Just got my 3rd telemarketer call today via an autodialer. I thought these things were illegal in Canada? Anyone know if there's a simple way to report the calling number?
Sure am glad I worked at home today to avoid distractions.

Auto dialers and predictive dialers are quite legal in Canada.
There's a good write-up about it here:

What _is_ not permitted, is dialing random numbers. The numbers dialed must be from an actual list of names and numbers.

Only by screening your calls with your answering machine ...Record this on to your answering machine's out going message ..
WAV file of "out of service" ring tone (http://sbaratz.home.mindspring.com/MISC/telezapper_SIT.wav)
This will trick predictive dialers into thinking your number is junk. Make sure not to leave too much of a pause with your message after the tones so as not to confuse the callers you want to reach you.

Does that really work? The phone must still ring before the answering machine picks it up, so once it rings I'm sure you are already added to the computers list of known numbers.
My house we get at least 3 telemarketers calling every day. Drives me nuts.90% of the time the number will show up in the call display, but with unknown name. I'll then search the numbers on google and low and behold it's some scam telemarketers. We never buy anything on the phone either. When I call back these numbers, nobody ever picks up.
Rogers home phone has an option to block all private and unknown numbers for $4 a month. Which is totally stupid because it should be free. I have no choice so I'm thinking about going for it. From the research I've done on the numbers that continue to call us, there is no way to stop them. If by some miracle you do manager to speak to someone about getting removed from their list, they will just remove your number but add it to 10 other telemaketing schemes.

The tones tell the dialer the number is out of service, the dialer then discards the number... and yes the phone does have to ring and the answering machine does have to pick up for this to work.

That music or ring tone does not play when you dial wrong number in canada.
However if you were in America it would do it. Every times states if you dial wrong number it would play that.
So I do not those Autodialer how well it would work in Canada. since they do not use this system in Canada

I heard about those, they function as "phone tazers" and can actually cause physical harm to the person/machine on the dialing end.

Ummm.. Yeah.
What the poster is talking about is something like a "telezapper."
They emit SIT tones when you pick the phone. They may work on older predictive dialers, but for the most part, they don't work anymore.
(do a google search on SIT tones and you'll understand what they are)
