Trailer has me intrigued. Coincidentally I'm reading Stephen Kings' "The Stand" which, for those who haven't read it revolves around a super flu which decimates nearly the entire human race. This movie seems to have a similar outline except that Will Smith is the 'ONLY' survivor of the plague. As seen in the trailer there may be a 'Zombies' in play that only come out at night.
Thoughts?

I believe this movie is actually based on a book...and I believe the 'zombies' are actually vampires

i found it really interesting, since it's pretty original and most of it was surprising because the trailer doesn't give much of it away. but along with that previous comment about half an hour in i thought it got pretty predictable and the end was just a bit crappy

Every time I've seen the trailer so far it's drawn me in a little bit more each time. Definitely need to invest the time to go out and see it. Gotta check out the scores on it first online to make sure it's looking good by both viewers and critics alike.
Anyone else have impressions on it?

i think i'm the only one with a partially negative post in this thread about the movie. but i'm not saying it's a bad movie. definitely one of the better movies made this year, and i could go as far as saying one of my top 3's of this year, it's just that i always find some parts of movies to be not as great as other parts...

Saw this tonight...still unsure of what I thought of it. I'll keep it spoiler free, but the Dog scenes were oddly the most moving parts of the movie, I think the entire theater was in tears :( The ending was kind of a letdown, but keep with the VERY dark theme and tone of the film. Will Smith I think was phenomenal, given the fact he was basically alone the entire film.
Definitely not what most ppl would expect, but friggen scary given the plausibility.

IMAX. For the extra dollar or whatever it costs, you get to see the extended preview for The Dark Knight (which looks awesome) in IMAX, while regular theatres are only showing a standard teaser trailer.

Will Smith was great, but the movie was a disappointment.
I was sad to see the Hollywoodized the ending copared to the book. Read the book if you want the good ending to the story, not the crap that was in there.

Sure there were some stupid parts, but overall I enjoyed it. Which surprised me because over the last few years I've found it really hard not to think "AS IF!" , "GIVE ME A BREAK!" or "STOP TRYING SO HARD TO BE WITTY WHEN YOUR LIFE IS IN DANGER!" every 2 minutes whien watching new hollywood action movies.
I never read the book, which is probably a good thing. I've never liked a movie if I watched it after reading the book.

LOS ANGELES - For the last man on Earth, Will Smith sure has a lot of friends. The Warner Bros. tale "I Am Legend," starring Smith as a plague survivor who may be the last living human, debuted with $76.5 million, the biggest December opening ever and a personal best for one of Hollywood's top box-office champs, according to studio estimates Sunday.
"It's no wonder Will Smith feels so lonely. Everyone else on Earth is in the movie theater," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers.
I've seen it twice.

I thought the ending was solid
Spoiler alert:
It wasn't a typical Hollywood ending where the protagonist survives. I thought that added a different element to the film and it gave reason for the title of the movie.
Excellent flick, it was everything that I expected.

For the debate about the Imax vs regular screen Dark Knight trailer, this is the trailer I saw at a regular AMC theatre when I watched the movie:
http://atasteforthetheatrical.com/deathtrap/default.htm
As for the book SPOILER, MOVE DISCUSSION:
In the book what essentially happens is that Robert Neville turns out to be the vampire. The infected are not all fully out of control, some of them can keep it normalized (they would be the 1% immunte). What happens though is they still show the same symptoms of the disease that all other vampires show so Neville unwittingly kills the human people along with the infected. In the end they actually come and send a slayer to kill him as he is the last normal person on the earth, and to this new half breed he is the legendary "vampire" which kills them.
The movie almost starts to go down this path but then completely abandons the idea at the end to make it more happy for Hollywood. Throughout the movie they tried to show glimpses of the fact that the infected were not just plain and simple zombies, like for example their sadness at the fact Smith captured one of their own, their desire to get her back, and of course mimicing Smith's trap to catch him. I personally though the way the movie ending would go down would be after all the trouble caused in Nevilles house and all the fighting, they would just take the girl and leave, showing Nev that they weren't just brainless and savage and they were still human (disproving his previous spoken theory about having no remaining human characteristics).

Actually, that part - Neville was going insane (Alone for 3 years, who wouldn't?), it is he who actually planted that trap - in his moment of insanity he lost focus and forgot about it. He's been capturing live specimens for his experiments as we find out later, so it only makes sense to place that trap next to the hole in the building.
And I totally agree, the book is a lot better. In the book, he didn't have a fortress - he actually had to repair and build it each and every single day from the previous' night's attacks.

Sorry to hear you didn't like it, though I find it hard to imagine anything in the first three minutes that would turn you off (unless you don't like sci-fi, in which case you can only blame yourself for going).
However, quoting the Toronto Star, the worst reviewers on the planet as a back-up to your opinion, is as untrustworthy as asking a bear to guard your honey supply.

Cry me a river. It’s a Zombie/undead movie; you think everyone will live happily ever after?
I don't know whether you're being serious or not; if you weren't, then just try to ignore this post.
But if you were being serious, then read on.
I gather from your post that just because it's of a certain genre, we should expect a certain ending.
I said I don't know whether your being serious or not because if you are being serious, it's very hard to put into words how ignorant you are, but I'll take a shot at it.
So in a romance, do you expect the girl and guy to get together every single movie? Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
In an action movie, do you always expect the "good guy" to live? Again, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
See the thing is, when you know the ending to a movie, you watch the movie accordingly. Take a romance where the guy and girl don't end up together. Throughout the movie, you're just looking for clues as to why they don't end up together, you're not necessarily enjoying the movie as it comes. If the whole idea of them not getting together is a twist, you already know about it, and the twist doesn't seem as big to you as it should to a first time viewer.
I hope that enlightened you a bit.
dre145 - two people quoted him. But yes, I don't get why they're quoting the spoiler if they're against it.

I think you mean "28 Days Later" (the original from several years ago). I haven't seen "I am Legend: yet, but it does sound a lot like "28 Days Later", just set in NY instead. I'll still rent it when it comes out on DVD, but I'll be sorely disappointed if this is just another Hollywood remake of a good foreign film.

Will Smith can't act? Come on, what are you talking about? Do you do acting as your full time job? Please explain, thanks!
The car was a Shelby Mustang GT I think. The whole premise of the movie was based around the original book, which is entirely different from the film. The film botched everything from the original book except for the whole last man standing concept...
The book wasn't as epic as the scale of the movie, and Hollywood rarely ever do simple small scale stories when it comes to blockbuster-centric films like this one. They just have the need to up scale things...

They used too much cgi and it was pretty bad cgi. The dark stalkers could have been played by people but instead they use cgi. None of the suspense gripped me because of the poor cgi, if they used people to play the dark stalkers then it would draw me into the suspense
Without the suspense you basically get a story about a man and his dog.
This movie really does nothing but to showcase Will smith's ability to act, I would not be suprised if he did the movie for free or even if he financed the movie himself. They should call the movie "I am actor" or something like that.

I remember following this film, back when it was first greenlit in the 1990s and Arnold's name was being tossed around the project for years. But with Arnold's string of late 90s flops and later his bid for governor, the film kinda died until Will Smith got attached to it.
The ending was lame but Will Smith was great in the film and I can't see how this would have worked with Arnold in it. "I'll tuuuurminate you zooooooombies!"
However, quoting the Toronto Star, the worst reviewers on the planet as a back-up to your opinion, is as untrustworthy as asking a bear to guard your honey supply.
The Toronto Star has some of the worst film reviewers in the country. I remember when Planet of the Apes (2001) came out and Pevere gave it 4 stars. But after the film was critically panned across the continent, he backtracked on his original opinion and two weeks later the Star printed his new review giving it one star. That's just weak sauce journalism.

Ouch...
Even Victor Chen, the brother of Hong Kong pop diva Kelly Chen, is giving it a bad review and he actually had some good points. Here's his thoughts on the movie.
Novel: Richard Matheson Writer: Akiva Goldsman, Mark Protosevich Director: Francis Lawrence Cast: Will Smith as Robert Neville, Abbey (a german shepard) as 'Sam'
Plot: (removed due to spoilers)
Review: Wow, the plot took me longer than i thought. Those who havnt yet watched the movie must be thinking, dude, isnt it a little too much for a spoiler? I am trying to make a point here, first of all, the story frame, in my opinion, gives a really successful contemporary transformation from the original fiction since1957. Sadly the plot killed it, especially the end being so... abrupt and ultimately, empty, which carries on to the second point: 'emptiness'. It is the last thing i want from a movie, for it also means a waste of time, which is a tragedy for this movie; cos the story frame is so good, clearly the production have done a lot of research, and they got Will Smith to play Robert Neville, this movie could have been great! Instead they focused on the zombie bashing action hero aspect, which down-graded this movie by a mile. The only praiseworthy part is the relationship between Robert and Sam, some scenes are even emotional, which is the reason why i put Abbey the german shepard on the list of cast. She did well enough, in fact she was so intelligent she refused to play fetch with Robert so they had to replace another dog for the shot. All in all, the original story has depth on the darker side of instinctive humanity, this movie has one and half hour of Smith's trembling muscles and CGI gore; unless typical hollywood is bothering you, otherwise, take your shot on yet another zombie movie.

The heck? Why is that review giving out the entire plot of the story? I don't think that person knows how to review a movie at all. Oh and I don't agree with the idea that he makes good points about the movie.
Anyway, the movie was great. I enjoyed it, and I think it was one of the year's best. I couldn't care any less about whether or not it stuck to some book that it is supposedly based on. I rather just read the book for a different experience.

Obviously you haven't seen enough good movies because "The Warlords" is killing "I Am Legend" at the box office right now. Victor Chen is not a professional film reviewer. He's in the entertainment industry and his sister Kelly was the actress who played the shrink in the "Infernal Affairs" trilogy. The film was okay but it has its flaws. He pretty much summarized how I thought about the movie. It felt empty.

I don't care if this dude was the Pope, his 'review' was not really a review. He basically told the plot first, and then said that it was empty. Now just saying empty without really backing it up doesn't hold. That was his only real complaint.
Btw, it is nice that you actually took out the spoiler part of the review. Jeez, don't people read reviews so that they can decide whether to watch a movie or not? Who reads a review after already spending money/time on the product?
What is up with the sister comment? Sorry I don't know who his sister is, nor do I care. I am just commenting on his lame review. Also, just because I don't watch oriental movies does not mean I don't watch good movies. Warlords looks interesting though.

Wow, there seems to be a lot of hate towards this movie.
I personally thought this movie was fantastic. The feeling of isolation is very well done, and while the zombies themselves were unrealistic CGI, they were adequately menacing. I'd say this is probably Will Smith's best performance to date, surpassing even his role in "The Pursuit of Happiness", but this will probably be overlooked in awards because it doesn't play to the "Oscar" type movie drama.
I saw this in IMAX, and it DOES make a difference here because a lot of the intense moments are done with a sort of "behind the gun" camera, so you can almost feel like you're in Smith's shoes. The first scene with his interaction with the zombies was done perfectly in my opinion, and was probably the most intense scene I've seen this year.

I fail to see any remote relationship between what Digo said and saying "The Warlords is killing I Am Legend in the box office right now". If anything, I'm pretty sure the producers wouldn't give a crap about what they pull in from Hong Kong when the movie had the best December opening of all time.
I also fail to see why quoting someone with little to no movie review experience would be relevant here. If it's a backup to your own opinion, that is a weak backup and you should have tried quoting someone people would actually know. I honestly hope nobody took that review seriously.

If Warner Bros. didn't give a crap about what they make in Hong Kong, they wouldn't have sent in Will Smith to Pacific Place in Hong Kong and do heavy promotion for the movie. And believe me when I say it. Warner Bros. is giving us the shaft when it comes to film distribution. "I Am Legend" came out days before the North American release and don't let the Dec. 13th HK release fool you. Theatres actually show it 2-3 days before official release date. I bet you that the Hong Kong DVD will come out a month before the Region 1 version hits stores. Happened to "300", "Harry Potter", and several other flicks from Warner Bros.

I don't understand the need to post a review from some no-name HK reviewer in this thread. That's the equivalent of posting an IMDB review....
I understand Rotten Tomatoes is horribly biased towards North American reviews, but when they post international reviews at least they're from accredited media outlets. For example, the site will list UK reviews from Empire, not the Daily Mirror.
Theatres actually show it 2-3 days before official release date
Umm, it has become the norm for blockbusters to be released a day or two earlier in Australia and Asia, compared to the North American release. There's different "official release" dates for each market. The correct terminology is "world premiere" for the first date relased to any market, an in recent history studios are using Japan for their world premieres (HP5, Spidey 3, WOTW, etc.)
If Warner Bros. didn't give a crap about what they make in Hong Kong, they wouldn't have sent in Will Smith to Pacific Place in Hong Kong and do heavy promotion for the movie.
The HK appearnce is just an afterthought compared to the Japanese premiere, which was the main visit for his Asian tour.
Hong Kong is an important film market, but the major studios are really focusing on Japan at the moment. It's the most important market after North America and Europe. Its population has a much lower film-going rate relative to other developed nations. That's why the studios have been going over the top with the Japanese premieres in recent years... If they're in the area the stars will also visit secondary Asian-Pacific markets like HK, Singapore and Australia to promote the film. But ultimately, Japan is the main Asian market, until the Chinese population has enough disposable income to make movie-going part of its culture.
For example, the Bond films have made billions of dollars worldwide, but James Bond is surprisingly unknown to most Japanese people. The films have always underperformed there. I remember how the Casino Royale promotion machine just went OTT publicizing the film in Japan, and did extremely well, making some 18M or so. But relative to its population, that total is still really weak, considering that the film made around $25 M in Canada alone, and we have less than a quarter of Japan's population.
Until HK gets the World, let alone Asian premiere treatment from Hollywood, it's a secondary market at best. It just lacks the population to support that much attention. Hell, The Dark Knight may have filmed in HK, but Japan still has a greater chance of holding a World Premiere event in June due to its potential for growth.

Just got done watching it and didn't notice that. I'll have a second look.
Anyways, all in all I thought Will Smith was fantastic throughout the entire movie. Perhaps the use of CGI zombies instead of real people took a lot of potential out of it but it was solid none the less.
Anyone who says Will Smith did a poor job is a fool.

horrible movie! i guess there won't a sequel after he blew himself up LOL
that josh harnett 30days of nite was WAY better then this movie!
2 out of 5 stars for i am legend
What, are you serious?
30 Days of Night was an abomination. I saw it with 4 friends, and we were laughing through out the movie. The vampire talk was downright silly. The producers didn't even care enough about the movie to realize **** SPOILER**** that they killed off the bald guy in that muffin muncher machine and then he was watching the final showdown not 3 minutes later, fully intact ****SPOILER****
I Am Legend was an amazing movie because it spent a huge amount of time on building up the characters and really bringing you into the story. ***SPOILER*** When he had to strangle his dog to death because she got infected it was absolutely heart wrenching. The only thing they ****ed up, imo, was that they should have just ended the movie when he tries to commit suicide and the bright light goes on after his car gets flipped over. Because of the multitude of connotations that bright light could have been, I think that stopping right at that point would have made the movie far better. It wouldn't have involved the mediocre zombies nearly as much and wouldn't have bothered with other people. ***SPOILER***.

Ya I did. I thought one of the zombies had dressed up as him at first, then I thought it was just my imagination because he was driving by. But after the shocker a few minutes later, I realized it was because Robert was hallucinating.

WOW..this thread is so spoiler ridden.
There's a couple things i didnt understand.
SPOILER:
Where did Anne and that kid come from?? NYC is an island and they broke all the bridges and sealed the area shut.
How did they survive 3 years without getting killed by those mutanted humans?
When he was getting revenge for his dog dying, why was he trying to kill them on a pier?? Thats like suicide since you can easily fall into the water.

I was flippin' thru the channels in Hong Kong early this afternoon and Will Smith made a message to the viewers in HK, speaking in Cantonese. I cracked up and had a good laugh. he basically said "hello, dai ga ho! ngo hai Will Smith. (Hello, everybody! I'm Will Smith) I hope you all come out and see I Am Legend".

I felt there was too much character development which led to nothing. Many moments throughout the movie, I thought it was amping up for something, but it didn't. The movie almost felt un-eventful. It was a decent flick - ending was kind of a let down.
Hopefully it did justice to the book.

Though Will Smith performance was good, the movie fell short. It was boring. Castaways was far better than this crap for a standalone movie.

I agree. There was a buildup to nothing much. It seems the director just wanted to give a quick ending. Some unexplained stuff left questions in the viewers mind as well. It had its moments, but there was too much overlap with other movies, which left little uniqueness to the movie.

it was alright...and definitely better than 28 Weeks Later...but 28 Days Later was better.
There's a pretty good screener on the web already (1 week after for Oscars)...and it'll definitely hurt sales.

theres a rumour going around that there was a lot of footage that was cut out of the movie (about 1 hour full) A lot of that should be released on the DVD, im hoping this includes the alternate ending.
But seriously there are so many holes in the story, some stuff just doesnt make sense at all.

Well I just watched it and overall I think it's a great movie. The ending was a let down and there are a couple unsolved questions but overall I really enjoyed it.
This movie made me think about real life. Isn't something like this possible? I know it seems stupid but i mean there have been widespread viruses before and the way how the movie showed it, it seems very realistic.
I can't help but keep imagining that this could happen in real life(not so sure about the zombies but at least the mass evacuation and how a big city could turn out to be like that.)
