Family day = STUPID
They just take a day from our end of the school year and replace it. So basically, we end up with an extra school day at the end of the school year where our summer is 1 day short.

Hey little boy, most of us aren't in school so we're going to love having a day off from WORK. Hope the shock isn't too much when you become an adult and summer vacation becomes a distant memory.

Some students can't seem to get around the fact that the working population gets a day off from work. It's really the only holiday between New Year's and Easter.
Reminds me of JFK's quote: "ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country." People are really too self-centered these days.

Too many people getting divorced today for illegimate reasons so I don't see it working. In the 60s/70s you could cheat/abuse your spouse (note: i do not condone such activities) and the family would stay together for the kids sake. Today anything can lead to divorce. People get divorced over such small matters these days its unbelievable.

this is so true, but WTH, who cares what it's call?
the important thing is we have ONE extra day off with salary
that's the only thing counts.

Just to not ruin the reputation of students here... as some tend to be a little too whiny.
Unfortunately the new holiday lands on my reading week too. However, I'll be glad that when I start working there'll be an extra day off. Sometimes things don't always turn out perfectly.

Well considering Alberta has had family day for quite some time now it seems to work out pretty good.
Much worse holiday names: Heritage day here in Alberta. Or what about Bank Holiday in the UK? Boxing day is pretty dumb as well.

The premise of this thread was to see if Family Day was legit. Well it's law in Ontario, and has been before this thread was created.
End of discussion.

Federally, there are 11 designated paid holidays and despite the addition of a day off in February, our collective agreements do not provide for an additional day off
They already have more holidays than a regular person. So too bad.. Use your own vacation days if you really want to.

In the USA, we call that day "President's Day" since Washington, Lincoln and a number of other Presidents have Birthdays right around that time in February.
Maybe Ottawa should do the same thing in a month where several Prime Ministers had their Birthdays and call it Prime Minister's Day.
