outlook express.....where's the messages???

Outlook express 6, IE 7. Something happened where the emails will download, the subjects are shown, there is a long delay while trying to preview the message, and then a blank message screen. What's happening to the messages? I tried to compact the folders, a new identity, exporting and importing the messages(went way to fast, don't believe the messages were really exported, maybe just the subject lines. The importing failed!) Downloaded an outlook express shareware repair program and it went through its motions but at the end outlook express couldn't show these messages either.
Any other suggestions? How about reinstalling outlook express? Will this import all the old messages. I tried to do a system restore but it only had a point listed of two days prior and this happened before that.

Any help? It's much appreciated.
