Been with them over a year - could not be happier with services for the price.

You get so many bonuses and perks with dreamhost it is unbelievable. They provide many things for free with their hosting other sites charge for. Like streaming servers, Jabber servers, SSH access, unlimited IMAP accounts, WebDav, ... the list goes on and on. Plus the people who work at the place actually own it (it's a co-op) so they give a crap about their customers. And all the people are generally NICE and KNOWLEDGEABLE, unlike the teir 1 techs you get when you contact most hosting providers.

I second that. Pretty solid hosting company at good pricing. Servers may run a tad slower than I wish for. And there are occasionally hiccups in their email servers. But overall, good values for what it offers.

If you need enterprise-grade level of stability, try netnation.

that will determine my download speed

They've had a very crappy rep a few years ago, complete with angry blog posts and an F with the BBB. But I heard things have changed for the better since then.

I've haven't tried Dreamhost myself, but from what my friends have experienced, I wouldn't try them given the chance. Although they haven't been with them in more than a year. Again, apparently they smartened up since then.

EDIT: This is based on VPN and Shared-server experiences.

I posted this in the Netfirms thread as well but if you guys aren't looking to host anything major, then maybe $9 a year is still too much.

I would suggest NearlyFreeSpeech.

I wrote an article about it here: http://www.jonlee.ca/pay-as-you-go-web-hosting/

You basically pay for the resources you use. A dollar can last you a year if it's just a personal site.

So if I transfer 500GB of data to my ftp (dreamhosting) ftp -> ftp, and then I leech (download via ftp) 5TB of that data minus the 500GB of data I already uploaded, Im still paying $10/year?

I just wanna make this clear, if Im getting 5TB of bandwidth that means I can transfer 5TB of bandwidth within the month using my FTP and its fine? Regardless if I consume it in a week?

In order to download 5 TB of data in a month you would have to continuously leech 2 MB/s for 30 days - AKA 16 Mbps. Doubt your connection can even do half of that speed.

It's NOT about promo or referred account, *ANY* previously hosted domain WILL get error. Just send them a support ticket, and they'll fix (add) it, UNLESS it's their policy not to do so for, like you said, promo account, which I have never heard of. I only know that they will reject existing clients (with the same credit card) to sign up as new.

I been waiting for 3 hours but no email whatsoever acknowledging that I subscribed (paid already). I LOVE DREAMHOST SO FAR.
I was on the Netfirms deal just like you until it recently expired. I renewed my domain on them. I was sad and pathetic when I learned the subdomains and gmail (thru google apps) did not work on this domain with free hosting. Unlike you however, my registration was quick and painless. I paid with PayPal. My PayPal confirmation came at 5:34PM and then instantly on the same minute, I got 4 emails regarding account activation, payment, FTP, etc, etc. Very satisfied. With my Netfirms domain pointed at Dreamhost, I now have working subdomains and Gmail on my account.

They did confirm that they don't provide phone support, but if you wanted a call-back: $9.95/mth for 3 calls and only available to US customers!!!! So far no problem. I got my website up in 30 minutes. Simple interface. However, still didn't have time to install other functions like joomla, zencart, etc... Will see. For under $10/year, I am happy!

Don't quote me on it, but the guy at Netfirms told me that I should transfer my domain 30 days before expiry date to be safe (I read somewhere the cutoff date for domain transfer is 15 days). Otherwise, you can't move your domain, but have to renew with your current provider and then wait 60 days before you can do it again. However, you can still subscribe to Dreamhost now for hosting only and setup your website in advance with a subdomain. When you are ready, you then can request the domain transfer.

The truth is, there's NO cutoff date for domain transfer at the registry level; and you can transfer away even when the domain has expired, as long as it's not in RGP (redemption). HOWEVER, MOST registrars have set THEIR OWN cutoff date, some at 30 days in advance. So it would be of your own benefit to transfer away earlier.

Currently, we do not offer PayPal as an initial form of payment. This is
a policy that was implemented due to prevent fraud from occurring with
user's signing up with fraudulent. However, we do offer Google Checkout
as well as check or money order as an alternative method of payment.

If you have any other questions in regards to this matter, please do not

It is not possible to use 5TB per month at all.

I means you are constantly using 10mbit for a month straight. and that would still only equal to be 3300GB. By then they would suspend you for hogging up the resource.

If you plan on using full 5TB, forget about it

I've used them for a few years...the only reason they suck is they do not have any downtime refunds.

They usually have ONE HUGE mother outage that will last a few days "once a year"...so you do get what you pay for.

Other than that, I am happy for what I get for the price. Go for it folks! :)

I have been with them since 1999. (Yes, 8 long years.) And although I have had hosting accounts of all sorts at numerous places over the years, I still a couple of accounts there. Reason? They are still relatively RELIABLE and HONEST.

It's true that there were better days like 5+ years ago, when their uptime is near 100% (I mean consistently > 99.97%); but even during their worst days (about a couple of years ago), I don't recall having any EXTENDED outage that lasted more than 18 hours straight, BECAUSE I couldn't afford staying on a down server for more than that (say 24 hours). Most of their more serious downtime windows are probably a few hours (although it could keep coming back to haunt you for a couple of more days).

But then for those who are thinking of spending only $10 a YEAR, I would recommend going elsewhere, so you won't mess up a good host. :D

Cpanel is much better than what they offer. Their sql management is awful, and their servers are ridiculously oversold (read: slow).

You will need to cancel the account soon to avoid automatic renewal.
If you want to stay with Netfirms then you can go on their free basic hosting plan and renew your domain that way... OR, you can transfer your domain in December (a month before expiry) and transfer your domain over to Dreamhost and have them handle the domain... You can then cancel your account completely with Netfirms after backing up your files and then uploading them all back onto Dreamhost servers.

Umm.... cPanel is HORRIBLE. I would rake Dreamhost's home grown solution ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.

Cpanel is much better than what they offer.
To be fair, CPanel is not bad (of course, it's not perfect either). And with RVSkin, it LOOKS VERY professional and therefore excellent if you have lower tier end-users.

DreamHost's own control panel is not bad either. Some people don't like it because they are "different". The only drawback is that it can't be customized and used for white label reselling purpose.

I need a new host soon. I've been on IXWebhosting for a while now. But I've had certain horrible downtimes. I'm looking at Dreamhost now since it's only $10 for the year, but should I be expecting $10 service too? (Like not very good service? More downtime?)

Another question: Are these guys real registars? Like you can transfer domains in and out of them. So when my account is finished, I can transfer my domain name back to my original registar or new hosting.

Also I was testing out CPanel on MonsterHost.com and CPanel seems horrible compared to the one I use at IXWebhosting. Like, do I have to have a main domain? Because I want to host about 5 websites on one account. And I want them all to be separate. Like I don't want my Add-on Domains folders mixed in with my main domain. That just looks stupid.

Soooo can anyone help?

EDIT: What does this mean? "A single domain registration is included free with any active hosting plan. If the plan becomes inactive at any point during the registration year, you will be charged for that year's registration." I just read this and it really confused me. Makes me worried o_O

IXWebhosting isn't a large tier web hoster... names like GoDaddy, RegisterFly, Netfirms, DreamHost, those are the larger web companies (service is not necessarily better...) I haven't had too much trouble with their hosting thus far and no, they treat this as a $110 hosting plan.

Another question: Are these guys real registars? Like you can transfer domains in and out of them. So when my account is finished, I can transfer my domain name back to my original registar or new hosting.

Yes you can. Why would you want to keep playing around with that though? You can just stick with one registar and keep changing hosts... as long as the DNS and stuff is pointed correctly.

Also I was testing out CPanel on MonsterHost.com and CPanel seems horrible compared to the one I use at IXWebhosting. Like, do I have to have a main domain? No, I'm pretty sure you can host as many websites as you want... just make a new domain for each and have it pointed at your hosting.

A domain is included for free with your account on Dreamhost, as long as you stay with them, your domain costs are non-existant... however, once you cancel hosting with DreamHost, they will charge you the cost of the domain.

I just need a good idea of their uptimes and speed for downloading. I roughly spend about 50GB of bandwidth a month from people downloading my video clips. I want to make sure they won't cut me out for using too much CPU or something. I never break my bandwidth at my other 2 hosts but they've shut down my site before for using "too many resources" on their servers. Although IXWebhosting hasn't done this to me yet, but they've had other downtimes I didn't like.

Yes you can. Why would you want to keep playing around with that though? You can just stick with one registar and keep changing hosts... as long as the DNS and stuff is pointed correctly.

I'm asking because I'm wondering if I register my new domain with them (since I get a free one) will I be able to move it out later. Obviously to my registar that I always use. I own roughly 5 domains right now. 4 are free through hosting and 1 is paid.

No, I'm pretty sure you can host as many websites as you want... just make a new domain for each and have it pointed at your hosting.

I just remember using CPanel before and it really pissed me off how the "Add-on Domain" worked. My Public_html folder would be the root for all the add-ons.

Additional Questions
Do you get a static IP with your main account? Because I'm confused. There's a price for Static IP but I'm thinking it's only for add-on domains? Because why wouldn't they throw in a static IP for the main account? I might be using this hosting for an Online Store so I need that Static IP. But I guess it isn't such a huge cost.

OK - I will give you guys that. I have never really approached dreamhost from he POV of a reseller since I have never done that.

From an export end-user POV however, Dreamhosts panel is much better and more powerful.

In my small business we've used several of these large low-cost web hosts, including Dreamhost, iPowerweb, and Lunarpages, plus a number of smaller and less well known ones, and some local ones here in Canada. My observation is that all of them work fine until you have a problem - then you can expect near-zero service from any of them.

This is simple economics - it costs very little to set up and run a web hosting service, but providing competent and responsive customer service is expensive and difficult for any industry, let alone one where you are operating with minimal investment and cutthroat margins.

If you run into a problem that's serious, you can report it and hope for it to be fixed within a few hours or days, but don't hold your breath. If it isn't fixed promptly, better have a backup plan.

Our rules for dealing with cheap web hosts:
- Make sure you have separate control of your domain names and DNS servers - don't ever keep them at the same place as your web hosting service.
- Always keep your own up-to-date local copy of everything currently on your web site, and a full record of your ftp/email/database/subdomain configuration so that you could duplicate it easily.
- Pay for a second back-up web hosting service at another site that you can switch over to within a few hours (2x cheap is still cheap), and try to keep it mostly up to date so it won't take long to switch when you need it.
- Don't ever pay an advance amount for web hosting service that you aren't prepared to abandon at any time.

This works better for us than any of the more expensive web hosting services we've tried. Our experience is that expensive is not equal to reliable or responsive.

You will be charged their standard domain registration fee (which is US$9.95) ONLY IF you cancel your hosting plan in less than 12 months.

If you want to host more than 1 single domain, you better get a reseller account, which comes with WHM (WebHost Manager) ON TOP OF CPanel.

If you are paying for two hosts always anyway you'd be better to set up near real time site mirroring and DNS load balancing. That way you'd get the benefits of both hosts and if one goes down the other automatically picks up.

In order to download 5 TB of data in a month you would have to continuously leech 2 MB/s for 30 days - AKA 16 Mbps. Doubt your connection can even do half of that speed.

Hehehe, i leech at 2,200KB/sec, so yes I can do that.

The setup wasn't the most painless one. But once I got everything setup I love it. The control panel is easy to use from my Point-of-View. I got everything I need from this host too. Control over DNS, MySQL, PHP4 (option for 5 but my script doesn't work in it)

The amount of bandwidth I get is great too. My visitors are sucking up 8GB to 10GB a day and my last host was getting mad at me and shut me down a few times. (Damn IXWebhosting). Getting domains from these guys isn't too bad either. For $10 a year on a registered I-CANN registar is a pretty darn good price. Most host who offer domains aren't even registered with I-CANN. Like 1and1 who buy their domains from another registar.

Overall I'm pretty happy with this host. Their Wiki page offers a good amount of information too. The one touch software are all pretty useless, since if you even plan on using any of that you shouldn't be buying hosting rather you should just get free hosting instead. The servers are fairly fast and uptimes seem to be pretty good so far this month.

Customer support though, as usual, is always **** by these shared hosting plans. But their service is pretty good so far. I hope I can stay with these guys wtihout any major problems. My site depends on it lol

The truth is, A LOT (if not most) of ICANN-accredited registrars offer sub-US$10 pricing: e.g. GoDaddy.com, DomainSite.com, NetFirms.com, and even Tucows.com.

Sorry, but I don't see WHY websites using WordPress, Gallery or MediaWiki should be using "free" hostng, just because those are free scripts?

From DreamHost latest newsletter:

3. Promo Code Change!

Some people say DreamHost Promo codes have become a blight on the land, tainting even the most innocuous endorsement of our services with the specter of potential kick-backs and affiliate tracking!

Some DreamHost owners would say that's a teensy bit melodramatic.

However, we're still making a big promo code change, effective next Tuesday, December 11th! Starting then, NO DreamHost promo code can give a discount greater than $50! All new and existing codes will be capped at this amount off, so start spreading the word now!

You still get $97 (minus the discount given) for somebody using your promo code, but now that discount can't be more than $50.. meaning even if you max out the discount you give, you'll still earn $47 as well.

Dreamhost oversells like mad.

But for $10 a year, I guess you can't really go wrong! That's friggin' cheap as hell! I wonder if they're really anal or have some TOS that restricts customers from using it for file hosting, even if it's legitimate like an open-source application or what not.
