Thanks OP, just ordered. I have been looking for an entry level core2 that I can upgrade and this fits the bill perfectly, and having the e4500 at the $350 level it's a steal.

If you are thinking about I would hurry - you have to subtract 3 things from original configuration and past experience has shown that Dell often closes these holes once they realize it.

Here's some info about the E4500 processor (from google search)..seems like runs at super low voltage
================
Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 M0 Stepping CPU Review
9, 10 or 11 multiplier (Intel E4300, E4400 and E4500) is the question; a One Dollar question. That is the price difference at Geeks Computer Parts at time of this article was written. I believe all of the three processors are winners if they could run at 3.2GHz at slightly above default voltage. I'd rather take the E4500 because it runs at a mere 1.185 volt at higher default speed.

Basically you join 2 pin with conductive ink (e.g defogger repair kit) and it changes the default fsb from 200mhz to 266mhz. Haven't try it yet (Trying to disable the *&/"! speedstep)
and yes, 2.93Ghz at default Vcore might be a little hard but we'll see....

When I opened up the case, there were 4 slots for the RAM:
slot 1 (WHITE clips)
slot 2 (BLACK clips)
SPACE
slot 3 (WHITE clips)
slot 4 (BLACK clips)
I've read that you should always have the same amount of RAM and in PAIRS for best performance, but the alternating coloured clips is throwing me off...
Do I pair them up slot 1 and 2? or pair them by colour of the clips?
Also, I have 2 x 512mb DDR2-533 that are not being used...what happens if I mixed different speeds, and sizes together? For example,
slot 1 (1gb DDR2-667)
slot 2 (1gb DDR2-667)
slot 3 (512mb DDR2-533)
slot 4 (512mb DDR2-533)

Mine also came with the 1gb in slot 1 (white)
Yesterday, I added another 1gb in slot 2 (black), started up no problem, and it's working...so not sure why yours didn't work
but I'm still not sure about this white/black coloured clips thing
Here's a tip... my dell came with 1 gb stick in slot 1 (white). NOw,
I got an extra 1 gb stick (identical as dell one..), put it in slot 2...pc didnt boot...4 beeps...took it out and put it in slot 3 (now slot 1 n 3 are both whites as u know)....pc booted beautifully...no probs...
Maybe my slot no2 was at fault or something, but still....

Question:
I have 2 x 512mb DDR2-533mhz that are not being used...what happens if I mixed different speeds, and sizes together? For example,
slot 1 (1gb DDR2-667mhz)
slot 2 (1gb DDR2-667mhz)
slot 3 (512mb DDR2-533mhz)
slot 4 (512mb DDR2-533mhz)
would my two 1gb be reduced to 533mhz?

need a so so video card for this system between $100-200
I put in 2 stick of 1gig ram (533) and its load to vista
but then roxio(sp) gets an error and reboots the system
ram is fine cause I pulled from my old system
If I leave the ram that came with the computer 2x512 everything boots up fine
I pretty much stumped on this one
thanks

Did u see the white and black slots...make sure u have identical rams on matching colors..(say identical 1 gb on the whites and 512 on the blacks..
My setup is now running in dual channel mode as per bios...with two identical 1 gb in slots 1 & 3 (both whites)
SO you may want to move one of the dell 512 to slot 3, if they are in slots 1 &2, then put urs in slots 2 &4, or vice versa..and see what happens... (or even try with one of the 512 u got in slots 2 or 4 (while dell ones in 1 &3)
Hope u got the idea...need a so so video card for this system between $100-200

anyone got the BSEL mod to work on this machine? Also since the fsb increases to 266, do I have to make sure the memory matches up as well?

Got this deal (thanks, OP)$350, plus 3 sticks of Corsair Value Select DDR2 PC5300 1GBRAM $60=4GB total, Sparkle 400W PS $40, BFG 8800GT OC2 $260 = $710 for a computer that can play the latest games.
Video card fits and it's pretty tight in there. Make sure you load the RAM in first then put in your video card. I thought it would be pretty warm as the case isn't the roomiest, but temps are 30C idle. Haven't loaded any games yet so I don't know how it's going to be when stressed, but looks good so far.
