Last time I travelled I bought some blue cross travel insurance. Can anyone recommend me another company with better benefits at a lower cost? Any personal experience welcome.

CAA is pretty good with their rates I usually find. I find that RBC is more expensive and being now actual office, you have to do everything by phone etc.. so trying to get service if anything is wrong can be a pain.

How often do you travel? About how many days per trip?

What if I go backpacking for 6 months, what kind of travel insurance should I get?

Do I even need travel insurance?

I have had CAA family plan before. The annual family plans are good if your going on more than one trip a year IMHO.

I'm thinking about getting a Petro-Canada Travel famly plan so I can also collect on points:cheesygri

Can someone convince me into buying insurance? I just see it as an unnecessary cost. I mean, what are the chances something will happen?

The Minute there is a problem with Your claim CAA will walk away and let you
deal with the insurance broker ! pay attention to "pre-existing condition" clause. With Blue Cross there are no worries ...

Another thing most poeple don't realize is that your work extended health care plan normally includes a pretty good travel insurance plan free of charge. check with yours if you have extended health

ever been to a hospital in the states? you cant just flash your ohip card there and expect to walk away after getting medical assistance.
what are the chances of you falling down the stairs tripping while walking getting small cuts etc while on vacation?

Check out http://www.worldnomads.com/ and http://www.insuremytrip.com/ .

Personally, my Gold Visa provides travel insurance upto $1,000,000.

mgronqui, whether or not insurance is a wise financial decision depends on where you go. In some places, you only way of getting decent treatment is going to be a med evac, which is really expensive.

That would rather depend upon the company. The coverage that I get is basically the same as any travel health insurance that you can buy separately without any pre-existing condition clauses.

Of course, the key point is that you check out and understand what is covered and what is not covered.

Unnecessary cost, lol. They call it *INSURANCE* for a reason... because you NEVER know when you'll NEED it.

My brother went to Asia, got a bad fever and a $6k hospital bill. In the end, he just had to pay the $59 deductible and the travel insurance vendor paid the rest w/o issue.

It all depends on your company. Mine is exactly the same as if I went out and bought one for $$$ so it works for my needs.

I've purchased 2x before from president's choice. You can get flight cancellation + medical or just medical.

If you are in the US somewhere and need an ambulance or air ambulance and then a hospital stay, drugs, etc, you will be on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars!

My last trip was only about 10 days long to Europe but it only makes sense to me to spend the ~$25 to get the insurance because the costs are so high if something happens. Not worth the risk IMO.

most experienced travelers will tell you if you can't afford travel insurance you can't afford to travel.

what happened when you are walking down the street and BAM, a car runs into you and you need immediate medical attention. But the country you are in can't provide it too you so you need to be emergency transported into a nearby country. $30,000 dollars. What? Don't have that kind of cash on you, good luck. Good bye.
