14% GST + PST on most products.
On certain - a duty will also apply.
Look around for the FAQ for clarification.

For Canadians, they can only order cds, dvds, and books and
NO, there is no duty /GST/PST/ handling fee or anything else because the items are shipped to the Mississauga aand reshipped using Canada Post.

LonsesomeDove correctly points out that there are only some things that Amazon.com will let you buy - when you choose your shipping address it will tell you if it is an item that is deliverable to said address. By calling what you want to get "hardware", I'm guessing it will be disallowed. You may want to consider using one of the U.S. mail forwarding companies listed on these forums...

Hopefully Amazon.ca or either Amazon.com will start allowing us to have a similar site as amazon.com. I would be in heaven shopping. When I was in the states, amazon.com came in handy and always could find awesome deals.
As to the OP, you are able to purchase cds, movies & books duty and tax free via Amazon.com ( you have to pay shipping). Sometimes you are able to get a better deal even with shipping and conversion rate ( now that we higher) then ordering from our own Amazon.ca.
If you purchase via Amazon.ca you will have to pay appropriate taxes ( Gst/Pst) on all purchases, and sometimes you can get free shipping if its over i think $39
Hardware, furniture, bath accessories, household items and tools to name are few are not able to be bought via Amazon.com and shipped to a Canadian address :(

On one of my Amazon.com orders a while ago, I did get charged tax + Canada Post processing fee. But that was the exception to the rule of thumb that Amazon.com orders slip under the radar of the customs folks and are not charged tax.

I recently bought a wireless media player from amazon.com and it shipped to me no problem but I had to pay duties on it. I was going to buy the model down but it could not be shipped to my address. So i guess it depends what you buy.

This really sucks, i found a good looking wine tower on Amazon.com and actually emailed the seller to see how much it will cost to ship to Canada. Guess it's a moot point now. Anyone knows how to get around this ? A similar wine tower here in Ottawa is double the price, why can't we have affordable and stylish furniture?

That media player was probably from some other seller that lists through amazon.com.
Amazon itself would not ship these things to Canada, but its other sellers might do it and their shipments do not go through the same logistics network that amazon's own shipments use.

Look for a mail forwarding service. I use http://www.packageexpress.com/Home.aspx for my amazon.COM stuff...have it shipped there and when they receive it, they send me an email. I have them mail it to me. Works well, and they are reasonable in price. On items that are great deals in the US, it makes sense to use.

Bob can you give me a quick low-down on this. I will continue to do some more research but it seems like you have done this before
So I am looking to buy a wine-tower from Amazon.com. The shipper quotes $64.09 shipping to that website you show me which is in Washington State. I am not going to pick that up obviously because I am in Ottawa so PackageExpress will have to send it over to me, at whatever rates they tell me I guess, so basically I will have to pay shipping twice
After all is said and done, I think it's cheaper for me to buy that wine tower here in Canada but for something else where there's substantial savings and less shipping fee, I will consider this
Thanks

I know that there are some service operating out of Niagra area as well as some further east than that. There are services that just will accept a package for you and you have to travel down to USA and pick it up... and then there are services that will forward to you as well. Do a search for USA address...that's where I found out about these places.. http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20166 will give you a start.
It really depends on what you want shipped. Such a large item as a wine rack could just be way too expensive to double ship. May not be bad if you live close to a border and can scoot down and bring it back with you....

If you live in Vancouver and are able to make it down to Blaine, there's a store called Hagen's that offers the same sort of service that packageexpress.com offers: you use Hagen's address as your own shipping address, and the store will charge you $2 per package (under 50 lbs) and $1 per phone call. So, theoretically, if two packages arrive the same day and they call you, when you pick up it'll cost you $5 USD. Again, this is only if you're near the US border and obviously won't help you if you're in Calgary, but 1) gas is always cheaper in Washington than BC, and 2) you save a *ton* of cash if you purchase a lot of stuff online. Depending on the item, the price difference between A.com and A.ca can be astronomical (i.e. Criterion DVDs).
