Scratched hardwood- what to do?

I just moved, and some of the furniture scrated the hardwood. What is the best way to repair it? The scratches seem light.

If it's not scratched below the finish coat, there's nothing you can do except for replacing the scratched boards (if pre-finished).

No wood filler will stick to varnish:idea: . If it's not bad, then just leave it, eventually you will get more scratches & dents...that's just the beauty of hardwood floors ;)

Next time you will remember to be more careful when moving furniture:D

I hope you put some kind of floor protectors (felt) on your furniture & everything that goes on your floors.

change them if they are prefinished boards

sand and varnish...truth is, without seeing how deep, or scratched up it is, none of us can say for sure..but those are your options depending how severe...from a light touch up with a wax or a varnish to replacing the boards completely...But I would say that this is only if they are really bad, and it doesnt sound like it is.

If these are just long narrow scratches that have broken through the finish (revealing the raw wood) go to the store and pick up some Min Wax stain pens (you can find them in the isle where all the other wood stains are). They are like felt pens and cost about $5 each. You may need a couple of colours to match your floor.

They are easy to use, just fill in the scratch with the pen and whipe away any extra right away with your finger. Add another coat in another colour if you need a better match. If you screw up you can lift the colour with something like rubbing alcohol so these things are pretty fool proof.

If you have just dented the floor, you can buy coloured wax fillers (flooring stores have the best ones) but they will eventually pop out so you have to keep a supply around. Personally I wouldn't bother. Wood does get dings, it's part of living with wood. You will feel better if you think of it as character.

Another product you can try is call Trade Secret (also sold where the wood stains are). It's like a polish/oil that comes in a light and a dark. It's actually intended to cover small scratches in furniture but works on floors. It has a bit of a sheen to it so if you did break through your finish it may help you get the sheen back where it is broken.

Meanwhile, while you are at the store, pick up felt pads for the bottom of all your furniture legs. Don't buy the hard plastic protectors because if anything ever gets caught under them (like a piece of sand) it will scratch the floor.
