR training is an asset.

Keep an eye out on the OLG.ca careers website if anyone is interested.

What about commissionaires (security for government buildings)?

Same thing.

Standard entry-level job.

Illusion of security, at most observe and report.

yes entry level security is easy to get in...but if u wanna get into the good-payin security like Cadillac Fairview malls, Yorkdale, you will have to gain more experience on ur belt and get out of the contract security world.

Two Law enforcing forums have tons of great info on them.

www.bluelineforums.com

I'm planning tostart my work in security this summer too.

I've also heard Ontario Hydro, not sure which of the companies pays really good, but I don't know how the heck to get into one of those.

usually a police foundations diploma, or a few years doing simple contract security work will do it.
Securita's is a pretty good company too. They have a lot of in house training courses (similar to INtercon).

I believe Toronto Hydro is patrolled by INtercon Security.
If you join that company you can take all the in house training course and get up to a "level 4". From there you can work @ "high profile sites". Basically the training up to the level 4 allows you to take positions with higher authourity. You'll be allowed to work @ sites that are higher risk, or require increased customer service.

For example Security @ ryerson university requires you to be trained up to a level 4.

ah I have a pfp diploma, I just don't know who to contact. Intercon eh, this level 4 training, how long do you have to be with the company and how much is the pay for these sites?

If i were you.. I would sign up as a part time S/Guard. That way you have time to do all the in house training.
If you really wanted to you could train up to a level 3 guard in 1 month.
The level 4 courses dont run that often, so it may take you a few months to get up to a level 4.

But if you really wanted to you could get into a high profile sites with level 3 training, as long as you eventually get level 4 training.

Back when i was with intercon lvl4 gets you $14/hr min. and up to $17/hr with experience.

they have many other level 4 sites that pay a lot. For example some of the hospital, airports and government buildings they patrol.

intercon seems to be the best out there in terms of trainin and reputation...

For those who worked there, how long does it take to get trained up to be a level 4 guard??

i believe you have to be bondable too (no criminal record)

Does anybody know if intercon checks your references? I have been running an online business for a few years and don't really have any work related references. I'm looking for a security company that hires right on the spot, I need a break from working online.

I'm currently working part time for a small company as a event security. I got hired on the spot with no experience at all. But, the pay is just minimum to start off so thats why I got hired so easily.
