So I have been buying the 10 lbs bagged potatoes from the grocery store for quite some time now. When I cook them sometimes they end up being sweet and take forever to cook. They aren't sweet potatoes though.

Any suggestions out there? Any specific potatoes that I should stay away from and not buy? I know this sounds odd but the worst feeling is biting into dinner and thinking arghhhhhhhhhhhhh

Are you adding sugar instead of salt to the water when you boil them?

what kind of potato did you buy?
how are you cooking it?
what are you trying to make with it?

No I am not adding sugar. Yesterday I cooked them in the oven. I nuked them in the microwave for about 5 minutes and then added some spices and placed them in the oven.

I bought the yukon gold potatoes.

Thanks for the quick responses!

You aren't freezing potatoes, by any chance? Because frozen potato will turn sweet when cooked.

Curious why you nuke them in the microwave first?

you should be cutting them into smaller wedge shapes (roughly golf ball size). Apply seasoning + olive oil and bake at higher temp. No need to nuke in microwave.

if you making baked potatoes (cooking them whole until the inside is soft and fluffy) then you are using the wrong potato.

if you're boiling whole potatos, they are done when they are able to slide off a knife (with only the assistance of gravity) after stabbing them in middle of the potato.

watch where you store them. if it's too cold then the starch turns into sugar.

Most potato bags now have labels that tell you how to best cook that variety.
