Hey everyone:
I'm doing a little bit of research on banking for a paper, and I just wanted to know...
1. Do you still bank with tellers at a branch?
2. When you do bank with a teller at a branch, what type of transaction are you doing (i.e. deposit, buying a money order, etc.)?
3. When you use an ATM, what type of transaction are you doing?
4. Do you use online banking? If you could change or add one thing to online banking, what would it be?
Feel free to answer as many questions as you feel comfortable answering, whether it be one or all. :)
Thanks in Advance.

1. No, I use PC Financial as well
2. I don't remember the last time I did teller banking.
3. Withdraw (Maybe once a year, I'd get a cheque that I'd have to deposit)
4. Almost exclusively as well. I would like the ability to access both my PC Financial and PC Mastercard from the same interface :)

1. Haven't been in a bank in years.
2. Last time was to get a money order. Before that, usually if there's a problem with my card/account etc.
3. Withdrawals & deposits only.
4. almost 99.9% online banking. Bill payments, transfers, updates, EMTs etc.

1. Rarely these days...ATM is more convenient.
2. When I need a bank draft/money order, currency exchange or depositing/withdrawing large quantities of bills (ATM can't handle)
3. ATM is for small deposits and cash withrawls
4. Use it to pay bills and transfer money from accounts.
Make fees for online banking go away... actually pay to use online banking since it's cheaper for the banks.

1. No. I had only banked with teller once when I was 12-14 years old to deposit a USD check which I believe was deposited as CAD without conversion..
2. n/a
3. Deposit/Withdrawal/Transfer(rarely)
4. Yes. Instant transfers between third party financial institutions.
4. Almost exclusively. Ability to transfer money from my account to somebody else's account.
Some banks (RBC, Citizens Bank of Canada) and credit unions (Achieva, Coast Capital) allow you to transfer to their own clients as long as you know their account information.

1. Mainly I use PCF but I do keep an RBC account for this purpose.
2. At a teller it is usually something like paying business GST.
3. ATM is for depositing cheques or withdrawing cash.
4. I use online banking almost exclusively.
The main thing I wish for was that there was some central universal way to send money with no fee to any other account in the country using some kind of one-way system. I.e. If my friend owes me $20, then I give him some kind of special ID number (which is different from the account number and can only be associated through some secure private database) that can ONLY be used to deposit money into my account. He enters it into his online banking and sends me $20. This special unique identifier system is great because anyone intercepting it cannot use it to fraudulently steal your money. Even if you send it over unencrypted e-mail or IM, it cannot be directly linked to your bank account, identity or used for anything except sending you money.
People should be able to generate an "unlimited" number of these deposit ID numbers for any account, allowing the privacy of disposable ID numbers.

1. Only to deposit rolls of change
2. Deposit rolls of change :)
3. Deposit / Withdraw
4. Use it almost daily. Do most all bill payments and transfers online. With I could set up rule-based systems for online banking (Like... when you get a deposit in this account of $X or greater, pay these bills). This way I wouldn't have to bother doing it manually as the deposit of my cheque would do it automatically.

1. Yes
2. Deposit, withdrawals
3. Deposit, withdrawals
4. Yes
One thing I'd change is allow you to pay another payee from the same bank online instead of doing this through the phone to set it up.

1. Have not seen a teller in many years, most of my banking is with PCF. Recently I even set up a new mortgage and HELOC at Scotiabank without ever leaving the house (a bank employee dropped by my house to sign all papers...)
2. N/A
3. I use ATM for cheque deposits, cash withdrawals (US$ and Canadian)
4. Yes

1) I use PC Financial, so No
2) N/A
3) Deposit/Withdrawl
4) I only use online banking - truth be told I wouldn't know how else to bank. If I could add one thing to online banking I'd probably want the ability to do more things from online (like apply for a LOC, pre-approved for a mortgage, open up a checking account entirely online, etc)
Edit - Good luck on your assignment.

1. Once a long while.
2. Deposit a stack of cash; update the bank book; drop off an envelope so that it will be couriered to my bank Rep. Sometime, it actually is faster to use the teller than line up for the ATM outside.
3. Withdraw cash and deposit cheque.
4. Yes. Transfer other people's money to my account and I am the only one who can do it and not be detected. ;)

1. yes, once a week to deposit paycheque.
2. deposit only
3. cash withdrawls only
4. Yes, for everything from paying bills to checking our mortgage balance, etc. I love TD's web banking but the only thing I wish I could do was to transfer money into another person's account. Currently I have to call Easy Line to do that.
psst Octavius, I can do all of those things with TD's web banking. ;)

1) Used in the past, but not anymore since I have an account with PC financial.
2) As I said, I don't talk with the tellers anymore since PC fits my needs.
3) For ATM transactions, I cash my money at a CIBC of PC ATM. I get "No boundaries" access for using the CIBC ATMs, complete with no fees of course!! ^_^ I don't know what is the opposite for CIBC users using PC ATMs are....
4) Yes, I use online banking to check out my transactions, pay my bills and print statements (If I want to get a printed copy of that statement, I could incur a fee). If there's only one thing that I could add to online banking, it would be paying stuff online using my debit card as opposed to my credit card.

1. No unless something I can't do online or at the machine.
2. Certified cheques.
3. Withdrawals, deposits.
4. Yes.
TIP: Here's a tip for automating some of your banking. If you have an ING account, you can set up scheduled money transfers between *any* bank accounts linked to your ING account. So if you want to schedule transfers on a regular basis between banks, use ING as the scheduler - money comes from bank 1 into ING, the next day money goes out of ING to bank 2.

Depositing.
4. Do you use online banking? If you could change or add one thing to online banking, what would it be?
Funny you should ask. With with one of my accounts they didn't used to have running balances, I bought it up and they said they'd look into it, and now they have running balances.

Just a thought - if you are doing this survey to find the average customer habits I think this was the wrong place. i don't consider people who hang out in RFD or in Finance forum to be the average customer :)

I understand... what I wanted to figure out was whether or not customers who use online banking still do in-branch banking. I figured many users from RFD probably embrace online banking as most of us can be classified as fairly early adopters, so I decided to ask this question here. It's quite obvious from the responses the answer to this is no for day-to-day banking.
If I had wanted average consumer retail banking habits, I wouldn't have asked on here cuz I highly doubt that people who don't embrace online banking would frequent a site like RFD. Asking an online web forum if they embrace online banking = skewed population for sampling.
Thanks for your kind thought though! :)
