Who quoted you that price. I can tell you that I bought (but got cost price) for a set of Michelins Pilot Alpine (better than x-ice) for $145 each. The stealies were $40 each. You do the math.

Sounds high. www.tirerack.com is quoting US$977 shipped to your door including tax and duty for Bridgestone WS-60 mounted on alloy wheels. No steelies left.
BTW Michelin Pilot Alpins are not "better" than X-Ice's...they are performance winters meaning they have a higher speed rating and will likely be better on dry roads and on the highway. In real snow and ice X-Ices will own Alpins. I have them on my BMW X3 and g/f's Mazda 3 and they are amazing.

what do you mean by "no steelies" left?
Can I use the original rims for the x-ice?

you could, but why would you want to damage your rims (i.e. aluminum) and expose them to the harshness of winter? also i imagine it would be easier to swap mounted tires vs removing and replacing them off of the rim each season.

I meant Tire Rack has run out of steel wheels for the season in the 15 inch size.
Sure you can use your original rims, but it's not good for tires to be taken off and put back on a set of rims repeatedly (i.e. twice a year). Wears out the tire bead (the inner edge of the tire that sits against the rim).
Also, if you get the tires on a separate set of rims (steel or alloy) you can change them over yourself with a jack and a wrench every spring and fall. Saves you going to a tire shop.

look through kijji or craigs list and get some at half or less the price of new. There are tons of them for sale right now. I sold a set of Ice X 205 60 r15 on steel wheels, used one part of a winter, for $450 two weeks ago on craigs list (also had it up in Kijji)
And I also heard that there are no more steel wheels. If the store runs out, then it will get no more. The manufacturing run on steel wheels is over for this year.

Kal Tire sells Michelin X-ice tires for about $150 each, steelie rims for about $50-$100 each, mounting & balancing for about $40 each, price includes installation onto your car.

A Civic is hardly what I'd call a "hot new car". And really who cares what you look like in winter, provided you're safe[r]? There's always wheel covers too, you know...

or you can always use a dedicated set of alloys for winters
it doesn't matter ... when you realize you go/stop/turn normally and others are doing much slower (to achieve the same safety margin) you know you have made the right decision

I just bought a set for my 08 Civic and Sienna! Got a pretty good deal at Active Green and Ross. Paid about 750 all in after the 100 dollar rebate with 4 rims for my civic and 960 for my Sienna. Stock is low all over as it's the end of the season.

Honda steelies come with honda H center caps. Otherwise honda is really charging you a lot for a similar product.
Dealerships are stealerships, thats common knowledge around here right?
btw to those saying about driving with steelies in the winter. It usually means you have rims worth giving a f*ck about for the summer. That or you actually see the benefit of winter tires

Nah, i mean you'll look more embarrased if you don't have winter tires with your non-steelies when you are in a ditch.
Besides with steelies you have the police car look ;)

Steel wheels. The ones where you put hubcaps on them.

What makes the Pilot Alpines a better tire, the fact that its more expensive??
I have used both tires and the X-ICE are much better then the Pilots. The Pilots have a higher speed rating (performance tire), as a result they need to sacrifice compound grip for a compound that will be able to cope with higher speeds.
Two of my vehicles require "performance tires" but is anyone really going to be going over 99MPH in the winter? So there's really no point of installing so called "performance" winter tires.
