Hi guys, I'm just a student interested in investing in some stocks. Nothing large, probably around $2000 worth or so. I'm completely new to this though, so any pointers, tips or sites you reccomend I read before trying this out? :cheesygri
edit: sorry, i'll be a lil more specific. How do I get started? I really don't know how at all. Thanks lol

A few weeks ago, I would have said dump it all into pumpkin futures, but the market seems to have tanked for some reason...

First of all, you need to get a basic understanding of investing and financial matters in general. If you only have 2K, you probably should not be buying stocks directly (I think you need 10 to 20K before it makes sense to buy individual stocks). Instead, consider Exchange Traded Funds or a low-fee mutual fund to start.
What is more important it to start educating yourself about investments. Check out the following:

2. Overview of Finanacial Planning

3. Financial Forum for Canadians (spend some time reading the beginners section)

There are also several books you can read on the subject, but start with the above.

After the pumpkin future crash of Nov 1 I noticed a spike in candy cane futures, I am going to ride this one until I make back my losses (only early January!) Wish me luck!

Turkey Futures will yield a greater return. I have a feeling they'll skyrocket twice, by the end of the year, somewhere before Nov 22, and again before Dec 25th!

You can start with 2K. With QT and 4.95 fees, you only need to profit 0.5% to break even. Regardless, even ETFs require the same fees; granted, you get the benefit of diversification.

I've posted these links before.
I think there should be a sticky here - the bulk of likely future questions would be covered.

Try questrade.com . I'm using that. It works out good for doing small trades --- 1cent a share or a minimum of $4.95 .
I'm a student myself (3rd year) , and I have 10K of disposable income to invest. However, I don't have the balls to jump in right now cause of the market's volatility.
I going to buy and hold, but I want to buy at a good price !
Currently looking at the following companies
RIMM
AAPL
CTRP
BIDU
GOOG
STV
tell me what you guys think ..
I think you'll be banned on RFD

The humour in this thread is just amazing! It should be reclassified in "Off Topic" for the benefit of others!!
