It appears as though TiVO is now available in Canada through local retailers. I was looking at the London Drugs flyer and noticed that they have the 80hr dual tuner available for 199. This is a steal considering the Shaw PVR is 325.
Enjoy.

A subscription to the TiVo service is required and the TiVo box will not work without a paid subscription to the TiVo service.
Deal. Breaker.

I paid 69.99 for my Tivo box a couple of months back. The service is about $17/month, but well worth it as it's a better service than what Rogers offers (my friend has Rogers). And being a Starchoice subscriber, I didn't want to pay $600 for an HD PVR.
Also, Tivo will record without a subscription but it works like a VCR which would be pointless.

i wonder if the tivo box can be hacked so you can install a larger hard drive. i know that shaw doesnt allow it. might make this deal worth while afterall.

like i said... its worth it to build or buy a HTPC instead of this.. same features no monthly subscription...

$17 a month for a VCR. Right.
My Rogers SA3200 will do the same thing with a cable that controls my VCR.

the only positive about the TIVo is it may encourage Shaw to drop the prices on their Boxes.

*If* you have to pay $200 for the TiVo and then $17/mo, this device will cost you $400 after the first year, and $600 after the 2nd, etc....all that for a standard def PVR??? Does not seem like very good value to me.

Chia touched on a very key point, no HD with Tivo Canada. That, plus the subscription cost, makes it ridiculous for any Canadian on cable to get, especially with the pvrs and guides available to Canadian subscribers. Yes, an HD PVR might cost a lot more initially, but you do get HD recording, and within 3 years, it will have cost less than the tivo.

Tivo is overrated. It can't record HD here, so forget about it. I'll stick with my Rogers HD PVR.
