I got a call asking for my dad. I usually take the calls for him so it doesn't waste his time... Mostly telemarketers and solicitors.
Heres how the convo went
them: May i speak to Mr.(my dad)
me: What is this regarding?
them: If hes not available tell him to call this number back and give this acct#. He'll know exactly what it is.
me: What is this call regarding though?
Them: just tell him the number and he'll know exactly what it is
I called back pretending to be my dad. My dad isnt very good with these things... I dont want him to get scammed so i usually take these calls.
me: Hi, did you call me earlier?
them: yes are you _____ ?
me: yes i am... What is this call regarding? I tried asking you what it was earlier but you wouldnt tell me anything. It seems very random that i got a msg for a phone number & account number claiming that i know exactly what it is when i dont.
them: Yes... Before i continue, were you born on 1957?
me: I cant release any private information until you tell me what this call is regarding
them: I need to prove who this is before i can tell you anything
me: I need you to tell me what this is about before i can continue
them: Listen... dont get smart with me! this is exactly where the call ENDS if your going to give me this kind of attitude
*click*
This call seemed VERY shady...
Has anyone else gotten calls like this asking for personal information with NO mention of what type of product/service they are offering?

whenever somebody calls asking for my parents, i just say they're not available. i don't want to have to go through their endless talks about deals that they have or whatnot.. if it's really important they'll call back again. and usually they don't.

I don't give telemarketers enough time to scam info from me. First thing I ask is if its a solicitation call, and if it is (or if they lie, and I find out it is) I just hang up on them like anyone with half a brain.

better watch out tho... If people know stuff like your date of birth, address, they can take over your credit card!
I cancelled a credit card that i threw out... and the only verification they needed for access is Date of birth, and address... Could have easily said "can you send a new card to my new address?" and given out that info...

What kind of idiot credit card supplier is that? Bob's Credit Cards and Knick Knacks?
I can give you my date of birth and address but you still need the answers to 3 secret questions, my SIN, my current place of employment including my phone number, my cell number and month and year I received my first card.
No wonder you threw that insecure piece of garbage out, I would too.
I call BS on that claim though from my experiences simply because if someone could do that, no card is secure. Each and every company I do business with knows that info and many individuals too.
Back to the OP, I always ask the same questions. If they don't answer, I tell tham thanks for wasting my time and call back later when you want to co-operate, then hang up.

any legitimate call will give out information as to why they are calling.
It doesnt hurt them to release the info of where the call is coming from as it does not contain and personal/private information.
they could have easily said "This is Rogers..." or "This is Scotiabank..." etc...

Lol, you guys are all hypocrites. You all tell me to respect free speech and let UP post oddball topics, yet it's not acceptable for me to post my own free speech protesting against his obviously attention grabbing threads. Free speech isn't just for the ones you like; it's for everybody. Otherwise, you guys are no better than Mr. Bush who thinks he knows what's best for everyone. Pure hypocrisy.

Because there was no substance to your reply. There's free speech but with responsibility. At least take the initiative to be as detailed as the OP was or else you just come across as lazy and pot-stirring.
Or how about you talk about your own personal experiences relating to the topic at hand in more then 2 sentences ok?
