So I come back home for the weekend and my parents are telling me that the furnace is messed up.
The blower turns off but the furnace is still running. This only happens sometimes while other times they're both off at the same time (random?).
Does anyone have any ideas on what could be the problem?

Are you meaning to say the the burners are still on, after the blower has shut off???

There is a blower for the combustion chamber on my furnace as well. It comes on before the gas comes in and before the furnace lights up. This creates a airflow up the chimney. This fan goes off shortly after the fire goes out but the main furnace fan itself (the one that circulates the air in the house) remains on until the heat exchanger temperature gets below a certain level.
There may be nothing wrong at all and that no one paid attention to what was going on before. Just check it.

Sorry I may have used wrong term for blower as I'm not too familiar with furnaces. The main furnace fan as you're referring to is not running but if I go down to the basement the furnace is clearly still on doing something (burning gas?)

In that case, you have a serious problem. Call the furnace repair folks. Off the top of my head (and that ain't worth much LOL), I think that one of the temperature sensors is busted. You could cause severe damage inside your heat exchanger or other parts of the furnace. They could get too hot without air being blown over it.
