$400 a good price for this monitor. However, a warning: This is not the Ultrasharp. The Ultrasharp's panel is fantastic. This one's panel isn't so good. But if you want the real estate and don't care about the quality of your image, then it's a good price.

n810 is not worth it. both are exactly the same in every way except:

n800 has more storage capacity (2 expandable slots instead of just 1)
n810 has smaller footprint
n810 has a built in keyboard that has gotten really bad reviews... bluetooth keyboard all the way!
n810 has built in gps which doesn't use the Sirfstar III chipset so it's kind of weak... any serious gps work should be using an external gps anyway.

n800 is 199 compared to n810 at 400+

The n800 runs a flavor of Linux (maemo linux), you can install any debian package if I remember correctly so you can do much more than just surf the internet.

I haven't received mine yet but I plan to install a small LAMP installaion with Vim and do some web development on the go. Not sure how well that will turn out.

Compared to ipod touch, it's good because the platform is open source and the resolution is much higher. The browser (Opera) supports flash 9 unlike safari on the ipod touch.
You'll be set back another $100 or so if you want to add 16GB storage to the n800 though. (at around $50 per 8gb which is about the cheapest you can get nowadays)

It supports sync on green and a steal at this price. I called in and threated to return it but the customer return specialist adjusted the price for me.
Regarding the cheap tn panal there is a little light leakage but image quality is great highly recommend it.

TN panels are okay for average daily uses (e.g. watching movies, word processing, browsing internet and etc..). But there are differences between TN and SPVA (used in 2407 and other UltraSharp lines) panels when it comes to image quality. If you want something for image editing and other tasks that need accurate"er" color representation, then stay away from TN panels. I have a 2407WFP myself and have also seen TN in action, I would rather spend more to get higher quality panels.

I just couldn't pass up on a tablet PC/media player/GPS (EDIT: GPS-capable) for 200 bucks. I was looking at the EEE but its twice the cost and I just don't think I'll use it enough to justify twice the cost. And after reading that the N810 has made a lot of changes for the worse the N800 should still hold decent value if I decide I don't use it enough.

I was saving money for Rock Band. Guess I'm not now (probably won't be able to find it for a month or two anyways since I didn't preorder).

it's a great tablet. the intuos3 is a lot better than the graphire - more sensitivity and the pen feels a lot better. the price is really good on it - normally sells for around $250-300.

4x6 is the smallest size of the bunch, it goes up to 6x8 and i think 9x12 as well. depends what size she wants.

Is the WACOM 4x6 tablet any good?

My sister has a WACOM tablet on her xmas list, but I don't know anything about tablets. I know she doesn't want one that's too small. What's the average size for these?

Just ordered the Nokia N800. The only really tempting thing about the N810 is that it has a slightly better screen for outdoor viewing. But for potential GPS use, I think using an external bluetooth GPS receiver on the N800 has major advantages.

You may not be aware of it but the Nokia Internet Tablets can now run (many) Palm OS applications. This is a huge advance in usefulness since mainstream applications were lacking in the Nokias. http://forum.brighthand.com/showthread.php?t=250091

Strange, I thought this was explained pretty well by jonnnny:

n810 is not worth it. both are exactly the same in every way except:

n800 has more storage capacity (2 expandable slots instead of just 1)
n810 has smaller footprint
n810 has a built in keyboard that has gotten really bad reviews... bluetooth keyboard all the way!
n810 has built in gps which doesn't use the Sirfstar III chipset so it's kind of weak... any serious gps work should be using an external gps anyway.

n800 is 199 compared to n810 at 400+

N800 all the way for me. More Storage > Mini keyboard. Also, $200 is a heck of a lot better then $400. At $400 I'd just buy an EEE.

N800 with Linux: turn on, click Browse button, start browsing regular web (like RedFlagDeals). Want an extra software app? Open Application Manager, click Browse Applications, pick one from the online list (user-editable application server list), click Install, downloads and installs.

PDA: buy accessories (more $), open browser (wait, wait, wait ...), squint at tiny screen, curse lack of Flash support. Search many web sites for extra apps you need: all "trial" versions, $50 to purchase.

I see it's already out of stock at Dell, but they're still taking orders: 5-7 days to ship.

wow great price @ the n800 i wish they had this deal before when i was buying my n770 .

the n800 just got a new software update that is compatible with the n810 if i understand correctly.

i currently use my n770 to remote to my computer/ stream Youtube videos as well as some skype/ventrilo. the n800 has way more functions as well as able to watch youtube/flv's with no troubles after firmware update.

also with the deals they have for Sd cards its a quick on the go mobile device that can have up to 16 gigs of storage , link it with a bluetooth keyboard and is a great laptop replacement for college/uni or just browsing @ home.

It does have a built in e-mail client and you can also install a 3rd party one if you wish. The built in browser is kind of weak but you can install Opera which has full support for most everything including flash, javascript (ajax), https etc. It's Opera so it can do most things desktop Opera can do.

Video (divx etc.) and audio plays just fine, you just need to install the proper program and codecs.

The n800 comes with Internet Tablet OS 2007 which runs the processor underclocked at 330mhz and plays Youtube a little choppy. You can update the firmware to OS 2008 which will "unlock" the processor to 400mhz and everything will work great :)

The n810 is listed as a faster processor because it comes with OS2008 preinstalled -- it's actually the exact same CPU in both n800 and n810.

Keep in mind though, a lot of software written for OS 2007 hasn't been ported to OS 2008 yet.

Yes, I'm also curious to what GPS map software is available for this unit (N800), do you have to do special modifications to the unit to get map software on it?

It's a program called Maemo Mapper - it's currently the most popular app download, and it has been updated for OS2008. Just the usual one-click download and install process.

You can specify your map source from a list of alternatives (with the amusing caution that you should verify that you have the legal right to use these sources - nod nod, wink wink). I'm using Google Maps and Google Earth sat images. Seeing the Google sat images on this beautiful big high-res screen is awesome. It auto-fetches from the internet when you are logged on, and auto-caches to your local storage.

Surprising the heck out of me, it can do street routing using some sort of built-in online service, and it seems quite good. I haven't explored the details of where this service is coming from yet, but it does as good a job as my Mio C310 on a few addresses I tried.

It should work with any Bluetooth GPS - there are lots available, but watch for a bargain price.

Thanks. Is it easy/free to update to OS 2008?

Yes, but:
- OS2008 for the N800 won't be officially released for about 2 weeks, so the advice is to wait for it to ensure best stability
- The version you can currently download is the N800 release candidate based on the N810 version which has already shipped. Users seem pleased with it - few problems aside from some apps that need an update from OS2007
- Installing OS2008 will wipe your apps list, so you'll have to re-install all your add-ons, another reason why you might want to wait a few weeks for the official release

It's a standard lithium ion battery, easily replaceable (hear that Apple? see the godawful battery access procedure for the iPod Touch posted on CNET today). Lasts about 4 hours on a charge if actively using the screen at high brightness and the WiFi connection.

Apparently it works with most Bluetooth keyboards - I haven't got one to try.

N800 also has Wayfinder Navigator mapping software included in the OS2008 install (and free download for maps). No voice prompts, that's extra cost.

I'd suggest installing OS2008beta before you spend any time loading apps into OS2007. The final release will be available within a couple of weeks and it will be an easier migration from 2008beta than from 2007, since most of the 2007 apps can't be used in 2008. And if you start with 2008beta, it will re-install your apps for you when you upgrade the firmware (eg. to the final release).

I borrowed one briefly to test from a friend with a PDA, don't even know what brand it is.

Here's one with a SiRFStar III chipset for about $70, for example: http://www.gpscentral.ca/products/usglobalsat/bt359w.htm

1) Is there any application for typing notes and opening powerpoints? I want something small to take note during lectures.

Typing notes, sure: there's various notepad and WP apps for the N800. But opening Powerpoints is trickier - even the PP Windows Mobile version can't handle most desktop ppts. If you want to carry it around to look at for reference, you'd be better off to PDF it and open it with the PDF viewer.

There's a radio ad running right now for Telus that suggests that you could edit your Powerpoint presentation on your Windows Mobile phone right after you come out of an offsite meeting. Hah! I'd love to see the marketing moron that wrote that ad actually try it. :cheesygri

2) Does it work with places where you need to download something to check for virus and stuff before you can connect like the wifi system at UoT?

Don't know about UoT's stuff, but it can handle most web apps that run in Opera or Mozilla (Firefox).

3) When will Dell charge my credit card? When I order or when they ship?

In the past they've charged me when they ship.

2) Does it work with places where you need to download something to check for virus and stuff before you can connect like the wifi system at UoT?I'd say that's doubtful. It depends what you mean "download something". If it is some kind of trust-agent software you have to install on your workstation, then it is unlikely there is a version that would run on the N800 since (even though it is Linux) it is not an x86 processor, it is an ARM processor.

You should get more details about what UoT does (maybe ask them what they do with non-PC machines like PDAs and Wi-Fi Blackberry) and ask your question at that itT forum I posted the link to.

can't seem to locate any specs that this won't work on a 15.4 laptop?

I've seen several reviews stating they used this cooler on a 15" lappy...

My laptop is 14"x10", this thing is 13"x11". It might fit to the rubber feet, it would create more of a hazard then it would fix.

found this old thread about nokia n-series smart phone, if it worked for that, does it mean the n800 will work too?
http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=493619Yes, it sounds like you don't have to install software on the device itself. In that case, you should be fine.

yani
Dec 3rd, 2007, 01:35 PM
I'd say that's doubtful.

AFAIK U of T only insists the user download the agent software if your browser's user-agent says you are running Windows. I have had no problems connecting with a Linux notebook or my n770 in the past.

that thing looks like a pot holder of some sort :-0

i presume it works the same way by dissipating the heat throughout the padding. I think I'm going to bite on the cooler and also give one as a present.

seems like heat is a big issue on laptops and something I've never really looked into.

it turns into liquid state when heated.. uses some sodium sulphate stuff....

How does the tablet compare to something like a PDA (Dell axim) for surfing the net? Are people buying them, who don't own a PDA, [or is there something about a tablet that I'm missing out on and don't know?] Thanks!

PDA for internet is a bit too slow. I have my axim, but never use it for internet again until i tried. The screen is way too small, it sure takes so much time to read the whole page, and if the site has a lot of frash and pictures, you can just leave it there and come back after lunch.

i am sure you will regret.

This is best toy to bring internet every where. Streaming video from my media vault would even make it perferct device to go anywhere. I was thinking getting the Eee, but the keyboard is kind overdone on this tiny machine. It makes it more heavy. For the extra 200, i would stick with the Nokia.

i have a 12 tablet pc, yea it is powerful, but it generate too much heat when I put on my lap. It is heavy too when compare with this one.

Only thing is though I still have all my peripherals for the axim... dock, chargers, extra batteries, so it might still be worth it to get an axim off ebay instead.

If no available WiFi (your own home or office, an unsecured/public network, or a hot spot roaming account), then you need a cell phone that has data service and supports Bluetooth linking to your N800. But expect to pay a lot for cellular data in Canada.

You could just install codecs, but you will still run into limitations with resolution too high, unsupported compression options, unsupported audio tracks etc etc. Best to use the purpose-built MediaConverter program, which is very fast and guaranteed to output the best compatible format for your device. Free download.

The iphone isn't available here in Canada and the data rates here make it a non starter. The closer comparison is the itouch and the n800, except the itouch is almost twice the price, so it's not a fair comparison. The utouch has a nicer interface, but the N800 has a bigger screen. The N800 is essentially open source where the itouch is locked down. It depends on what you want to do with it. SKype is an interesting option. As a toy to play around with, the N800 is hard to beat at 2 bills.

Much as I love the N800, that's not quite fair. An 8 Gbyte iPod Touch costs $300. The N800 plus an 8 Gbyte SDHC card is at least $250 for us determined deal hunters, and probably more like $300 for most people. In other words, they're about the same price. They are just optimized for different purposes. I like them both, but I already have an iPod.

Anyone planning on using this as a portable media player (like a iPod)?

Sure, but mainly for video where the big screen is an advantage. It's too big and clunky to carry around all the time compared to tiny pocket-size MP3 music players, and it doesn't store as much music as my hard-drive iPod. I tend to prefer a big hard drive for music storage because I just keep dumping every bit of music I rip or download onto it and never erasing any. I'm still only 1/3 of the way through my CD collection, but I'll get to it all eventually, one song at a time.

If there's no WiFi available and you need to connect the N800 to a wired ethernet port, you need one of those compact wireless travel routers. Update: can't recommend the Belkin Travel Router after trying it. It's a P.O.S. - some of the features don't work, and it seems that Belkin just gave up on trying to fix them and dumped the product.

I already have a box with N800 sitting as a birthday present for someone, did a huge research prior to ordering that one, for $264 from DirectCanada.. now this one for 199... amazing deal.

Reading CHM/PDF eBooks is great on this device, web browsing is easy since it has the same resolution as $399 eee PC (800x480), but size is smaller and battery life is the same as eee PC. Wifi reception on this tablet is better then any laptop around and WAY better then my PowerBook G4 12". N810 is definitely cute, but by the time prices drop on N810 there will be N900 with WiMax and stuff and you will want N900 which will again keep price for 1/2 year and N1000 will be released with WiMax, GPS and new cool 2009 MaxHiWiFiEnd and 1Gb ethernet all in size of a match box with foldable AMOLED 24" touchscreen.

It is Linux, so there will be always be some sort of community around devices already in the wild, so for another 3 years there will be no shortage of new software. Also a lot of Maemo software is written in scripting language Python, so no recompilation is even required if something new and shiny is out but not available for N8XX.

So only 1 hour is left, what are you waiting for? ;)

I'm pretty sure you'll be fine with that card. It's not a great deal, but it's not bad either. Personally I'm waiting for the 16gb cards to get cheaper before I buy.

Amazon has a class 6 SDHC card for $56 US.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P9ZBFA/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

The Kensington that Dell is selling is a class 4 card, which means a minimum 4mb / second tranfser rate.

To utilize SDHC cards, you may have to patch your OS2007 operating system or upgrade to OS2008. I've downloaded the OS2008 files, but I think I'm going to wait for the official release before I upgrade.

Ordered the LaCie Hub yesterday, received before noon today.

I've wanted this since they started selling them earlier this year, but there was no Canadian source, the Canadian dollar was worth/less and shipping was the cost of the unit.

Now Dell ships it to me with free shipping in 24 hours, for $30 less than MSRP.

Thanks Dell, and thanks RFD!

Dell's estimates aren't really accurate. It's not uncommon for items to arrive next-day. It's also not that uncommon for them to be backordered and take considerably longer. For such a big company, their order tracking leaves a great deal to be desired, but I'm happy when I end up on the next-day side of things.

Delivery date of your product might have been changed.
This could have been prompted by the following circumstances:

Mismatch between billing and credit card information.
A system issue that interrupted the order entry flow

If the above occurred as a result of mismatched billing information, you will be contacted directly by one of our representatives within the next 2-3 business days.

If this does not happen, feel free to contact us at Ca_canadacs@dell.com or at 1(800)847-4096

1:14:00 PM Ouch, so it won't be sent out until the 17th?

1:14:53 PM CCCS Alex B there is a 3 to 4 business day shipping time before the item gets to the shipping location.

My E248WFP arrived yesterday, and I got a chance to hook it up today.

I'm very pleased with it! Right out of the box colours look good, but the brightness is a tad high for my taste. I dropped the brightness from 50 to 40 and now it looks gorgeous.

Obviously not as perfect colour accuracy as a 2405 or 2407 Dell Ultrasharp, but solid nonetheless. This is a bright, vivid, gorgeous screen!!!

Canola sucks for divx (unconverted). mplayer works without conversion but is a little buggy.

Is it just me or that there's no choice to set your home city to Ontario, Canada? I even looked for Toronto, Canada. The closest I can find it Ottawa, Canada.

How can you access Tools to Control Panel. I pressed the middle button under the return button, there were Select Applets, .... Tools, under Tools, its Set background image... .. Help.

Is it possible to run MSN Messenger on it? It would be amazing if it does.

Hmm.. I thought ItemFinder already gave you the answer on page 22?? You can use Pidgin on N800 to log into MSN messenger network, but you can't run MSN messenger(Windows Program) on Linux.. Unless wine can be install under maemo OS and MSN messenger works with it(Which I have no clue)

For Pidgin on N800. here is the link I found.

Samething. it was rename from GAIM to Pidgin.

If you don't want to use plugin..

try use your N800 web browser and go to the following link. I think it's the mobile version of regular "Web MSN messenger"

http://mobile.msn.com/device/en-us/default.aspx

Click on the Messenger and it should get you to the Windows Live login page..

Anyone outside of Toronto receive their n800 yet? Mine has been in transit now since Friday. Typically I get things next day from Dell once they ship but this seems to be stuck in limbo with Purolator with no updates.

Got mine yesterday. Flashed it up to the 2008 Beta OS. I like it a lot better with the new OS, looking forward to the final version.

Anyone using theirs for GPS duty? Looking for a decent bluetooth GPS to play around with...

BTW, do not forget to check out the skype and the built in SIP clients.
Just set your sip server, login and password, your N800 becomes a phone.
Pair a SIP account (Get one free from Gizmo Project if you do not have one) with a GrandCentral account, you can make free long D calls to anywhere in US and Canada.

Dealextreme has a Holux unit that's supposed to work OK for 60 bucks US free shipping.

Anyone pick up any screen protectors anywhere? My factory screen protector is all scuffed and I want to pick up a replacement.

What factory screen protector? I didn't notice one with it or are you referring to something else?

EDIT: Never mind, just noticed it does have a screen protector on it out ofthe box.

just buy any PDA screen protector and cut it to the right size.
PSP has about the same screen size as n800, you can buy some PSP screen protectors.
DealExtreme has some 4.3 inch and PSP screen protectors for 1 buck or 2.

I have put on a new screen protector last week.
The scratch starts to come back.
I think the problem is in the stylus not the screen protector.

A friend of mine ordered the n800 for me and didn't receive the order confirmation by email. He called DELL yesterday and they told him that they didn't received any order from him, it's like the transaction has never been done.
Is there someone here in the same situation? Thanks.

It happened previously when I got a NAS, they wouldn't give it to me at the sale price

Does this premium protectors (presumably, thicker plastic) reduce the sensitivity of the touch screeen?

Same thing happened to me with the 4GB SDHC card - the order just seemed to vanish into their system. I did email them about it, but couldn't really be bothered to follow up as there are always other deals on SD cards out there. That does suck though about the N800.

Woah!

They're thinner, designed to be used with touchscreens.

I called Purolator, as the truck hasn't come by my work yet, and they are usually here around 12ish. I figure the holiday rush with all the packages are slowing him down, but I'm hoping he'll be here in the next 9 mins!

A-data is a decent brand. Good price too.

Just remember to update your tablet before using SDHC. Mine came with 26-8, you need 38-2 to correct SDHC issues.

What are the SDHC issues? I put mine in, its working fine.

WEAK! I waited till 6pm at work for Purolator to come by, and they didn't. So I went home, and checked the tracking again. It said 5:07pm: Attempted delivery, business closed.

PSHHHHHH!!! I can see the outside front area of our office if they came by! They never did!

All I know is some N800 users have had issues with SDHC card ending up with corrupted data. I'd rather not worry about the issue and therefore I updated my OS.

I'm contemplating moving to OS2008 beta, divx/xvid is a little choppy in fast action scenes in mplayer - I'm wondering if the cpu speed improvement will help. I'd really like to avoid converting video files. haven't tried UKMP yet as it keeps telling me I'm missing some library files and I'm pretty Linux stupid so it will take time to figure out exactly what that means ;)

Pidgin works well, chatted with some family members with it last night. ScummVM works great, I tried Day of the Tentacle and Sam and Max last night.

Woot, Purolator finally showed up with it ;)

I gotta admit I'm glad I upgraded from the 770 to this one. There certainly is a speed difference. And its not as big as I thought it was compared to the 770.
