View Full Version : Best backup software?

Hi, I just paid $700 for data recovery, now I want to know what the best data backup software is.
Basically, I want to set specific files/folders that are automatically synced with another drive every day at a certain time. I don't want to set up RAID since I don't need the whole drive backed up, just about 10gb... so U3 USB drives aren't really an option
Preferably free, but I don't mind paying for it, considering it'll save me $700 if this ever happens again, which I hope it doesn't
Anyone have any ideas?

norton ghost for copying HDD, you should back it up like every month if your information does cost that much

windows sync-toy is a good free one if all you need is a straight copy of documents and files. you could schedule it as well.
if you were looking to make a back-up image your whole os, norton ghost, acronis true image, and drive snapshot are all good. (but not free)

Acronis TrueImage beats norton ghost.
I also use syncbackSE for regular syncing/backup, I'm not so sure about the feasibility of using trueimage's incremental feature for backing up.

One time ago, I've tried all these solutions but I've found that no matter what, they all take A LOT of resource, no matter how much or what your backing up. Especially if your running a slow computer like I was.
My solution finally came by installing a secondary HDD and running a thing that emulates "rsync" from linux. I had the script run everyday at a certain time. It would run flawlessly everytime, very quickly, and hardly take any resources. It was beautiful. It would also only backup the files if they were changed etc.
It took a bit awhile to setup though and I'm not sure the exact things I used to make it work. But it was worth it. If your not too technically inclined, this might not be the best solution as it takes a bit to setup. But if you are look up cygwin, rsync and you should be able to set something up.

I'm looking for something to sync the files mostly, a straight copy, because I work off 2 computers, but have enough power to not hog resources, synctoy looks promising, im going to give that a try, I read some reviews, and it sounds like people have problems with it though.
Anyone tried Good Sync?

Second Copy. Very, very flexible. You can choose which directories/files to back up, when to do the backup, with backup verification etc. Works across a network.

I use both of those as well. I have SyncbackSE setup so I run it as needed with a number of jobs to a dated folder on an external HD. Great piece of software for daily targetted backups.

+1 Here too! I used Acronis True Image 10's boot CD to backup my files to a separate Hard Drive...I'm not able to get it to work with my new Raid0 setup though :(

Yeah, I started using Syncback last night, it seems pretty good
