Please make decision based on no overclocking
Corsair 2X512 MB DDR400 3200 @ 2.2.2.5 timings
or
Generic 2X1 GB DDR400 3200
or
Corsair 4X512 MB DDR400 3200 @ 3.3.3.5 - (this may run each at 333Mhz)

You probably won't notice a a difference in performance with better timings or clight faster frequency. 2x 1GB should work well since some boards are picky with 4 sticks of RAM.

2 x 1GB is simple, cheap, effective, and a good amount of RAM for your stated needs. Be sure to memtest it.

Quantity matters more than speed right now. 2x512 simply isn't enough. A 1 GB set of 2-2-2-5 was kickass back in the day though.
