Hi guys,

Can I obtain a T4 slip for 2007 having worked for only the last month of this year? Does it matter how long you have to work for in a certain year or what? I'm in university and I work, but I only get paid in cash part-time. If I find a proper job within the last month..can get my T4 for this year? Any info on this matter would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Idris

2 points:

1) Just because you don't receive a T4 doesn't relieve you of an obligation to report income paid 'in cash'. Just because your employer doesn't follow the law doesn't mean that you shouldn't.

2) Sometimes employers will pay you for work performed in 2007, actually in January of 2008. You should make an explicit request to payroll to make sure you are paid in 2007, for work performed in 2007.

I hear you pitz, but can't I recieve a T4 for 2007 if I do get a proper job before this year ends? Like Best Buy? General Labour?

Why not? If you earn income that is paid to you in 2007, then your employer is obliged to give you a T4 for 2007.

For your cash earnings for the rest of the year, you can just declare them as earned income on the appropriate parts of the tax return.

All earned income, whether it shows on a T4 or not, creates RRSP room.
