There was a similar story on CBC's The Hour a while back, actually. The generic term for it is "freeganism". It makes sense and all, and some other videos on the subject really show just how much food is tossed out (not to mention that tons of it is packaged and completely good to eat). Still, hard to get around the stigma associated with picking through "waste" for food.

A pastry shop near where I used to work would throw out all its left overs every night. On several occasions I've seen customers still trying to buy and the workers still proceeded to toss everything out.

I was told the owner wants to keep their brand "prestigious". So they rather throw everything out, than discount the product or giving it away. Sad.

Wait till they get sick or get some bacteria in their intestine/stomach. Then they'll be in the hospital soon.

then a bed at that hospital will be taken up, others will have to work harder to treat the extra person in the bed.... maybe work overtime and not get a chance to shop for groceries that day... and so the grocery store will have to throw out more perishable food that didnt sell! lol

And our taxes will pay for it.
