I have bought different types that leave streaks and blotches, and am not quite happy with them. What are the best ones out there from wal-mart or crappy tire that are really good, and not too expensive?

I know.....cheap and good in the same context :D

+1, I've used cheap no-names in the past and switched to Rain-X. Visible difference!

Where can I get this, does wal-mart carry it?

Bought my RainX fluid at Canadian Tire. I'm not sure if Wal Mart carries it. Definitely the best washer fluid I've used.

I buy the Rain-X windshield washer (yellow liquid, 4L) from Canadian Tire.

It is not cheap, but like others I have used it for years. It causes any water to bead and run off the windshield. At highway speeds any falling rain runs off the windshield without wipers.

(Prior to the windshield washer product I had applied Rain-X from the little bottle, but each application would only last a few months.)

Interesting, I may have to try the RainX...I've been pretty happy with the applied product, but if you get the same effect from the fluid without having to clean and reapply, that sounds like a win.

I find any cheap fluid works fine with the RainX treatment applied, though.

+Billion for RainX Windshield Washer Fluid.

Though the stuff rarely goes on sale, stock up on the cases if it does, I always do!

Spraying this stuff makes the snow around your windshield yellow, like someone peed on it :D

Rain-X is great stuff, I used to use it since before it even came combined with washer fluid...

However these days I use VisionBlade glass treatment and then use any el-cheapo washer fluid I can find and it's just fine. I'd rather pay $4 for four 4L bottles of winshield antifreeze than $4 for one bottle ;) Plus VisionBlade is better overall, it just takes time to apply it of course...

Anyway if the OP has tried various brands and types and they are still getting streaking and poor performance it's likely there is something to do with their wiper system and not the fluid. Either the wiper blades are worn/old or the arms/springs are worn.

Winter washer fluid is mainly just alcohol regardless of what type you buy. Yes there are some with Rain-X or Teflon additives but mainly they are just alcohol. If you're getting streaking with several types (of essentially the same thing) then there's probably a problem that's not related to the fluid ;)

Won't buy Vision Blade for that reason.
But will try Rain-X. Thanks for the info.

Could it be that your windshield wipers need changing and not your windshield washer fluid brand?

Always a good idea to change your wipers on a regular basis too!

Yup, Rain-X. I used to use the small bottle and applied manually, but got tired of doing that. Last winter I had to get some more washer fluid and the only ones left was the Rain-X. I won't go back.

If you ever take a road trip to the US. You can get a big jug at Walmart for like $2. I was there last month and bought a couple of jugs. I'll be heading down in a couple of months and will buy more.

Definitely RainX. Hands down the best around.

Used to use that cheap Walmart crap and got tired of it as even their -45 degree fluid would freeze to my window. Rainx isn't cheap, but very much worth it!

The cashier wouldn't let me buy 4 loose bottles @ the sale price, so I had to go back and dig an actual case of 4 from under the loose bottle display.

If it froze..you should have taken it back...probably the mix was not right. I used the cheap stuff from Wally world -40C stuff in Wpg of all places for years and it never froze unless I'm on the highway with -60C windchill..even then, a couple swipes of the blades and it would evaporate off the glass anyways.

Rain-X de-icer says it's only effective to -25F. Does it freeze after that? That would not be good.

I agree with the notion that the windshield can be cleaned just as nicely without RainX and a good pair of wipers. I use whatever fluid on sale with my Silblades, and I've never had problems with streaking or parts where it was still dirty...

For the Rain-X washer fluid is it necessary to apply the Rain-X water beading application first?

also claybar ur windshield! that helps it wipe/stay clean!

Any newbie guides out there on how to do this? What exactly does the claybar do?

edit: as an aside in case people were wondering why the cheap stuff has gone up in price this year (used to be .99c on sale, now its $2 for a jug) is because there is a shortage of methanol. Used to be $309 per metric tonne has now gone up to $832.

Basically the ratings are for when it's in the bottle. When it says good to -45C like the el-cheapo ones, it just means the fluid won't freeze in your washer resivoir and damage the motor.

Once it's sprayed onto your windshield it will freeze up. Most regular washer fluids are an Alcohol/Water mix, so when you are driving, the alcohol evaporates leaving the water which inturn is what freezes on your windshield.

That's why all of them tell you to have the windshield as warm as possible. In addition for best de-icing (with de-icing washer fluid), you should be spraying it at low speeds to prevent fast evaporation.
