I. got. screwed.
and I hope you won't be too. Basically they refused to terminate my account so they can continue to charge my credit card. It's a long story... you can read it here:

Correctly me if I am wrong, you were trying to terminate an account that belongs to your cousin, who used your credit card during the sign up. And when your cousin's account got auto renewed, your credit card got charged, you figured it is 1&1's fault and got all upset?
Well, no offense, but I don't understand why you are blaming 1&1 for your mistake (or your cousin's for that matter).
By the way, I have nothing to do with 1&1.

There have been horror stories about 1 & 1 for years. Common ones used to centre around the company holding your domain registration hostage.

Actually you have a point there, but no I am not upset with 1&1 about that. I take full responsibility for the auto-renewed charges, BUT.
I am upset because:
1. I provided sufficient proof that I am the card holder and they still refused to cancel the account.
2. They charged me more by delaying the cancellation.
3. They charged me once again 30 days after the so-hard-to-get-termination.
4. Then they say I never asked to terminate.
5. They don't want to talk to me anymore and I feel lonely.

yeah, when you ask the companies to do something that are not their daily routine, things can get pretty messed up....
Good that everything is OK...for now:D

Dispute the charges on your credit card and let the credit card company know that you are not authorizing any charges from that company and to not allow any to be let thru. :) If that company is not helping you then your credit card will fix it

My credit card company is willing to dispute it, but the risk associated with the far outweighs the benefit.
1&1 Internet is known to use collection agencies for almost all unreceived payments. I'll list a few common cases I've dug up.
Payment of (<$20)didn't go through with the credit card due to the wrong expiry date. 1&1 sent it to collection agency. The fee doubled after the added handling fee. The account holder tried to pay 1&1, but 1&1 refused to take payment, saying everything is with the collection agency and they can do nothing.
Account holder terminated the account, but 1 &1 continued to charge the credit card. Account holder filed for dispute with credit card company. Charges reversed. 1&1 sent it to collection. Collection agency harasses account holder.
Account holder failed to make payments on time. 1&1 sent to collection. Account holder sent payment to collection agency. Collection agency failed to cash the cheque and continue to harass the account holder all the while his domain being locked.
I am on the other side of the world and I rather not deal with the collection agency at the moment. You know what I mean..? I love to fight them, but the thought of them harassing my family is just too much.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience but it sounds like it wasn't entirely their fault...
I have been using 1&1 for over four years now and have never had an issues with them at all, everything is always smooth as silk...

Oh, if you read that I wrote then you'd see that I had pretty good experience with them for my own account, from start to finish. I paid for my cousin's irresponsibility, but whatever transpired after the 1st cancellation request was entirely their fault. Their internet reps can never seem to give an straight answer and it's been over 1 week since my last few emails to them, still no reply.
Even though I have full access to the account and did what they asked me to do, they still refuse to communicate. I don't think anyone should have to deal with this non-existent customer service.

I was part of their free trial a few years back...
the only issue i ever had was when my credit card expired and they tried to charge the old # but it was resolved without much pain.
Its been over for about a year and i was thinking of signing up again however i am going to weigh my options a little more.
P.S. not to drive the point home but loaning out credit cards never ends good... with prepaid cards available just loan out cash if anything at all!
