Is it worth it to buy a 2003 VW jetta TDI with 98000miles on it from the states? its relatively cheap, 6000-7000 it seems from my research

I am guessing if i am doing that, i would have no warranty eh? Also is it even possible to convert my miles speedometer to a km speedometer if i import it from the states?

once again many thanks to valuable RFDers advice

is it worth it? well, how much is the same car here? and yeah im sure a shop can to the conversion. correct me if im wrong but it is pretty much required by law, mph > kph, day running lights, etc.

ps: im sure the car is already out of warranty due to mileage.

The car should already have DRL's. Make sure it was well maintained. Find out what oil was used. Timing belt is due at 100k miles so check if that was done, if not, budget ~$500 and find somebody who knows how to work on a TDI.

DRLs are required while the speedo doesn't matter as all cars have it in mph and km.

If it's a sedan, it's made in Mexico.

157,000 kilometers in about than 4 years sounds like a lot to me. Was it a taxi?

Not all. Usually the first year of a model change is out of Germany. You can tell by the VIN. if it starts with W it's german, mexico will be 3, and Brazil will be 9

People who buy TDI's are more likely to drive a lot. There are a lot of drivers that do stuff like courier work that average 50-80k kms per year.

LOL at using a Jetta for a TAXI. Too small and way too many electrical problems to even run the fare sign.

Funny? I have seen at least one here in Ottawa as well as a Nissan or two.

i think ppl in the states drive more than we do. here, i think on avg ppl drive 20000-25000km/yr but down there, on average is 20000-25000miles/year

i once bought something from a seller in states. i asked to meet him half way so i sed how about niagara falls, canada (i wasnt sure how far away he was). he sed sure. i asked him how long he drove he sed 3hrs and that is wasn't that far and faster than he thought... damn.. and i thought taking 1hr to get there was long...

I drive 35-40K km per year and do not use the car for business.

jetta TDI or golf TDI are so rare to come by even if I am willing to get a 2002 or 2003, some people have said the among of money i save on gas will probaly not even make a different with the extra money i have to take out for the TDI c ar or i could just find a good bargain for a used 2002-2003 used jetta for about 5000 and usually they comes with DRL too, would that be a better idea? buy a used jetta for 5000

Also one more thing, i check with some used car dealership in the states. They cannot seem to be able to produce maintenance record of the jetta that i am looking at and claim that the car runs great or it was previously certified by VW

I know with my budget i cannot be asking for much but what is the best way not to buy a lemon? Any tips and hints on how to buy a used car from the states?

When I was buying my car 8 months ago I was seriously considering a TDI Golf or Jetta. The Jetta I was looking at was 10.5K asking. It was in good condition and had 160K on it... 2000 model year. I offered an even 10, but was beat out by sum1 who matched the price.

Hearing about this Jetta that's 3 years newer, less mileage, and that's cheaper by thousands makes me suspicious. Then again, I guess that's how cheap American prices are for cars.

Plus, I think you were overpaying for it. ;)

My buddy had bought 2000 TDI Jetta for $10gz 3 yrs ago.
