I am wondering the 2 $30 off would apply after tax or before tax?

no you can't use your GCs online on stooples.ca
for some reason, generally spking, stooples always appear to be one step behind everyone else :cheesygri
(OTOH, FS/BB have already implemented that online GC system)
might i suggest an alternative: buy it online, and return/repurchase w/ GCs instore

How does this Acer, soon to be on sale, http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?webid=721516&AffixedCode=WW
compare to the Acer currently on sale at The Source, http://www.thesourcecc.com/estore/product.aspx?language=en-CA&ref=1115&product=2515792&catalog=Online&tab=2#more
The one at The Source appears to have a better graphics card, so I guess it comes down to Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor T2310 versus Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core TK-53.
Would any of you technically inclined people please give an opinion? I just need a basic laptop for some surfing and word processing type stuff.
Thanks.

you can send them an email for the PM, or alternatively you can call up CS for the price adjustment.
should be no hassle since they're only PMing their own price.
--------
Yeah for some reason I can't find the black one online either.
if you search via SKU # and it doesn't show up, then it means it's not avail. online (yet?) and there'd be no other way to find it cuz SKU is pretty specific way to search for an item....

If want to play games, go with thesource. However, the T2310 seems to be comparable in performance with the CORE 2 DUO T5250, but it uses less power (longer battery life). I will personally go with Staples, providing it comes with free printer and you can get the price down to $420 using coupons.

Acer OOSI've seen the laptop in-store. You can try your luck with using the coupon codes in-store. Heck, I think someone has called into StOOpleS to try to order by phone and was told to get it in store and use the coupon codes. Doesn't hurt to try that and see if you can get a reference to use coupons in-store.

actually, in the past i've dealt w/ this situation and the coupon for the "free" code is considered an exception to the "max 2 generic coupons applied online" .... i.e. the freebie coupon should work w/ the 2 other coupons
if not, you can always call up to have it manually added.

Just went and got the laptop in store.
I brought in a print out of the staples.ca cart with a $30 and $20 coupon applied.
They applied both coupons in store and added in the printer as well.
449 +taxes for the laptop and printer.
Not a bad deal at all.

Just went and got the laptop in store.
I brought in a print out of the staples.ca cart with a $30 and $20 coupon applied.
They applied both coupons in store and added in the printer as well.
449 +taxes for the laptop and printer.
Not a bad deal at all.
Good job. But how did you get a printout of the laptop with both coupons applied if they're out of stock. It wouldn't let me add the laptop to my cart.

Apperantly STOOPLES is doing some tricks to us.
I added the Lappy to my shopping cart before Mid night with two coupons applied, at 12:00AM, I refresh and saw the price changed to $499, and immediately tried to check out, but it's already OOS for me.
I believe they change the price and OOS the online at the same time.

Have you guys actually sat on this chair, I bought two of them with the $30 coupon and set them up. I couldn't stand the polyurethane smell, I guess it would go away soon but I'm planning to return both as the leather is made of bicast leather.
"Bicast leather is a man-made product that consists of a thick layer of polyurethane applied to a substrate of low-grade or reconstituted leather. Most of the strength of bicast leather comes from the polyurethane coating, which allows this material to be used where strength or durability are required."
You want a chair made of at least top grain leather, which is available from costco.ca but didn't come in black. I got one years ago from costco is made of top grain and the difference is night and day to this.

Ok,
went to a local store and managed to get one using two $30 coupons. I added the laptop using a Winnipeg postal code in my cart, added the 2 coupons and printed it out (in color). I went to the store and ask the guy if they have the laptop (it was showing $599 on the shelf). He said he had 1 and brought it from the storage (the last one). Declined politely the extended warranty, and when we went to the cash, I asked if I could use "those two coupons" - showed him the prinout. He starts saying something about those being online coupons, but I insisted that I called Staples and they told me that I could use them in store. He verified with manager, manager said ok, got it for $501 tax in.
However, I did not bother asking for the printer since I did not want to push too much. I will go back tonight and ask for the printer ;)

this is true and has worked for a lot of people recently. I bought an acer laptop on sale from another RFD thread. A case you can bring up to the manager is that it is out of stock online and you are willing to purchase it as long as you can use the coupons.
After doing the following last night, I managed to use 2 $30 off coupons and one 16 digit $20 off coupon. I showed printed proof by using a similar laptop with the same price range to show that the coupons were accepted.
good luck hunting!

There is a bootable partition (use F2 bios setup and alter the boot order) and boot from that partition.. it is the system recovery.. it went through and reinstalled Vista and mine is up and running now.
It would have been nice if they included a CD instead of throwing it on a partition.. what file is corrupt for you?

I don't have this model of Acer. I believe your XP install disk doesn't have driver for the SATA controller. Chenge your BIOS setting to make the SATA to support legacy IDE mode. If the BIOS does not that option, you need to make a SATA driver disk.

actually, since my main prob is even identifying the wireless adapter, could any of you let me know what Vista says it is? Documentation seems to suggest it is a "Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG" as does Acer's website.. but the XP drivers for that just get me nowhere.. I'm left with an "ethernet adapter" in the device manager that I cannot seem to install drivers for.

Picked up an Acer 5720-6200 lappy for $699 - 2 x $30 coupon codes at a local Staples. Went for the 6200 model b/c of the extra ram (2gb vs 1gb) and more importantly dedicated 256mb Geforce 8400m GS video card. Also got the free printer (useless to me)...the guy didn't want to let me use the coupons at first but after I charmed him, he was super cool and agreed to input them, so I got $60 off instore. YMMV ofcourse, but it's def. possible... BTW first store I visited, the guy was a total a$$ about the coupons and so I left which was ok b/c they only had an open box forsale... 4th store I visited had the laptop brand new and the guy let me use the codes....score....but not sure if i'll be keeping it yet, b/c I want to see how some games run on the Geforce 8400m GS card...if it's decent, it's replacing my dual core 4200+ with ATI Radeon x1900 desktop...
At first it was missing a .reg file. BigFont something. Then iastor.??? is what caused the hangup. I boxed it up and marched back to Staples. A little discussion and buddy tried firing it up as well (Were you offered to have us set it up for you? for a fee of course, yeah but I'm not paying for that) Anyway left with a new one, same missing .reg file but no issue with a iastor and she booted up.

Dud or curse of Vista?????? Vista wouldn't even load on mine. Corrupted or missing file!!!!!!!!! For F sakes! And no discs included.
You can also press "Alt" and F10 when the computer is booted up, which will open Acer ecovery and will allow you to reset to factory default windows set-up which is basically the same as using a recovery disc.......
Hope you got everything all set up OK now

Well, by dumb luck I saw in some spanish forum that people have had some success using the driver for a Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Adapter. I tried it, and it works (sort of)!
I can connect to my router (and my neighbours) only so long as WEP encryption is not enabled... not sure if it is a driver issue, an compatibilty issue with my router (d-link di-64) or some other issue.. spent enough time on the problem tonight though so I'll save that troubleshooting for another day.

Picked up the Targus USB hub. Got one last year for $40 on sale at Staples, so at $20 this is a great deal. Thanks OP.
Note: if you have a thin laptop with only vertical USB ports, this still works. The USB connector on the hub is detachable and once detached you can orient it anyway you want. I had to do this on my Thinkpad T61.

So I've never did anything with Staples before. Im curious to the steps that people took to get this Laptop deal with the coupons. Do you do this?
1. Purchase Laptop online?
2. Price Match with Futureshop?
3. Add 2 coupons codes
4. Add printer coupon code.
5. Pick up printer?

can someone pls scan the coupon codes of the 2 $30 and put them up? the manager told me if i can provide the actual coupons (printed is allowed) and he will give me $60 off
i believe only a small minority actually gets the physical copies of the coupon mailed to them.
so you'd be luck if there's a nice RFDer willing to u/l a scan...

For the laptop ...i called in this morning ...but the CSR gave me a hard time with the coupons...she said no coupons allowed after price matching .....she added the free printer though....she was horrible in her service...putting me on hold for half an hour and rudely saying coupons are not allowed after price matching

mine is a ACER ASPIRE 5720-4643. The green thing on the KB says "Aspire 5720Z"
The processor is a T2310 in mine.. so it sounds like you did get something different.
There is a T2330 in mine too! Weird, but Awesome :)
Sticker and box specs say it should be a T2310, but mine is a T2330. For those wondering, these new Pentium Duos are no slouch, mine gets a 4.7 performance rating in vista. CPUZ says it as a Core 2 Duo T5200 Merom based CPU.
Also, did you see how easy it is to upgrade the guts! Huge panel comes off the bottom which gains access to the RAM, WiFi, Modem, another free mini express slot, and right there is the heatpipe with the CPU socket in plain view. I'm very excited about this, not having to rip the whole laptop apart to clean out the dust from the fans or to swap out the CPU down the road. I have a feeling dropping in a T7xxx series CPU if I find a cheap one someday would be a NICE upgrade. ;)
So.. the deal. I tried to order online but OOS, so I went to Staples. They would not let me use online coupons. I said, well then I'm going next door to FutureShop because I can get a lower pricematch with them if you won't allow me to use any coupons. Off I go, and I did pretty well. I got the Aspire 5720-4643 and got them to give me the free printer too. They didn't have F2140 so they gave me a Deskjet F4180 for free! All for 489.95 + tax.
Is the 5720 submodel from Staples a 4643? Because the flyer shows a black LCD surround, and mine from FutureShop is white. I also have a SD card reader and Expresscard slot on the left hand side. I'm curious if the model I got is slightly different (besides the T2330 mistake).
Some other good things, Harddrive is just as easy to get at under a separate hatch, and is a Western Digital 160 Gb 5400 RPM SATA. It has Firewire 400 which I was surprised to see in a budget model. Display is extremely bright, and I'm starting to wonder if it could be LED backlit but I can't find any info on the panel. There is a IR receiver in the front, but no remote included.
Annoyances: The left shift key is WAY too small, and there is a useless in the way \ key where the rest of the left shift should be. The real pain about this is the \ key is a duplicate. There is another \ right where it should be.
The touchpad is an ALPS, all my other laptops have been Synapse and the ALPS driver is stupid. I like to map the left and right of the 4 way rocker to be internet browser back and foward, it appears that there is now way to do this with the ALPS driver. Instead I have to use gesture recognition and it knows if I swipe left at the top of the touchpad to go back, and right is forward. At least that is a kind of cool workaround, but I'd still rather have the keys. I will never use left/right rocker for scrolling left and right. Sigh.

I actually had it easy. First i went to the worker in that computer section and asked to pm staples for the webcam, and then he just told me to go to the cashier and they'll do it right away. He didnt' bother calling staples to see if they had stock. So i just went to the cashier and he did it for one, and i asked if i could get another one, and he said i could. so yay!
be careful though, cause the guy working in the computer section said that i would only pm the instant rebate, not the online rebate cause they don't pm online rebates, but at the cash, the guy overlooked it. so i got lucky i guess.

well, fact is, that they don't PM MIRs,... their PM policy says so, despite a bit vague in that it only mentions "rebates" and not which kind --- there's IRs, and MIRs
of course, we're assuming it's the MIRs that don't apply.

The T2330 or the T5250?????
Technically the T5250 is the better cpu, It has more L2 cache and a faster FSB. This is the only difference, the T2330 actually shows as a Core 2 Duo 5200 in CPUZ tests.
T2330 is actually a 65nm Core 2 Duo Merom Core, 64 Bit, it just has had it's FSB lowered, and L2 cache reduced. I wish they didn't market it has a Pentium Duo, because hearing word Pentium name makes me think power hungry CPU 2 years old, which is not true at all. T2310 and T2330 are using the Merom core, they are very very good.
Real world performance, the T5250 series is about 5-10% faster than the T2330
So I'd say only buy the 699.99 model if you really want to have the Core 2 sticker, more Ram, and the GeForce graphics for gaming.

Yeah ok cool thats what I was thinking...yeah I got the $699 model b/c of the Geforce graphics card....ran a bunch of games last night and was very impressed...I've never seen a laptop move graphics like that before...COD4 even ran good in 1024x768.... medium graphics settings though...

I planning to use the Acer mainly for internet, emailing and occasional photo and video editting. I think I'm to get some RAM from Canada Computers and bump the ram to 2Gb. The graphics is definitely a limiter on the $499 model but I can live with it as long as it allows me to do the necessary things I need. For gaming purposes, I have my PS3.

I know of one store that will accept online returns IF and ONLY IF you accept the fact that you will ONLY be given store credit back. I don't know how Staples individual store policies work but I believe that they don't want to take the individual store "hit" by accepting your online returns. Regardless, not accepting online returns when several other adjacent Staples stores do is complete BS.

I stated that there's no reason why I cant use the coupon instore (well..ya..even thought i know it's for online only) if I can use it online. I asked her isnt Staples online and instore (The REAL physical shop) the SAME SHOP...bot have the same freaking LOGO, COLOR and NAME...and she said no. So, next question I asked her about the return policy for item bought online and that's what the bs she gave me...!@#!@$~#$#@

I don't know how many cell, but it's 4000 Mah
Battery life estimate in Vista says around 2.5 hours without tweaking the power settings.
Considering my Aspire 3613 with a Pentium M 750 got 2.15 hours on a 2000 Mah battery in XP I'm hoping I can squeeze 3 hours out of the T2330.
I'm a bit limited with the Santa Rosa chipset modifications (likely because it's so new), Notebook Hardware Control won't let me specify voltages or custom speedsteppings like I could for my old laptop.

Intel Core Duo (Yonah)
Pentium M successor
Models (clock, FSB):
T2450 (2.00 GHz, FSB 533 MHz)
I don't know if this is better than a T2330, It is a Yonah core instead of Merom, and is 32 bit only. The problem is that if it is a Yonah, then you have an older motherboard, socket, and GPU. I don't think you have a X3100 with this CPU. Check you graphic specs.

It is 6-cell according to ACER.ca website:
http://www.acer.ca/public/page4.do?sp=page3&dau22.oid=24306&UserCtxParam=0&GroupCtxParam=0&dctx1=27&CountryISOCtxParam=CA&LanguageISOCtxParam=en&ctx3=-1&ctx4=Canada&crc=1830664493
Six-cell lithium ion battery: up to 3.0 hours life depending on configuration and usage (may be reduced if Windows Vista™ Aero is enabled); 2.5 hours recharge time with power off, 3.5 hours with power on
I am just wondering what's the real life experience compared to specification... after battery fully charge and you unplug it.. how many hours you get? or better yet.. how long it last on web-surfing usage before it die? with or without wireless?

The battery lasts about 2.5 to 3 hours from my testing. I customized my power plan though (5%-50% CPU use, low lighting when on battery). Was running it hard, as I was doing a lot of installations and what not.
How did you people get them to accept the coupons, I was turned down flat-out. Can't even attempt to argue it seeing as it says right on the site that it's only valid for online and phone orders.
Some tips:
- If you're doing a clean install like me, first just make a complete image of the hard drive. You can just use the EISA partition to make the discs or just boot into the system and use an imaging software like Acronis TrueImage.
- After you have secured the factory image, you want to reformat fully, including the EISA partition. Normally, you can't touch this partition, Windows just won't allow you. It takes up almost 10gb of space, so it's kinda a waste.
- The quickest way to format/unallocate it is to use the Ubuntu LiveCD (7.10 gutsy works well). Boot into LiveCD, and use the Partition Manager and remove that partition
- You now have access to all the space in your hard drive. Install XP or Vista, whichever you prefer. I personally installed Vista 64-bit as a clean install of it is easily superior to XP.
- From reading previous comments, it seems some of you have different internal hardwares compared to others. I personally had the Atheros WLAN, Suyin camera, Ricoh card reader, toshiba hdd. Just be aware of which drivers you need for your clean install

i'd be interested in knowing if they actually have a policy stating such nonsense... i'm not aware of their instore return policy that states such.
and if they do, it better not be one of those "internal" policies which aren't allowed to be seen by the public and "only for employees"...
AFAIK, store credit only applies if you return an item w/o a receipt...

I'm very happy with the specs.. everything except that damn ALPS touchpad. The crappy touchpad control and bad key placement on the keyboard almost makes me want to return the laptop. The drivers SUCK. I want to map the 4-way rocker button to be browser back and forward like on my old Acer laptop.. and it will not let me. I tried almost all afternoon to find a better driver, or somehow get a Synaptec driver working because they are so much better. It's driving me crazy. You can use back/forward gestures on the ALPS touchpad, but guess what.. only works with IE, not firefox. ARG. Can you other buyers please check your touchpad driver.. if you don't have ALPS I might return mine just to get the better control.
Oh yeah, and the unlimited volume wheel? It's counter intuitive.. you move it up for vol down, and down for vol up. It only works if the launch manager app is running, but there are no options for it. Sigh.

I did as a previous poster suggested and printed out a cart with the coupons listed on the sheet (using a Winnipeg address). Then when I went to the store I just said that the staples head office told me the codes would work in store and it wouldn't be a problem. No real hassle from the employee as he tested and they were working on the system.

I live in Edmonton, so I doubt that knowing which store I went to (South Edmonton Common) will help you if you live in Mississauga. :)
I called the store and made sure that they had stock. Then I went into the store with a printout of the coupons added to the cart with another laptop and told them that I couldn't buy the laptop online because (a) it was out of stock and (b) they couldn't give me a free printer online. I asked the manager politely whether or not she could add the coupons to the deal, and she did so without too much grief. I was quite happy with her service and wrote her a complimentary note right there on the spot.
I think that going in and being a jackass (or even mildly antagonistic) is generally a recipe for failure. Most of the time, when I go in and am polite and feign some mild ignorance, they're pretty nice to me. Good luck.

Called Office de la protection du consommateur, got a case opened. They said stOOpleS must have provided enough quantities to satisfy the demand. They don't care if stOOpleS had problems with their suppliers.
Hope Staples agree and fix their problem by not specify the number of unit (limited stock) on sale. Since it will kill all the PM with FS/BB if they say that on ads; or, by just shipping all the stock to PQ :cheesygri

Anyone got a free printer with their online orders?
I bought mine without the coupon and I phoned them about it. They said it is an instore promtion and I cannot get a free one. They told me to return it if I didnt want it.
I just went to my local staples and had them add the printer. Just have them do a return/repurchase and add the printer.

That is the official specs, but some have shipped with T2330 CPUs by mistake. 1.6Ghz vs 1.46 Ghz. The rest is all the same.
I'm confused. Are both the T2330 and T2130 64 bit systems ? From the intel website,
"Supported Features: Dual Core
Enhanced Intel Speedstep® Technology
Execute Disable Bit 1
Intel® EM64T 2"
"1 Enabling Execute Disable Bit functionality requires a PC with a processor with Execute Disable Bit capability and a supporting operating system. Check with your PC manufacturer on whether your system delivers Execute Disable Bit functionality.
2 Intel® EM64T requires a computer system with a processor, chipset, BIOS, operating system, device drivers and applications enabled for Intel EM64T. Processor will not operate (including 32-bit operation) without an Intel EM64T-enabled BIOS. Performance will vary depending on your hardware and software configurations. See http://www.intel.com/info/em64t for more information including details on which processors support Intel® EM64T or consult with your system vendor for more information. "

Does anyone who brought the laptop know what is the bluetooth buttom do? I dont think there is bluetooth device with the laptop.:confused:It shouldn't do anything. I have an Acer AS5002WLMi that doesn't have bt but when you push the bt button, a message pops up that says "No Device".

The bt button is simply there out of sheer lowering costs. For a manufacturer to produce a variety of lines of laptops with different levels of specifications, they simply build a generic baseline unit, and then customize it to the end-level specifications. That is to say, the higher models of the Aspire HAVE the bt module., they just left the button there for all their other models because it was cheaper to do so.
This is a great thing for me, because it means there MUST be an internal housing for a bt module to be added now, and I won't be stuck with carrying a usb dongle for the same purpose. Yes, it'll be a little steep to get a pci module, but I prefer having it on the inside.
Now if anybody can find me where I can find this ACER Genuine module, I'd be happy.
If you are interested in upgrading to the bt module., please email me (thru RFD interface). I'll see if I can do a group buy :).

If anybody is interested in doing a group buy for this pci (mini) bt module for the Acer., talk to me.
I'm putting in an order for one myself. Takes 6 weeks from Acer., at $55'ish+taxes+shipping for starters.

Big thank you to OP.
I ended up getting the 5720Z laptop for $439, a free HP F2140 printer, as well as 5000 sheet/case paper ($44.96 value)
I searched for some coupons on another thread and added in the coupon. =)
This is the best purchase from Staples ever. From the money saved, I can go buy a 2Gb ram and use it on this laptop.

Help,
I created the backup dvd's for the 5720-4643. I was installing ubuntu to dual boot with vista. It worked however I could not get the wifi to work with the built in 802.11. Luckily I had an old pcmcia wifi card. But unluckily, this acer model does not have a pcmcia slot. It only has an expresscard 54.
I mucked around with drivers and messed up something. Now when I try to boot to vista I get a message, "Cannot find file: c:\d2d\images\*.wsi when try to determine UI language" I've gone through the recovery dvd's twice and still continue to the get the above message. Anyone know how to get around this ?
thanks,
sylvestor.

cue rant/
So I get a pm offering the 5720-6200 for $800. Claims it' sealed. I ask him why the heck he wants $800 when any self-respecting RFDer would've slapped on AT LEAST $50 in codes...anyway he says he used only a $20 off .
When I say naw it's too high for my friend, and that before returning it to the store he should list it on RFD for sale, he disappears without a reply???
Why do People like this WASTE this time and effort., go scoop up a limited bloody hot Deal thereby cheating someone ELSE who legitimately wants it-OUT of the opportunity.....only to RETURN IT later? What a waste.
Really Annoys me!
p.s. This g00fball blows me off saying I couldn't have used any codes in store anyway....what a n00b. Of course you can use coupons in store. It's if you have the charm to get it done that perhaps is lacking ;).
Oh...and if you are reading this, and you actually did end up doing the RIGHT THING, let me know so I remove you from my "just a punk" list . Otherwise.....most disappointed in your demeanour and wanton disregard for Wasting a Hot Deal!
bah!!!
