Couldn't find a very good review on CNET, however customers reviewed this tv quite well on Amazon.COM (though one idiot wrote a poor review because he felt misled when the picture quality wasn't as good in home as in the store because he wouldn't pay for an HDMI cable).

however, is this deal better then the 42inch westy 1080p set for 1199?

The only review that should count is yours. That is what return policies are for.
I would feel pretty safe getting a Sammy 40" LCD at this price. The only possible concern would be the response time (8ms) if you play games.

8ms served me fine on my 19inch lcd but this is a much larger surface area. Not sure if that is a issue or not. This will be used for my 360 but yes, that is what return policies are for

Please don't compare Sammy to Westy. Because Sammy is name brand Quality and Westy is no name- Take your chance it does come with a 3 year warranty.

Westy is a no name good brand though. From all the reviews I've read of the set it's almost ready to play with the big boys, it just doesn't spend millions on advertising. Also this is a 1080p set vs a 720p set, which may or may not make a difference depending on if I hook up my computer to it, which I probably wont, it's just a thought.

It's a warm deal because it's obsolete technology, imo. This deal is as hot as a Pentium IV processor costs less than a Core2Duo is hot. Know what I mean?
The 40" LCD (with an HD source) is still too small even in a condo environment, assuming you get even 10ft. The picture quality is inferior at 720p but again if you're not using HD it won't matter. But then that begs the question why spend so much money to watch SD when you could have it for even cheaper.
Basically this is old technology at a reduced price - sure it's cheaper than the current 40" LCDs but you need to reevaluate your reasons for purchasing and see whether they are in tune with this particular product.

What other quality Name Brand 40" LCD can you buy today for $999? or less?
This Samsung model is newer than the one Costco is selling today for $1199 (on sale from $1399). ...Sure you can get something better for $1199, or $1399 etc, but for under the magic 1K mark; I think this is a very good deal!

Sure... If your requirement is "to buy a name brand 40inch LCD for under $1000" then this is for you. But (i'd hope) most people know enough to look for certain things in a TV rather than set a random budget and a requirement for brand name and just pick whatever.

I hope you weren't looking for a 1080p with fast-ish response times and good viewing angles cuz the TV you bought doesn't do any of that.
I see no reason to compromise what you're looking for, for price. That's just selling yourself short, or selling yourself out... kinda like a ***** would.
Point is, you go find what you want and if last year's technology does it for you, then good for you. But only a select few people will be willing to spend $1000 on old technology because it's "cheaper"... cuz that "cheaper" strategy will be even cheaper next year.

720p is not obsolete. Why do some fall into the 1080p/120Hz marketing hype?
I'll take the 720p sets that are thrown to the curb...
1080i/720p is just great for Satellite/Cable signals. The only way you need 1080p is with BR/HD-DVD movies and Gaming consoles.
at 40" 1080p is a waste unless your sitting ~ three feet away. Paying twice as much for something you don't need is pointless.

I purchased mine from Future Shop (Price Match). Tuner="ATSC/NTSC/QAM" Unit also has PIP.
I already have dedicated Hi Def Home Theatre Projector. This unit was purchased for a Bedroom, and for distance required we needed 40" 42"
I looked at quite a few units in this size range (and budget) and I feel this is a great deal. Very good picture, handles SD content quite well, lots of inputs, etc and cabinet looks great too! Unless someone can suggest something better; suggest you give it a try!

Back around 30+ years ago Westinghouse was one of biggest corporations in the world that made vacuum tubes to nuclear reactors. They are a lot like General Electric. They are a brand looking to get back into the consumer market. I've been eying the Westing house 52 inch LCD for a while now.

I heard this special on the radio (102.1 in TO) this morning, so I'm sure it exists, so hopefully there is a new link.
btw, I really like this TV. SD actually looks pretty good, HD Rogers is 720p anyways, it comes with 3 HDMI inputs, and at this size sitting more than 5 feet away THERE IS NO PERCEPTIBLE difference between 720p and 1080p
"The independent experts all tend to agree on this point.. 1080p is just about the least important factor in picture quality particularly if you are seated outside the physical boundaries where our human eye can no longer discern the resolution differences.
Disregard any poster who suggests otherwise. They are seeing something other than the true difference between 1080p & 720p when they claim they can tell the difference even on smaller (37"-42") panels beyond 5-6ft. The difference they claim to see is likely to be in the processing of non-native signal, i.e., panels will typically display their native rate better than they can a lesser resolution which the panel then has to scale to match it's own."
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=768167
I'd say disregard the 1080p troll in this thread. I guess I should add that I too am in a condo, watching from ~8 ft away.

For those contemplating the Westinghouse model over this, I checked out the Westinghouse 1080P at BB and, in my opinion, the picture quality was pretty weak. The picture seemed soft and washed out, not as sharp even as any of the 720P's they had on display. Maybe there's some settings you can play with, but for me there wasn't enough of a price difference to justify going with it.
Also, careful with the warranty. The BB I was at said there was no authorized service provider, so you'd need to send it in to California for repairs (oh, but they sell a service plan of course!) So I called Westinghouse and asked: sure enough, I was told the only official service center is Best Buy! Which of course, makes no sense. Anyways, if you're going Westy, get the one at Dell with the added 3rd party warranty at least. Otherwise, check out the 4285P at Costco.

I've pointed out the importance of not basing your decision on purchasing on price and brand name alone, and that you should do the research to find out what you need in a TV and whether this particular TV meets those needs.
If it doesn't meet your needs, then whether the TV is under $999 is irrelevant, much like the rest of your posts.
Don't take your anger out on me just cuz you bought the wrong TV thinking this does 1080p when it's only capable of 720p.

Further LG has hrrible customer service. The Globe had an article about 6 monthes with interviews many irate LG TV owners that the company was complewtely inresponsive to defects, etc. I wouldn't go near LG after reasding that.

Though Westinghouse Digital licenses its name from CBS and is incorporated in California, there has been some controversy as to who actually owns the company. I dunno how monster cables and whether they are crap are relevant in this thread. Stop making off topic / useless posts please. How are you adding any value to this thread anyway?
I've pointed out the importance of not basing your decision on purchasing on price and brand name alone, and that you should do the research to find out what you need in a TV and whether this particular TV meets those needs.
If it doesn't meet your needs, then whether the TV is under $999 is irrelevant, much like the rest of your posts.
Don't take your anger out on me just cuz you bought the wrong TV thinking this does 1080p when it's only capable of 720p.
Sounds to me like YOU are the one not satisifed with your Samsung TV purchase (from your posts)
Quote "yeah 2001AV doesn't like to honour their refund/exchange/PM policies. i have the 4061 and on the 29th day I wanted to upgrade to the 4661. not only will they not price match BB's price on the 4661 (not even 110% PM, just 100% they wouldn't do), they wouldn't allow me to exchange the TV unless i pay 15% restocking fee."
Your 4061 has same 8MS response time as this one, same 178 viewing angle, and 1080P spec that is pretty much useless at this 40" size! (Yes it has better Contrast /Brightness; but I am content with my purchase, and sounds to me like you are not!)
I am guessing you paid more than $979 for yours?
I at least bought mine from Future Shop; where I would have no problem returning it for credit or exchange. (if you could point out a better deal for us all!)
Your 4061 is on sale today at FS for $1499, almost $600 more (with tax) than I paid for my TV
Personally I would rather keep the extra $600!
When I upgrade my Living Room HD set I will go with 46 or 52 " unit and will get 1080P + BR, but do not consider it good value for return on unit this small.

Just picked up one today. Its better than waiting in line boxing day to buy a tv@999. Its not that great on standard def but luckily it comes with 12-months of HD.
FYI - the sale ended today

How does the 12-months of HD work? My parents picked up this TV but have no clue how to get the 12 months of HD and what catch it has. I am not home to help them right now. Thanks.

<remainder of useless post omitted>
The only thing you've demonstrated in this thread is your need to get a life as you actually spent YOUR time digging up my posts to copy and paste into this thread which is of no relevance or value.
Regardless of what I said in the past in other threads, it doesn't invalidate what I said in this thread about how a purchase of this size should be done with a little more care and insight than a random requirement for a "brand name TV under $1000".
I have no regrets about my 4061. I bought for 80% off the going rate at FS/BB/etc. If you take 80% off the current $1499 at futureshop, that's 1199 which is only $200 more than what you paid.
Except you bought leftover stock, a discontinued model, and you bought it thinking it would do 1080p when it doesn't. Your research skills suck even more than your posting skills.

it seems i still got the best deal on this tv,
back when dolmolin audiotronics had this tv for $998, i went to futureshop to price match it and got this set for $968.
$1103 taxes included. its now in my bedroom and have been for the past few months, havent had any problems yet. got my ps3 plugged into it and it looks great, contrast looks fine, blacks r black enough for me and now i also have starchoice and the hd looks great. on the forums ppl complain about screen tearing and audio drop outs but i have never experienced tearing, i have noticed audio drop outs but not sure if its the starchoice reciever or the tv because my ps3 works perfect.
thanks rfd!!!

LOL anyone who says that LG is better than Sammy when it comes to TVs need to get their facts straight. Its like saying a turtle will outrun a dog in a race. There is a reason why Samsung eats up 1/3+ of the LCD market share.
You have to compare specs to specs...The specs on that Samsung are not as good as the LG set the other person commented on...I don't own an LG but I own a Samsung LCD that has been in for repair twice in 15 months. While my set was out on repair for the second time I starting looking for a new set and discovered a ton of Samsung refurbished sets for sale online and at retailers. How good are Samsung?

Your parents would have gotten a rogers package along with the TV. It contains basically a 8x14 paper "Rogers HDTV activation Guide". You just need to call them with the activation number and have them deliver the hd reciever. You'll get 12-month subscription as well - after that you'll have to pay.
I think the catch is you'll get caught into HD and can't return to standard def. ;)

thanks, had my parents called and apparent 6 month free PVR is the other option.

ur not even posting a better deal...$200 more for a 4061 which is also bottom of the line 1080P line.
there is NO newer 720P version of the 4042, BUT there is a lot newer models then the 4061.
post your reciept for PROOF @ $1199.
otherwise the price u posted - $1199 for tv is the plus the dvd recorder ($200 +1200 = $1400) which u r also trying to get rid of to cover the $, thats likely how ur getting the tv price.
if u want to look at like that then even my old 4041 was only $950 w/all of the extras i got last Nov. ($1799 sale - $570 HTIB - $180 dvd player - $100 free GC)
And the only reason u wanted to exchange it for the 4661 was because u must of realised that 1080P was not really needed on such a small tv. LOL
No man. I wanted the 4661 because I realized with HD, you can afford to go even bigger even in a small space. I was originally very disappointed with the 4061 cuz the SD picture was horrendous at ~10ft distance. But once I went HD, I realized I can go even bigger - maybe even 50" even with only 10ft cuz the picture was that much sharper.
anyway back to the point. the 4061 is selling for $1299 starting tomorrow at BB. it's not quite 80% off of the 1499 price but it's close @ 85%. but don't forget you also save the 1% GST now.
either way, 75% off discontinued / outdated technology based on its sticker price and brand name sound pretty ridiculous. The 4061 is still current regardless of what you say. but either way, buy whatever suits your needs. the price and brand name should come second to what you need a tv for - is all that i'm saying.

It is important when making broad statements to back them up with facts.
(Except you bought leftover stock,)
Nope My TV was manufactured Oct 2007
(a discontinued model)
Nope still current
(you bought it thinking it would do 1080p when it doesn't)
Neither myself, nor the original poster ever claimed this was a 1080P set.
The only time I even used the term was when I challenged you to find a 1080P replacement for the same price
(Your research skills suck even more than your posting skills).
It is important to check out the credibility of the source!
I thought at first you might be just some guy that just bought his first HD set and was now a “qualified” expert!; .By checking some of your recent posts I pretty much confirmed it!
(I wanted the 4661 because I realized with HD, you can afford to go even bigger even in a small space. I was originally very disappointed with the 4061 cuz the SD picture was horrendous at ~10ft distance … / The 40" LCD (with an HD source) is still too small even in a condo environment)
I f you had done some research before hand; you would have known what size and type of TV was right for your space and requirements; and maybe would have known that the 4061 actually has some problems scaling up SD signals (Maybe your were not really sure what you were going to use your TV for?)
Quote (post your receipt for PROOF @ $1199.
Have not seen your receipt yet! And you have not convinced me that it would be worthwhile for me to spend an extra 32% to upgrade to your model.
I have 4 Hi Def Satellite box’s ..none 1080P!
This is not my primary TV. We never play Xbox or PS3 in bed!
My Viewing distance is 12'. I had a budget; and I knew exactly what I was looking for.
Some people believe that buying slightly behind the bleeding edge results in excellent value, with significant savings!.
Manufacturers make different units; at different price points; because no one item will please everybody.
"Red Flag Deals" exists because people are looking for a deal at a price point that will convince them to pull out the wallet! I am guessing you bought your bottom of the line 1080P set based on budget, otherwise you would have bought a larger; top of the of the line set!
The best post in this thread is
"The only review that should count is yours. That is what return policies are for."

i am a little sick of repeating myself so this is my last post in this thread. the rest of your flames bear no relevance to the following so i will disengage from your senseless postings...
regardless of what you think of me, or what i know about TVs or anything for that matter, it doesn't change the fact that people should make a purchase based on their needs, first and foremost, instead of a requirement for a random brand name at a particular price point.
this is because, as you said, manufacturers set different price points for different products because people have different elasticities of demand. those who purchase based on price and brand name alone, often aren't getting their money's worth.
if this TV does what you want, and the price fits your budget - then good for you. but from your posts, it doesn't do what you wanted since u were looking for 1080p but later attempted to cover ur tracks to say you didn't want 1080p...
i have friends who have this tv and are very happy with it. at no point am i questioning the quality of this particular tv. that is all.
