Awesome deal on the BEST DSL modem on the market! I bought this modem last year for $100, worth every penny!

This modem supports ADSL 2+ buy this and you'll be set when Bell decides to upgrade all their lines.

Log into modems setup when you get it and check the VPI/VCI settings as every one I have got lately are set to 8/35 . If you are in Ontario, you need to change this to 0/35. Price is decent with shipping included. They don't have much of a profit margin on this.

For those who are interested - Canada Computers is still selling 2Wire 2700 DSL modems for $20. (refurb). They are a pretty good deal: ADSL2+ & G.DMT capable, 802.11 B/G wireless, 4 port wired router built in. User GUI is excellent. Adjustable wireless power output.

not a hot deal at all.
any dsl user knows this modem goes for 50 - 65 at any computer hardware store.

http://infonec.com/site/main.php?module=detail&id=350362

they have been selling this at 65.00 for the past 1 1/2 years.

and as for best del modem i would have to disagree. this modem does not have spectral response and its error correction is mediocre.

this modem is ok. u want a good modem get a cisco.

Gentek, gvc is just distributor of this 516 modem. I just got a 516 v6 from Infonec last week. NO gvc, gentek wording on the box anywhere. Just says Thomson Speedtouch on the box. I have pics if anyone wants to see.

Also there is a cool app called DMT for this modem that gives great info on the modem and dsl stats. btw not hot deal. $65 for this modem for a while now.

Pardon my ignorance, but would this work well with TekSavvy's DSL service? I'm thinking of switching from Rogers to TekSavvy and I would like to get a good modem but I admittedly know very little about DSL. Would I have to go through a lengthy set-up process? Would it be easier (save an hour of my time and hence be worth the extra $$) to buy the modem pre-configured from TekSavvy?

Thanks

I've been using the 2wire router/modem from CC with Teksavvy since I got the service in March. It's been flawless for me, even under heavy BT loads. The wireless signal strength is also good. Can't beat $20.

Remember first thing to do when you get the modem is loggin to it
configuration> configuration> Web Browsing Interception > Disable it.
That will fix up your upload problem.

Other than that its a play on firmware.
5.4.x.x and the UK 6.1.4 have been known to be the best two.
Also the latest one 6.2.x is good.

Yes it would work great. I have the same DSL modem that I bought from teksavvy close to a year ago and its been great. Actually improved my line compared to my old modem.

Its pretty easy to setup BUT if you really dont want to config it yourself then ya maybe buy from teksavvy. But of course if you do have problems you can just call teksavvy and they will tell you how to set it up no problem.

Funny thing is that I cancelled my Rogers a couple of days ago and they told me to just bring in the modem when I was done with the service. Since then, I tested the speed of my connection and it has gone from 2000 kbps to 6700 kbps.

Great move to teksavyy. Remember if you reffer somebody to the service you can get $1 off your monthly bill. Its pretty good I'm paying $30/month with taxes so far.

plymouthhater...thanks for the link to this 2wire 2700 DSL modem ...it looks like a feature-rich modem for the price.

I have ordered one and look forward to trying it out. I apparently am in a DSL trunk in which my DSL card profile at Bell can only be upgraded to 1.5 mb card max ...I guess Im too far away from the Bell Central office to get the ultra high speeds (or even the regular 3 mb high speed for that matter !!)

Im hoping this modem may slightly improve my speeds ? For $20 plus a reasonable shipping fee, it's worth a shot !! I will just have some learning to do for setting up this new modem. . . anyone have any feedback on ease of setting up this 2Wire 2700 DSL modem from Canada Computers ?

Thanks again for the post

I currently have my old speedstream modem (using it with Teksavvy) and sometimes the internet just dies out using my dlink router (WBR1210 or something) and I have to reset the router.

Any comments on how well it works as a router?

no what I mean is using a seperate Wireless Router like a Linksys is better imo. I'm using a Linksys WRT54GL The model does matter because it will tell you if it can be flashed with 3rd party firmware or not.

I basically turned my $70 router into a $300 router with all the options that flashing it with DD-WRT firmware. I dont thin kyou can flash a 2wire modem or at least i have never seen it with 3rd party firmware.

As for your problem try going to the dlink site and flashing it with the latest firmware, sounds like you could have the same problem many routers have that when you use programs like Torrents and other p2P programs it does not get rid of old connections and it overloads your router so then it resets. By flashing my router I got rid of that problem.

If the modem can't detect the dsl signal and your current modem does then the odds are pretty good the new modem is a dud.

I ordered the 2wire 2700 dsl modem/wireless router a few weeks back and have now received it and set it up. It was fairly straight foward in setting up.

I would estimate that my DSL download speeds have increased about 15%...I was averaging about 800 kbps and now average about 920 kbps !! So, for this alone...I love this 2wire modem !!

I found the GUI very easy to set up and interact...without even reading the product installation manual I had my network renamed, an encryption key of my own choosing and all stealth settings for firewall protection set up in no time and it passes the Gibson Research Shields Up Testing in all areas !!

My wireless network range is awesome...compared to my old Dlink 524+ wireless router.......and I only have the signal output strength set at 6 out of possible 10 max for signal power output !!

I am so impressed by the 2wire 2700 modem that I have ordered another for a family member

Thanks Plymouthhater for the tip !! I think this is a fantastic and well built modem/wireless router.

Just a thought on your issue.....I found that I had to really push the telephone line plug into the telephone port on the back of the modem....I put it in the first time and the modem could not sync with the DSL signal on the line ....The DSL light just kept flashing and flashing....then, I discovered that the telephone plug was not securely in the port....so, be sure to give it a really good push into the telephone jack port on the back of the modem...you may not even hear it "snap" or "click" as you normally would...mine didn't click even when really pushing it into the telephone port ...I thought at first I had recieived a defective modem...but turned out that I didn't have the telephone jack plugged in completely to connect with the inside metal contacts on the modem..

Oh BTW, you can download the installation manual for this 2wire 2700 modem here =======> http://www.2wire.com/?p=266

If this doesn't work, then Im afraid your modem is likely defective and hopefully you can obtain a replacement without a hassle.

I ended up buying this modem Speedtouch 516 from a local computer store in Ontario - called Infonec computers. It ended up being the same price but I was able to buy it right away instead of waiting for it to arrive at my door.

I've been using it for a month now (first with Bell Sympatico and now TekSavvy) and I've had no issues with it. I did have minor difficulties setting it up at first because I didn't expect this modem to have "router-like settings". I used to have Speedstream which was straight plug and play. It worked out in the end and the configuration setup was easy.

Ps.
"Gnet Speedtouch vs Thomson Speedtouch" What I bought from Infonec was being sold as "Gnet Speedtouch". But when I looked at the manual, the CD, the modem...it was Thomson Speedtouch v6. So there's no difference (I worried if there was when I was doing my research about this modem). *shrugs*

Absolutely, the ST516 can be set to bridge mode. I just got one and this is how I am using it. I'm a bit disappointed with it's power consumption, however. I noticed it was quite warm so plugged it into my kill-a-watt and measured that it was consuming a whopping 12W compared with the 2W of the Acanac Lynx modem that it is replacing.

By selecting bridge mode you are specifically instructing the device not to process any IP packets, including the ones to the web interface! You will need to reset it to turn off bridge mode and reactivate the web interface.

For Sympatico you can datafill both your modem/router and your router with the same b1 number and password. Plug your router into one of the lan ports on the modem/router and leave the other ones empty and it will behave as though it is in bridge mode without having to set the modem router to bridge mode.

I've been using 3web cable as my home ISP for a while but I have found their service inconsistent. Although they do not place a bandwidth cap on their 7mbit/768k service, it's ~35/month + tax.

How would you guys rate teksavvy? $40/month for consistent 5mb+ dsl seems worth it to me but I'm just considering my options.

For Sympatico you can datafill both your modem/router and your router with the same b1 number and password. Plug your router into one of the lan ports on the modem/router and leave the other ones empty and it will behave as though it is in bridge mode without having to set the modem router to bridge mode.

will this setup work with tekksavy?

Just found SpeedTouch 516 for $59, http://www.pccyber.com/?v=Product&i=LAN-ST-516
Looks like its only good for Ottawa region folks.

Never bought anything from there before so I dunno how good they are.

By selecting bridge mode you are specifically instructing the device not to process any IP packets, including the ones to the web interface! You will need to reset it to turn off bridge mode and reactivate the web interface.

You sure that is the case? I will have to play around with one tomorrow as I thought you could still access it through the IP address is ( 10.0.0.138 ). You can access the interface also by opening your browser, while NOT being connected to the Internet.

I can sell the modems for the same price, in my town ( Belleville, ON )

Gentek, gvc is just distributor of this 516 modem. I just got a 516 v6 from Infonec last week. NO gvc, gentek wording on the box anywhere. Just says Thomson Speedtouch on the box. I have pics if anyone wants to see.

Also there is a cool app called DMT for this modem that gives great info on the modem and dsl stats. btw not hot deal. $65 for this modem for a while now.

here is box pic of infonec sold 516v6

Purchased the 516 v6 from Infonec for 65.00 in Markham, but am returning it.

I was going to move to Teksavvy but Bell retention kept me on.

Gave me a different service of 7 down .800 up (modem has a n wireless router in it). Two months free and the next 10 months at 29.99. I called back to see if there were caps and there is a 60G combined. (i only use around 20 so no big deal.....

I know that Teksavvy is probably better, but have been with Bell forever and have numerous email addresses that I use. so changing would have been a hassle.

New hardware should arrive next week, will let you know how it works

I was 7 years with rogers and the email addresses kept me there longer than I should have been. Just make gmail accounts and switch over. Once you no longer need your old email addresses you can switch whenever you are ready(well after your contract is up at least). Staying with bell is a bad idea since they won't fix their service unless they lose a lot of customers.

The version and look of DMT on this image has nothing to do with a Thomson ST516 and much less a v6:

If such customizability is required then you want the Conexant-based device from which these statistics were extracted! BEWARE:
only DMT v7.x will work with an ST, to some extent... For a Broadcom Chipset just try the TP-Link TD 8810-A and DMT v8.x instead:

There are NO modem router combinations that Sympatico provide that contain N routers.

Standard residence offering: 2Wire 2701
Standard commercial offering: Siemens 6520

Bell tech said that they have a new piece of hardware that they are sending me. Said it was a combined N router/DSL Modem.

I am still waiting to get it in the mail/courier

Will let you know what they actually send me.....
