I am not a lawyer.
You may show up to your friend's court appearance on behalf of him. (Besides, it's not like they look for I.D., so it may be possible for them to assume that you are him.)
First speak to the secretary in the court room to sign in.
When speaking to the secretary, refer to your friend as your client. "My client is not available to attend and is looking for an adjournment due to health reasons". You will then get a rescheduled court date.
Remember this though,
-If your lucky, the officer may not show up, and if your representing "your client" then the case will get thrown out. Just make sure to stay.
-Hear the offer of the defense. It may be worth it to take what the defense is offering versus the initial charge. It's okay to represent your "client" and make decisions for them. You can even hear the offer first, leave the courtroom and make a call to your friend before pleading.
-If the officer is there, and you still want to arrange for another court date, you may ask for adjournment. Note that you will be waving your 11b charter right.
-If it's not too late, research the 11b Charter argument.
Thank you for fighting the ticket.

If you are not a lawyer, be sure to say you are you're client's 'agent'. You don't want to be misrepresenting yourself as a lawyer and end up geting charged. But yes, anybody can act as an agent in Provincial Offenses Court and if it's a first appearance you'll have no problem getting an adjournment.

thanks guys ur replies r really helpful
11b means charter of right but does it also include right of getting disclosure i mean if he gets another court date he can't request for disclosure to prepare for his case ?

you must make a written request for disclosure and prove so using registered mail with signature option.
Request is often times quite basic and may be given to you at your court date if you have made a request. You would be allowed another date to review it theoretically but most of the time disclosure isn't much.
If you attend the court date, act as an agent for your friend. There is no problem getting another court date. First time its really not a problem. Second time better be a VERY valid excuse. If you really want to earn some brownie points have your friend write a basic signed letter that states.
To Whom It May Concern
Date
Offense Number
Trial Date
I John Doe am unable to appear in court to answer to the charge blah blah blah of the highway traffic act. I have appointed oppositeset to communicate this letter to the court.
I am willing to accept any other date the court can provide me. I understand that a reminder may not be mailed and will be in communication with my agent John Doe.
Signed

Both me and my friend showed up in the court and the cop was there still my friend decided not to plead guilty to his charge of doing 72 in the 50 zone ,,, he is supposed to pay $75 instead of $110 ... do u think tht his points will be cut too or this will be considered a minor ticket ? whats the procedure to check if his points r not deducted and his insurance won't go high ?!?

once we went to the court and the cop was there, my friend said i want to plead not guilty but after listening to the the cop he said i need some time to prepare for the case since he hadnt requested for disclosure but JP said no u should've asked for it earlier and found him guilty.
