Land Rover and Hummer have the worst reliability on the North American car market. The number of problems per 100 vehicles is very high for LR I believe. I'd go with VDub. There's a video of Touareg pulling an airplane on youtube btw :D

I always been a Fan of Land Rover. Yes their reliability isn't up there but with regular maintenance its fine. Plus how long do you plan on keeping the vehicle?
I had a Discovery and never had any problems with it, and my neighbor owns a Discovery and so far he hasn't had any problems.

Being RFD.. I'll suggest... a Toyota RAV4!! LOL just kidding...
VW Touareg would be my pick... not really a fan of the LR3's styling....
Are you buying from the states or here? Try to see if you can find a V10 TDI...

Attracted by the low resale values of both? Ever wonder why?

Not really a fan of either, but of the two the LR3 would be my choice by far.

of course the 2004-5 has it issues...low resale value?.. %99 of SUV that is 3-4 years old will lose %40-55 of its value..new VW V8 is about $55000..same goes for the Benz,BMW,Nissan etc,etc...it seems that BMW holds its value fairly well though, all other SUV shows the same sliding scale of depreciation.

V10 TDI isn't an option in NA though, right? However on the subject note that there's actually a even more powerful V12 TDI (again not available in NA). If the 10 can tow a 747, then the 12 cylinder can probably pull an A380!
That aside, buy neither, save some more $$$ if necessary and buy a Q7 :D You'll be smiling when you do ;)

It would not be a good idea to attempt towing a 747 with the gasoline-powered V8; it's the V10 TDI they used for that demo and again it's not an option in NA.

Im leaning towards the VW since my bud works as a part manager there, but the reliability of the VW's still haunts me...I owned three VW in my lifetime all were mechanical very good but those small electronic problems (sensors, airbags, windows regulators, etc) was a pain.I know if I ever buy one it must have at least two year left on its warrranty, plus I add extended warranty also.I heard that its braking system is very similar to the Cayenne and its $$$ for parts. The rest of the SUV pricing is similar to other SUV at its price level...oil changes are $150 each time also...

V10 WAS an option in the US in 2004-2005. It was pulled for 2006 because of emissions and came back in 2007. There is no V12, there was W12 gas (same engine as the Phaeton) version sold in Europe and the ME, only 500 made.

If you want to hunt, you can find the diesel in North America. Look in the U.S. since the selection is greater.
Besides, the last thing the English can make reliable is a car!

neither
both have ridiculous reliability and cost an arm and a leg to repair

Not a fan of the VWs, but I wouldn't touch any Land Rover with a 10 foot poll
