I worked at Staples for about 4 years -mainly throughout high school and a bit of university. I worked customer service, copy centre and cash. It was a fun environment and they were pretty flexible with shifts, especially when you are in school. The only time that they do not let you book time off is during the back to school rush (August 15-September 20th or so)
In my experience, everyone got a long really well and we often planned get togethers after work. I started off at $8.40/hourly roughly about 7 years a go. ...I think they may start you off at a little more now. The only down side of working at Staples was that when it came to the summer time and most students were able to work more hours, they often could not schedule you for many hours as it was very slow until mid-August.

I worked at staples for 10 months. I didn't mind it until they really started pressuring me into selling warranties. If you don't sell them you get **** and your hours docked and given to someone else. It's a pretty ****** system and when I look back at it I'm still pretty angry about it.

worked there for 4 months. Its alright i guess i worked as aisles and computer tech once in awhile. Cool co-workers but the managers i had was pretty anal. If you kinda underperform under their work system they'll cut your hours.

Worked there for 7 1/2 years (damn, that's a long time). Since it was one of the main jobs I had while I was in high school and university it worked out well b/c I'd always get 50% off all the clearance back to school supplies!
I worked Customer Service and Copy Centre. Some customers will really piss you off (patience anyone?!). Since there's no commission we frequently had cool contests of who could sell the most ESPs (tech) or FPP (furniture) and got prizes like gift cards and movie passes.
Co-workers were okay... social functions like summer BBQs, bowling nights and Christmas parties are cool and were paid for. Had some really cook managers.
I hated working Back-To-School b/c all the rowdy kids would come in and mess up the store, and people would never put things back where there got them. Thank goodness everyone had to pitch in with returns and the store was usually dead btwn the extended hours of 9 and 10 so we can clean up.
Pay was decent for the time that I worked there. I'm pretty sure it's better than the average retail pay out right now.
If your brother is planning on buying a computer soon, working at Staples is a good choice b/c you don't have to pay for it up front. I've bought 3 PCs there over the years and the payments all come off my paycheque (e.g. $50/biweekly) for a year, til it's paid off.
There's part time benefits, but you have to work more than 21 hours/ week, I think. I always worked less since I couldn't really stand the customers the more I worked there, so I didn't get PT benefits... :D
