I'm pretty sure it's the Dragonball series and not the Dragonball Z series they are doing the movie on. So, half that you mentioned will not be in the movie. I'm betting they are gonna stick with Goku and Piccalo. I'm pretty sure Piccalo is the "villain" in this movie.

Either way, unless they go the CGI route, its gonna suck.

DB is boring.
DBZ and the fact that it has SS Goku/Gohan/Vegita would be the only way I could see it being as action packed as desired.

i heard the guy who played Spike from Buffy The Vampire Slayer is going to play Piccolo.

i wonder what type of approach that Stephen's going to take. is it going to be serious or a parody of the show? i hope it's the latter cause i just don't see it being taken seriously.

i could barely take 30 minutes of pure talking and "powering up". I dunno if i will be able to bear 1.5-2 hours of that. It'll probably 5 minute intro fight in which Goku gets beat up. 30 Minutes of Training, 55 minutes of powering up, 10 minutes of powering up some more, 15 more minutes of powering up, and 5 minutes of an end fight. 3 Minute Theme song to end it off.

i never knew Goku was a white guy, interesting

and

Chow is recommending Zhang Yuqi, leading actress in his new sci-fi film "CJ7," play the role of Goku's girlfriend in the film.

i'm definately looking forward to sitting in the theatres for 2 hours watching those two

heh...I've been talking to "CJ7" writer Vincent Kok these days.
I'm gonna do a collabo with him. It's for the love of movies, and not for movies. We gonna brainstorm a flick together. Vincent Kok Tak-Chiu is also from Canada (Vancouver). seems like a nice guy.

I just hope "CJ7" would be just as good as "Kung Fu Hustle". been 3 years since stephen Chow's last movie came out.

hey tin, are you a film student?

oh yeah...Chow Yun Fat is gonna play Master Roshi? aww come on!!! he's TOO GOOD for something like a Dragon Ball movie. get him and John Woo together and make a real Hard Boiled sequel (forget Stranglehold the video game) lol.

tinlunlau
Dec 20th, 2007, 06:35 PM
I'm not a film student.
I was close to being one but it never really took off.
20 grand (canadian) for a 15 month course at an academy in the CBC building was a bit too rich for my blood. seneca@york never gave me a reply when i applied despite my qualifications. (i did a tv production course in stephen leacock c.i. and those in the t-dot should know what that school used to be known for)

i still work for Joy Sales doing translations for them. In fact, I most recently worked directly in their office in Hong Kong for a Leah Dizon DVD they're releasing in the next few months. (by the way, it was a nightmare getting the english subs done because quite frankly, i think she talks like a bimbo. still a good view!) i do occasional work for Diskotek Media from the USA. Expecting to help them out for the American remastered dvd re-release of "The Stormriders".

As for Vincent Kok, he recently joined a blog site in Hong Kong called alivenotdead.com and I dunno...he musta taken my advice which I suggested in his first blog entry and decided to look for additional help (for writers). Basically, what he is looking someone who has a love for movies, can type chinese (cuz it's a necessity), experience not needed, sense of humor required and so on.. i can't remember his exact words but it goes somewhere along these lines. he knows i'm coming back to toronto and i think he knows it'll be too far for us to communicate. i suggested him that we can work it out with skype (and i do usually sleep very late so time's not a problem). i'm doing this for free. that's why i call it a 'pet project'.

on an added note, chow yun-fat confirmed it according to the newspaper.
he said he's never read the DBZ manga and the role should be "challenging" for him. he also mentioned that it's going to be a brief cameo.

This is just crap. After Batman Dark Knight, either film this straight as a dark heroic tale or gear it to kids. If it's geared toward kids then why is S.Chow involved...oh SNAP! That's because his whole career is built upon silly teen-style movies - except he's 50 years old.

Dude, I don't want to see him dressed as Goku.

Stephen Chow's just one of the producers of this film. He did give some positive input but FOX pretty much turned him down. And he ain't 50 yet.

Oh, c'mon!

It's not entirely his fault. He tried to cast more Asian actors and make better casting decisions in order to not screw it up that much. If anyone's to blame, it's FOX who were naysayers to his suggestions. Stephen Chow's got a huge manga collection in his office. If anyone knows manga, it'd be him.

I don't think they really gave Chow much slack in what he could change. The only reason they wanted him on board was for the fighting, they probably didn't let him anywhere near the script/costumes.

uh, actually, Stephen Chow is most famous for his crude humor, ie) Justice, my Foot!. his martial arts aspect has only become predominate in the last few movies he's done, kung fu hustle and shaolin soccer. It's like Jim Carey's with 23 and eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. anyone that knows of Stephen Chow automatically have the thought of comedy in their minds.... :cheesygri

I think the actor they chose was a ******** decision.

But, you have to admit, Goku has the roundest eyes of any anime character in certain scenes.

In Dragon Ball GT (I know, it's sometimes not considered part of the true story), the characters were drawn as caucasians with VERY round eyes and caucasian features.

www.dbthemovie.com
http://movies.ign.com/articles/937/937176p1.html

The movie has now been officially named Dragonball Evolution.

Honestly, I had my doubts before when the allegedly first trailer circulated around the internet a couple of months ago. It was then debunked by the studio as being something non-official and contained unfinished shots.

This "real deal" trialer is much better than the last one with a bigger budget look. Piccolo looks more green and has a voice that is very fitting for the character. Aside from Goku not looking and behaving like Goku in the Anime, I think this will be a good enough adaptation. Again, I will reserve my final judgement until I actually see it in the theatres...

May be my reaction to this movie is due to the fact that I wasn't that much of a Dragonball fan when I grew up. I always thought that things like Fist of the North Star and Riki-Oh was way cooler...I know a lot of fans boycott this movie just because Goku is white. But I am not one of them...

are you serious?
this movie looks terrible...going to be worst than Street fighter + forbidden kingdom

NOTHING can be worse than Forbidden Kingdom's lack of tapping an all-star asian cast. Other than that, it was fun for a family adventure.

Now, that other Jet Li bomb.., the recent Mummy piece of crap. Unbelievably bad, no way DB can ever be worse.

Better than it being Jet Li.

Imagine if he was Goku. Based on "Jet"'s last few(or dozen?) movie results it would be so bad, everything to do with the Dragon Ball intellectual property would have to file for bankruptcy to recoup.

That being said, this movie sucks except for Chichi :)

No one would cast Jet Li as Goku, thats stupid. Jet Li has the stern face to be Vegeta but then he wouldn't be in this movie to begin with. I'm just saying they could have at least hired an actor that knew martial arts to play Goku.

Forbidden Kingdom wasn't that bad. It's a NA movie and not an Asian movie so the way it was filmed and the fights and the dialogue are geared towards a completely different audience. The same goes with Mummy 3. Not his doing.

His Asia specific movies are leagues better than the movies he has done for NA audiences.

Dragonball should have been an Asian type movie backed by an NA company. The closest thing to this being natural is that the song chosen for the movie is actually done by a Japanese artist.

Too bad Jackie Chan is way too old. A young version of him would have been perfect for this role especially in DBZ. He has the humor side and the serious fighting side just like Goku in the anime.

Jackie Chan would have the right attitude for it, but like you said, he is too old, and I don't know if his physical charactaristics would match very well.

Jay can't act for beans. This films a disaster and deserves to lose money. Watch Ironman, Batman (reboot), Hellboy, Sin City...don't tell me directors/screenwriters can't put it on the screen.

Just a p1ss poor effort from everyone involved. By extension, just a reflection of crappy HK efforts since late 80's. If it wasn't for joint ventures with Mainland TV/Film companies, most HK producers & investers would be bankrupt. No effort.

Actually, from what I've seen, Jaycee Chan had more opportunity to act in a dramatic role than his old man. Jaycee's not doing bad in the film industry. Jackie never really had the chance to shine in a dramatic role in the last decade or two. (We'll have to see how Jackie does in "Shinjuku Incident")

If Stephen Chow had more power in the production, I'm sure he would get Jeff Lau (Lau Chun-Wai) to direct. That guy does wonders with these kinda fantasy movies.

That was the thing. Stephen Chow didn't have much control over the production. Fox wouldn't let him despite the amount of input he offered.

I believe FOX only wants Stephen Chow's involvement in name only.

Alright why couldn't they at least , at the very least, dye his freaking hair black and have it grow out longer so it could be styled properly ! (goku)

The main character is goku, so if they can't get main character right the movie is going to lose major points before it is ever given a chance. The secondary characters, sure people will be mad if its not exact (live with it), but the main character come on ! that has to be exact. The main villian is just as important, so how they messed up both is just down right irritating.

This reminds of the first hulk movie. It was so poorly done, all true fans were very dissapointed. The second hulk movie was so much better, unfortunately a lot didn't bother with it thinking it would be like the first one. (just basing that on people I know and talked to). Anyways we are definitely going to need someone else stepping up after to recreate the DB/DBZ movie because this one looks like it is going to be very very bad.

This movie seriously looks like a 'street fighter' blunder. Its sad this will be released, and there will likely be a lot of people that go see it only to be dissapointed. I still want to watch it despite it (most likely) being horrible, but it won't be in theatres.

P.S where the hell is Krillen ?

The only thing that can save this movie is if its only 1hr 20 min with over an hr of powering up scenes, and at least 5 minutes for ending song/credits.

The idea of a live-person DB movie is stupid in the first place; it just doesn't work. As much as I loved my DBZ growing up, let's face it, there's not much of a storyline.

Loop i:
[Evil alien #i] comes to destroy the earth, Goku and friends get beat up, Goku gets stronger, scenes of him powering up, he beats up bad guy, bad guy gets stronger, goku gets beat up, goku uses spirit bomb and kills the bad guy.

add 1 to i.
If i > 3, replace [Evil Alien] with [Evil Android];
End Loop.

Tell me how that can translate successfully into a real-life movie. Actually, tell me how to do a kamehameha using a real-life actor and not look stupid.

It's a pity that Dragon Ball started off really nice (as in the first season of the animation series) but quickly turned boring. I'm not sure if it's the original intention when the manga (books) kicked off, but the tournament is really stretching, and I'd say ruining what could be a very good story line.

Here's the part that I never understand when I watched DBZ when I was a little kid. I forgot the name of the planet that Goku and Freeza was in, but I recalled it was mention numerous times the planet would blow up in 5 minutes. Those 5 minutes end up lasting like 5-6 episodes which was just crazy!

It's not Dragon Ball without Puar, Oolong or Krillin.

The producers just don't give a crap because they know people are going to see it regardless, even if it's just "to see how much it sucks".

Just look at Transformers, they raped it, and it still made money because of people wanting to see how bad it would've been. - It was the first movie I ever walked out of.

For the love of god, do not pay to watch this piece of sh1t in theatres. Send a message to FOX by making it a total box office bomb, and let them know that people won't pay for this crap just because of nostalgia/sentimentality.

If you must, go download it. And then burn it onto a disc, write a threatening message on the face of the disc with a felt tip pen, and mail it to the studio in an unmarked package. Make sure they know how much they're hated.
