so i got a ticket for not updating my plate's sticker a while back, i took it to court and i forgot to show up on the court date... today i got a letter saying i owe 120 bux
here's the question: they butchered my name in the letter and they got my license plate wrong
do i still have to pay? could i just say there's no one by this name living here and there's no car here with that license plate #?

It doesn't matter how the letter was addressed, all that's important is the ticket. You chose to fight it, you set a trial date, and you failed to defend. You're found guilty in default. The $120 is for THAT ticket, not for the letter they had to send to you.
Now that said, you do have the option of seeking to re-open the case if you still want to fight it. But IMO and from what little you've told us, it doesnt' even sound like you have a defense.

Can we ban the 'I got a ticket, what loopholes are there to get out of it?' threads already?

well, only if you didn't not miss that court date .. you might have a chance on getting away with it ...
now that you missed your court date and had additional penalties on top on the ticket ... you chances of getting away with this is very slim.

Why?? Lots of tickets aren't justified. And fighting a ticket isn't trying to find a loophole -- it's a process put in place to defend yourself when you've been wrongly given a ticket or if there are extenuating circumstances. What's wrong with asking about that?
But in this case, OP, I think you're screwed to put it mildly. You had a court date and you failed to show. That's your fault and that's why you have to pay.
