Hey guys,

I have a quick question. How do you get your pet to pee or poo less? I have a small puppy and he does his business in a corner in the washroom with newspaper. However, he tends to go a little too often. Any input to help reduce his tendency to pee and poo?

Thanks

What goes in must come out. In order to stop what comes out, you need to go to the source and stop what's going in.

Puppies will do that. They're like babies. I'll never get another one. Too much work.
But basically at a certain age, you have to start taking him outside to do his business, unless you plan to litter train him like a cat (my uncle did this with their SMALL dog).

Do a google search or go to the bookstore. Toilet traing/curbing dogs has been written about a thousand times.

Puppies will have to pee/poo often because their bladder's small and can't hold much fluid for a long time. Take the puppy to where you want him/her to pee (i.e. pee pad or outside) every few hours. But take the puppy from the crate directly to the washroom area. Once he/she does the business, rewarde him/her with positive phrases and treats so he/she knows that it's good to pee/poo in the specific area.

What kind of food are you feeding him? Are you leaving him lots of water at night? Some dog food aren't really great and your dog will tend to poop more.

Potty training should only take a week max. for most dogs and puppies. You have to be attentive and notice when the pup is sniffing for a spot to go. It is up to you to know when he has to go and allow him out or take him to the spot that you want him to do his business. When he goes in the proper spot , praise him like he has made a real accomplishment. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Always reinforce good behavior. Your puppy's success depends on your attentiveness.

Thanks for all the input. However, I guess I've misused the word puppy. He's really small (10 pounds) but is actually over 1 year old. He's trained to go to the washroom and pee or poo in one spot set up for him. However, he tends to go too often because he's got the freedom to do so.

People say dogs always need water so we have it readily available for him at all times. Is that a myth and should I only put out water for him periodically?

Thanks

maybe its just me, but i think pooping a lot is not a bad sign, unless the poop he does is abnormal looking ;p, i think it just means his digestive system is working really well. Anyway I could be wrong, just my thoughts..

it is funny how pets doesnt wipe their ass meaning once they poo/pee, you can smell a weird odor from them

maybe u can try shutting the door so he cant gain access to his 'bathroom'
he may then learn to do it less
