I've already played with the MSI K9A2 Platinum. It sucks - especially the BIOS. Don't waste your money on this board.
I've seen the Asus and Gigabyte ones but haven't used them. Haven't seen DFI yet.

BIOS options are extremely limited. The overclocking menu has about 1/3 as many options as the typical P35 motherboard. Onboard devices are also severely lacking in customization. The only options under chipset configuration are switches to turn PCI-E 2.0 on or off. There also isn't an option to control PCI-E slot power, something 790FX is supposedly able to do. The AMD Hammerhead (RD790 reference board) is able to control slot power.
And speaking of PCI-E 2.0, I wasn't able to get it working with a Radeon 3850. It's stuck on 1.0 mode. I've tried a variety of BIOSs, including some beta ones that aren't made public, and none of them solve the problem. I know it's not a problem with the video card because the AMD Hammerhead works just fine with the card.
Who told you it's the best board to run Crossfire X on? A reviewer? I mean...Crossfire X does work on this board, but I don't know what makes this the "best" board for that. For what I've used this board for, I honestly think it sucks.
PS: Here's the AMD Hammerhead.

This is a nice motherboard. The MSI board probably has about 1/20 as many BIOS features as this.

Well when your talkin about the actual alpha hardware your basing everything on its kinda hard to be objective to another motherboard makers spin of the board then.
As for you bein a amd employee, thats hard to prove as wouldn't you have to sign abunch of stuff not to talk about product in public or else you would lose your job ?

Wow you must be some big guys in AMD if you get to sample those board. As far i know, there's only few MSI 790FX around for testing. Usually sample boards are sent to system builder for evaluation.
Incase anyone wonder how a Phenom performed on 790FX board, here's a link

How is it hard to be objective? I'm talking about the MSI retail version and it's missing a lot of features other retail boards in the same market have. It's missing features that are supposed to be advantages of the 790FX chipsets, such as controlling slot power. It either has it or it doesn't. It's not like I'm purposely avoiding eye contact with it in the BIOS.
I also have the Asus and Gigabyte boards, and both are better than the MSI. Hammerhead is still the best though.

Competitive Analysis and Chipset Marketing divisions get all the new goodies on the market :D

Probably because I bought the parts in my sig before I started working there.
But hey, I've come clean and said it this time. Before, when I was dropping hints here and there about RV670, people didn't doubt me too often. Now that I come out and say it, you folks don't believe me anymore. Doesn't matter. Just don't come crying to me after you buy your MSI board and find out that it sucks just like I described. I'm not going to "prove" whether I really work at ATI or not, since if you're truly set on doubting everything I show you, then there's just no point. It's the internet after all.

I don't know what's worse... QA or EPR. A couple of people I eat lunch with do EPR's and it sounds really crappy. I'm not going to say what my position is, because then people will constantly PM me for information that I'm not allowed to give out...

Hi, how is the overclockability on Asus & Gigabyte mobo?
I don't know, since I haven't tried overclocking. I only have access to a few Phenoms and I'm not supposed to be using overclocked CPUs for the kind of work I do. There's also the risk of wrecking the Phenoms, which is very very bad at this point. It's a scarce resource on this side of the border.

Interesting read, thanks!
It's good to know that the AM2 users wont have to buy a new motherboard and could just upgrade the cpu.
The "AMD OverDrive" look fun too, great for ocing I bet!
So here's the question, since the AM2 boards are cheap nowadays.
Is it wise to buy a AM2 board...let's say...M2A-VM for around $50 and slap on a Phenom when it comes out? I doubt i'll get into a crossfire because 1)You have to buy 2 or 4 video cards = spend alot of money which defeats the whole purpose of Phenom 2) Energy Efficiency = bigger power supply = bigger bills to pay.

hmmm not realy ...... eventualy you have to get a motherboard, also 2 3870's & 790fx motherboard can be done for under $700 before tax's. Also don't need big azz power supply cause of the energy reduction on the motherboards & videocards, only would need higher if ya planned on doin more then 2 videocard crossfire or 2870 X2's in crossfire mode.

That's great. They have one page dedicated to motherboards and didn't post a single BIOS picture. But hey, I guess that's still a lot more credible than someone who has used the MSI motherboard and knows what the BIOS is like, and all the features it's missing.

But did MSI say they would add bios updates with the missing features later? A motherboard with a crippled bios will be dead in the water as far as sales when others like ASUS have the features enabled.

The BIOS that shipped with the first samples of the retail-version board (the one that Tomshardware has with "1333 FSB" on the box cover) had a Hypertransport multiplier setting. The BIOS posted on MSI's website right now doesn't. Then I got a new beta BIOS and it has that feature again. To be honest, I have no clue what the hell MSI is doing with their BIOSs, or what they plan on doing later.
MSI hasn't promised any major changes to the BIOS in the future, nor have they admitted any "missing features."

Definitely unimpressed by Phenom, the 'old' Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 beats the 9700 in every real world benchmark ( except Winrar ) and most synthetic benchmarks, while being sold for the same price and using the same TDP ( 95W ) as the 9500 and 9600.
This CPU might be good for people looking to just upgrade their CPU, but I am looking at building a complete system.

well actually ATI chipsets have done better then Nvidia in the S939 line :P in terms of performance and overclocking!!, BUT NO MORE, its amazing its like them joining up ruined things up even more, at this point I would say stay away from AMD, right now you can get an Intel Board & Processor cheaper, just overclock and you get amazing performance, ironic because this is exactly what AMD accomplished when AthlonXP's came out :P, now its Intels turn, Intel has never been cheap imo until now.
