The water flows maybe 8 feet to the master drain. Do I really need a trap? I'm trying to save as much ceiling high as possible for my basement.
The tub is on the main floor, but in the basement we have a 3 piece bathroom being built that is right under it.

Yes, Ontario Plumbing Code mandates the use of a trap for every fixture. The trap has to be within 1200 mm of the fixture drain opening (in this case, the bathtub drain).
Is the bathtub in question on the main floor or in the basement?
The trap from the bathtub above should sit between the floor joists and not protrude down below the bottom of the joists.
If you're talking about the bathtub in the basement, you'll either need to jack-hammer out concrete to install the trap and drain, or raise up the bathtub on a platform if it's the drop in type so the trap can be installed without making a mess of the floor.

The bathtub is on the main floor, but the plumbing was run under the joists. (Thats how we bought the house) As of now we dont have a trap for it, and it works fine. Do you really get that much sewer gas from it? I know you seem to get a lot more when you have a toilet removed since thats where your crap does go.

yes, there's a lot of gas that comes from the sewer pipe, mostly methane gas which is explosive. I'd get a trap in there asap

wow, I have never heard of a house with a shower/bath on the main floor, obviously unless its a bungalow... if yours is a 2 storey house, may I ask why you would want to do that? Seems like a unique idea. :)

Oh, the house is a Triplex. Apartment on each floor. Upper, main, and lower. All are 2 bedrooms, with bath and kitchens, living room and a dining room. :cheesygri
i guess its better to be safe than sorry. I better get a trap in.
