Hey Guys,

I got a parking ticket in New York city for stopping for 10 min. in a no stopping zone....anyways....wrote a sobbing story online to The City of New York Finance and just got a letter in the mail saying that they will not reduce the fine of $115.

I don't think it is fair and I don't want to pay....now my question:

Will Toronto make me pay next time I got renew my sticker?

Will I get arrested or be forced to pay when I cross the border (not in the car that I got the ticket with)?

Is my plate number the only thing that will set the alarm off when I cross the border?

What is stopping me from getting new plates and going over to NYC again with my car?

Thanks guys.

I doubt you'll have any trouble.

But then again... (http://gothamist.com/2007/09/25/lesson_of_the_d.php)

I fail to see why it is NOT "fair"?!?!

You clearly broke the law and now claim its not fair? Please explain as I am not understanding your argument.

As for the consequences; it depends. NY and ON are connected so any ticket you get in NY will show up here in MTO. That is for the speeding tickets. Considering cops hand out parking tickets in NYC as well, you may have an issue here.

Just be happy you got a ticket and didn't get your car towed away.

My Story,

I stopped on a road to see what the hotel was charging for parking and my girlfriend was in the car....the parking guy saw the car running and someone inside and still wrote a ticket, I ran back and explained and he continued to write the ticket and act like he didnt understand english....you telling me that is fair?

Hate to break it to you, but you got a legitimate ticket. It might suck, but fair is all about perspective. I hate parking commsionaires as much as the next guy, but you got busted.

I would recommend just paying the ticket. Why stress yourself when you plan your next visit over a measly $115?

I worked in the Ontario government with the condition of their IT systems that ticket will never get back to you. Just pay for parking the next time you are in NY.

My question are...
1. Why didn't you girlfriend run into to fine out the cost of parking ($25-40 daytime)?
2. Why didn't she move the car when the parking officer came by to write the ticket?

You should know better...parking in NYC is expensive there are no cheap places unless you can find street parking (like every other New Yorker).

Pay for it if you plan on taking the same car down to NYC. As they will tow your car ($300) and impound it for unpaid parking tickets. If you still do not choose to pay for the fine, expect a piece of mail for the outstanding fine with an additional late charge.

New York state has access to Ontario's DL system and can track down the owner of the vehicle. The last thing you need is another trip accross the border and NY Trooper or local cops do a quick check on your car and see that you have an outstanding ticket. Guess what happens?
They will pull you over and possibly take you in to settle the fine.

The US take unpaid tickets more seriously then the parking authorities do here in Canada.
Pay the ticket and move on.

The US have gotten smarter over the last 5 years.
Ontario and bordering US states have agreements to share DL and Plate information to go after speeders and parking infractions.

I have friends who have gotten parking and speeding tickets in New York. Both avoided paying, both got request for payments and a collection notice.

The speeder also got a 30-day notice to pay or get receive a suspended license from Ontario months later and the ticket appreared on his Driver's abstract (insurance went up).

The parker, returned to NYC and got the vehicle towed while parked legally.
Had to pay the original ticket + late fee/interest + impound and towing fee.

You have to pay. For one, you broke the law, so getting a ticket is very fair. Second, this happened to a friend of mine and some time later they found her in Canada, found her address and phone and gave her to a collection agency, ruining her credit if she didn't pay. So just pay quickly and get it done with, sinc e you will have to eventually anyway.

THanks guys....but...if I do not take my car to NYC again or if I change my plates....how will they ever know?

How can they come after me in Ontario for a parking ticket?

I just want to know if they will come after me in Ontario or if the border guys will know if I cross with a different car just by my name and address?

This is about principle...I have the money to pay, just dont feel it is right to pay $115 for parking for 5 minutes with the car running.

I had to run out and ask because my g/f was scared of the area....and my g/f does not know how to drive stick so she could not move the car or drive the car around the block.

For living without fear of the ticket creeping back to you in the future, $115 is cheap.

Suck it up, at least the CDN $ is high now. I did when the CDN$ was low (much painful since I was a student then), and now I have no issues with NYPD if ever they see my DL or plates.

Also note, US collection agencies are ruthless and love calling you...

They will have your name in the system. It does not matter if you have a new car they will get you.

Big deal, 115 is nothing. My idiot friend (no longer a friend now) got himself a $190 ticket for parking near a loading zone by Times Square because he didn't want to pay for a parking spot. This was 4 years ago, and we had a company rental and thought we could escape the ticket, but sure enough it came back to him via the rental company 6 months later. We paid it off, it was too much of a hassle to head back to NYC to dispute it.

In NYC, it doesn't matter if you are "Standing"... so you can throw principle out the door here since you parked or were standing in a area marked where you could do neither.

NYC parking authorities take infractions seriously over there to prevent traffic jams. Even if you are standing in a "No Standing" area for 2 minutes...you will get a ticket if the traffic cop is around.
Just be thankful that your gf was in the car or it would have been towed.

My advice, pay the ticket and remember that there is no cheap parking in NYC.

They know you are out of state and will get your information and send the amount to a collection agency here in Canada to go after you.
So will it be worth $115 to get a blip on your credit record?

Okay, I gotcha. The "principle" of beating a legitimate (if admittedly expensive) ticket is more important than the inconvenience of changing your license plates and avoiding New York for the rest of your life.

Almost as if you weren't allowed to stop there at all.

another scenario:

what if you're using a rental from ontario and get a parking ticket? would they still come after you? i imagine they'd go after the car rental company and the car rental company would have to go after you.

How about if you got a parking ticket with the car that has New Hempshire Temporary plate which expires in couple of days? (Bought a new Subaru from NH dealer)

Do you get in trouble if you don't pay this?

We aren't in the 70's no more... todays computer age, everything leaves a trail. Your temporary plate is attached to you name (if you are the registered owner) and the parking authoritity will eventually track you down for payment.
