I'd say crap router but you would only know by trying another router.

Some of the Asus routers will take 3rd party firmware like the Linksys.

Screwy router?

Is the router at default settings or have you been playing with settings such as Flow Control and QoS?

True that, I've got some old ASUS junker that's running DD-WRT, it's mint.

If it's a torrent with lots of connections. that's normal. A consumer router can only go so fast with hundreds of ip's to sort. If you're downloading a single large file from say microsoft or apple, then something's severely wrong. Go to a major website and download a big file like a High Def video sample and time your downloads. Should be as fast with the router than without.

I think the best way is to check the download speed with some speedtest sites.
